Big works night out

I have a very big works night out coming up which is for a very rare special event. There is no dress code as such but the event is being held in a lovely location and a lot of the woman are talking about what dresses they are wearing (mainly evening gowns)

I no longer like dressing up at all, I just don't feel comfortable (not body imagine related) and I really don't want to wear a dress.

AIBU to attend wearing jeans and a smart top?

A lot of these woman I have never met we just work for the same company. I don't want to spend all night being looked down on for not making an effort but at the same time I just want to be there and feel comfortable.

The event is meaning I'm going to be away from home for the night too which is at the moment is quite a big thing for me but no one else is going to know that so I'm worried it's just going to look like I can't be arsed but there's a lot of background as to why.

Should I just go in what I feel comfortable in or avoid?

Would you feel comfortable in black trousers and a smart top- would be better than jeans to fit in and look presentable at an event

I mean I think you might stand out more in jeans.... Is there not a simple black dress you could wear? Or black trousers? Then you'd blend in more (if that makes you more comfortable)

I think wearing jeans to a smart work event where others are wearing cocktail dresses will reflect poorly on you. Smart trousers or an all in one maybe?

WouldUShouldI · 06/10/2022 06:00

They are black jeans if that counts. I do have black trousers too.

Even though you are absolutely entitled to wear what you want I would say no to the jeans - but another pair of trousers and a nice top (and heels?) could absolutely work. Even though you want to wear jeans I'm not sure you would end up feeling that comfortable as you would definitely stand out. Only choose not to go if you don't think you'll enjoy the evening, not because of your outfit. If you do go, I hope you have a great time!

Go with the black trousers if you don’t mind wearing them - will look smarter than jeans

@GingerPigz thank you

Not jeans but black trousers and a nice top will be fine I’m sure OP. Enjoy

Exactly this!

I think trousers, a nice top and even a blazer if you have one is perfect for this. It’s the right amount of smart without feeling under dressed. Hope you have a great night!

I hear you, OP - after a couple of years of embracing elasticated waistbands I’m not thrilled with the prospect of formal wear. But as PP say, jeans may make you stand out and unwittingly feel more uncomfortable.
I’ve taken to wearing jumpsuits which feel less formal than a gown but still ticks the ‘smart’ box.
have a lovely time.

Ah bless you, good for you for still cracking on and going even though it sounds like it's outside your comfort zone.
I agree with others, jeans might look disrespectful and are likely to draw comments from others or even your boss?
Black trousers and a nice top, maybe heels or a blazer if you can manage. Hope you manage to enjoy it a bit once you're there
