To think putting a spider in the kitchen bin is not a good way of disposing of a spider?!🕷

So just had a heart attack finding a largeish spider sitting on top of some rubbish in the kitchen bin 😱….

Partner was like ‘oh must be the one I put in there earlier…’

Like I’m sorry but WHAT????!

Apparently sometimes he puts spiders he finds in a box and then puts this in the bin… well this spider found it’s way out of the box and just sat there waiting to surprise me… I think I might now develop a phobia of the kitchen bin…😱

People on here are mental

Did you mean me ? don’t think i am mental, I just think everything has the right to a quiet life and exist, sadly it doesn’t happen

He should put them gently outside. Throwing them out of a window is really cruel

They are practically weightless, it's fine!

If we see a spider in our house we just say something akin to 'Oh look, a spider', possibly comment on how big it is and then we all go on with our days (spider included) 😂

House spiders don't belong outside :(

Same! In the bin ready to jump out is much worse than just quietly going about its business in a corner somewhere!

Cas112 · 05/10/2022 22:21

I couldn't forgive my partner if he did this haha. I can't deal with spiders ahah

Curiosity101 · 05/10/2022 22:30

I know someone else mentioned it, but putting a house spider outside is probably crueler than putting it in a bin. It's weird putting it in a bin... But still honestly no where near as bad as throwing it outside or killing it.

And theoretically throwing it out of a window is fine, they're basically weightless. Given their body structure they shouldn't have any issues from the fall... But they are being thrown outside... So that could very likely kill them.

Mojoj · 05/10/2022 22:39

Or here's a thought - just leave them be!! It's not Australia you live in!! They're completely harmless.

Tabitha888 · 05/10/2022 22:44

🤮

Ihavehadenoughalready · 05/10/2022 22:44

Sometimes I catch them and take them outside. Sometimes I use chemical weapons (Bug spray) to knock them down, then smash them as quickly as possible with the closest shoe because I don't want them to suffer too long, then flush them down the toilet.

I would never just put an alive spider in the trash. Poor spider.

The spider being in the bin waiting to jump out was much worse than it just being in a corner somewhere… DH made the situation worse, it just really freaked me out…

I would rather it be put outside though, I don’t like the idea of spiders in the house at all tbh 😬

Just for clarification, the big ones we call house spiders can live happily outside but probably had a nest inside if female, or hatched inside last year if male. There was a good little article from the British Arachnological Society in our local magazine recently.

However, I think the OPs DH is wrong to put a live spider in the bin.

Chloefairydust · 06/10/2022 00:25

I always wonder how they get into the house in the first place … And it’s always this time of year they seem to appear as well 🤔

Yes your DH is being unreasonable.

The rational response would be to burn the house down. Then LTB.

Yours are probably just from last year. He probably stored them in a cupboard or something.

Can they?

I've often wondered if putting them outside was cruel. I just don't want to share my home with big spiders because they are fast and I don't like surprises.

Splutteramo · 06/10/2022 10:14

Spiders are your friend! They keep the germ spreading insect population down. Plus they’re already everywhere, you just can’t see them… maybe just make your peace with the spiders?

This time of year they emerge and are looking for spider lurve. That’s why the horrible little fuckers are everywhere.

IloveGogglebox · 06/10/2022 13:12

I would be livid. My arachnophobia is really bad (getting hypnosis for it in a couple of weeks) so if he done that I would go apeshit lol

I normally spray them with raid then hoover them. I want to be able to put them outside hence the therapy I'm about to do

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 06/10/2022 13:15

House spiders don't die when you put them outside, they are only called house spiders because we find them in houses. Confirmed by the spider expert at London zoo. Just put them outside, they will be fine and probably come back in again

Chloefairydust · 06/10/2022 18:42

Yes I remember a particularly disturbing, huge, black house spider living happily in some ivy outside one of my friends house when I was a child. The thing was there for years and it was enormous and black and looked like it was positively thriving (shudders at the memory) . I swear it was so big I could see it’s eyes😱. So I don’t think they die from being put outside🤔

I would much rather them be put outside than in the kitchen bin.( I like the idea of putting them in neighbours garden, I might get my partner to do this from now on 🤣)

BTW anyone knows what happens when they are sucked up a hoover?

Can they find their way out again??

Partner likes to use the hoover as well, and I’m not convinced that’s an appropriate way of removing a spider either, I think they might crawl back out although I have never seen one so this…

What an idiot, why do that?

Very bizarre thing to do

FattyAirways · 06/10/2022 18:52

House spiders in the UK do you absolutely no harm. They might look big and scary but they're more scared of you. They're actually amazing beings who have real talents. Can you make a web so intricate and beautiful? Leave the fucking spiders alone.

Don't fucking use the vacuum cleaner on a spider. You do know they feel pain and fear don't you?
