To think two hours homework a night is not excessive for a year 10 pupil

DD 1 is adamant that two hours a night homework, is against her human rights. She has been stomping around, refusing to start her homework. DD 1 is being exceptionally rude to me swearing at me for sending her to a prison camp and claiming to be-having a nervous breakdown due to the schools expectations.

I am trying to calm her down and reason with her, that two hours a night is quite proportionate for a year 10 girl at a Grammar School. This especially as the school as stated her target grades are 7-9 in all ten GCSE subjects.

She has also informed me that her head of year as given her a after school detention, today for calling her English teacher a 'mean cow' for a poor homework mark. DD denies calling the teacher that, saying she was misheard when she pulled her face at the teacher.

DD is saying the detention is unfair and against her human rights because it is grossly an excessive punishment even if she had accidentally muttered 'mean cow' when the teacher spoke to her. DD argues that her face pulling was justified because someone has to stand up against the schools unrealistic and unreasonable levels of homework demanded.

90 minutes a night at GCSE and 3 hours a night at A level. Two hours seems excessive.

You've got to wonder what we are doing to our kids if we demand 3hrs a night at 16-18 years old after a full day at school. 8:30-4:00pm +3 hours a night that's over a 10 hour day. That's more than many adults do at work

What the actual fuck is this?

What puzzles you about my comment ?

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 03/10/2022 21:50

Of COURSE it's too much! 2 hours a WEEK is more reasonable. My DD had 3-4 hours a week of homework some 10 years ago, which was bad enough! And she did REALLY well at school/in her exams etc... No need for 2 hours a night homework FFS.

Piss take, No wonder so many kids fail at school. Pushing all this on them.

The school gives three homework tasks a night, English and Maths HW are 40 minute each and are given twice a week. The other subjects are timetabled one 45minute homework each week except, the science subjects which are assigned two 30minute homework tasks a week. a total of 9.5 hours of homework a week

That may be what is timetabled, but is it actually what is set? (I assume so, if your daughter is rebelling).
DC's school set 2 subjects a night, so one homework slot per GCSE subject in a week. Sometimes nothing got set and sometimes it was just to (say) finish off work in class, so didn't take too much time. Practical subjects such as Art and DT took longer though.

I think to actually have 2 hours a night every night at this point in Year 10 is too much. For comparison, DC taking A Levels is recommended to do 4 hours per A Level out of class - and as they have study periods during the day, that actually works out as less than 2 hours each night.

Stompythedinosaur · 03/10/2022 21:51

Two hours study a night is ludicrous! Far too much imo. When is she meant to have hobbies? It is just hothousing for academic success at the expense of the rest of her character.

Exactly. It's fucking disgusting. Homework should be banned altogether IMO. They are at school 7-8 hours a day, 5 days a week. PLENTY of time for them to learn all they need to know. If they're not learning it, and need 2 hours EXTRA at home, someone needs to look into the teaching standards.

I Understand your perspectives, but no wonder other countries would be better at various subject's and developments ect if that's our perspectives

PugInTheHouse · 03/10/2022 21:55

Dahliasrule - many schools do not believe that excessive homework is useful at all, consolidating something they may have done at school perhaps but many schools ask for it to be handed back in the following week or in a few days, not 2 hrs every night. That means roughly 6.5 hrs at school then 2 more hrs studying at home, way too much. The schools need to up their game if they can't teach enough during the day.

GCSEs aren't that difficult and 8s or 9s are not the most important thing, in the work place we would often favour someone who is an interesting, rounded individual who has 6s and 7s rather than someone with a limited CV but all 9s.

Arnaquer · 03/10/2022 21:55

Would you like to work all day then come home and do another 2 hours?
I know I wouldn't. Give the child a break.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/10/2022 21:57

Six Lessons a day, probably three lots of homework at 20-30 minutes each.

Then there's the other homework she hasn't done from previous days/didn't do it properly - AND making up time for the things she didn't do because she was being a dick to the staff all day...

Life's tough when you're 14 and you think the entire world is out to get you.

PugInTheHouse · 03/10/2022 21:57

Hawkins - your whole comment is bizarre, WTF has Only Fans got to do with anything. There's a big difference between ridiculous amounts of homework a night and failing at school and having no career, somewhere in the middle is pretty normal.

Mariposista · 03/10/2022 22:01

I think it’s too long but sadly not unusual. 90 minutes would be better (2 45 minute tasks). Teenagers spend a long day in school and need to do other activities, sport, music whatever (not tv and being on phones) and get to bed at a decent time!

two hours homework is way over the top

reluctantbrit · 03/10/2022 22:03

DD is at a state secondary and the school expects 2-3 hours per day homework and revision. This is an average, some days she is finished after 1 hour, some days she adds revision and does 3.

She still does hobbies 4x a week.

Her school has termly exams, proper mocks in May of Y10 plus 2x mocks in Y11. There is no way she could just do everything a week before a mock, they have to do a bit all the time.

The point I was suggesting is that if we take a steady more easy going perspectives to education and learning, then other countries will be better overall in various industries due to having more smarter and more intelligent workforce s.

Looneytune253 · 03/10/2022 22:05

Gosh she's got a shock coming when she goes to college if she does a levels. My dd gets that much for each of her 3 subjects most days.

Sh05 · 03/10/2022 22:06

Is it due in the very next day? 2 hours is a guide I'm sure, some people will take longer to complete it and others will get it done faster.
Ds in year 10 is already doing his first set of assessments this week and also revising for mocks in November for 3 early entry GCSEs.
His homework is rarely due in the very next day so he's able to space it out some days.

Wombatbum · 03/10/2022 22:09

That seems an awful lot. My son is year 10, daughter year 11. Neither do that much and are predicted high grades.

OvaryActions · 03/10/2022 22:09

WhereYouLeftIt · 03/10/2022 20:54

2 hours a night, every night, is excessive.

But she does seem to have a bit of an obsession about 'her human rights'.Grin

TBF I was very hot on my "human rights" at that age too.. I remember all my friends were as well 🤣

I agree with you though, 2 hours every night is excessive.

Hmm Doing more hours of homework does not make you more intelligent. Two hours of homework every night are not necessary in order to get good grades. There are unprecedented levels of stress, anxiety and mental health problems among secondary school students. 90 minutes of homework a night are more than enough.

Butterflytown · 03/10/2022 22:11

I went to a grammar school in the 90s. Homework was 2 hours ish each night by year 10, bit more at weekends. 4 double lessons a day and each one gave homework. The school was an exam factory really and I was very diligent and academic so I would have done all the homework set. Looking back it was too much- I didn’t get home from school til 16.45 and was up early as I had quite a distance to travel. I had no time for extra curricular activities although it wasn’t such a thing then I don’t think and I also wasn’t sporty/ musical anyway (wish I was)!

Leftbutcameback · 03/10/2022 22:16

Sierra259 · 03/10/2022 21:26

9.5 hours a week - surely a couple of hours of that can be done at weekends so it's not 2 hours every school night?
Maybe it's a bit of a shock after a couple of years of interrupted learning/home schooling where they weren't building it up gradually every year?

That's what I was going to say - my art homework for gcse always took ages (I wasn't very good!) but I did it on Sunday for a few hours. 10 hours is an hour and a bit a night and then Saturday or Sunday afternoon which is manageable.

Leftbutcameback · 03/10/2022 22:18

But I do admire OPs daughter for starting a rebellion at school! Ours was over school skirts (no trousers allowed) and it's a bit of a rite of passage
