To think when people say 'Should of' instead of 'Should HAVE' - it makes them look incredibly thick

Honestly I do not understand how people can continue making this mistake

I know people who are very clever and have professional jobs, that continue to do this

It makes me fkin scream inside

Yes, it's grammatically incorrect but I couldn't get THIS worked up over it.

You're coming across as a bit of a snob, tbh.

Quitelikeit · 03/10/2022 11:10

To you it might but it truly doesn’t bother me!!

things like local crime, living costs etc funnily enough they bother me!!

Mumofsend · 03/10/2022 11:10

I couldn't care less and I certainly don't think it makes anyone look thick. You can be incredibly well spoken yet ooze the intelligence of a slug, ie our government.

BoredATworktoday · 03/10/2022 11:10

Actually, yes

I am not the grammar police by far, but this one really does not make sense when it is said out loud 'should of'

I mean other grammar mistakes such as (two, too, to) or (their, they're, there), I can understand as they sound the same when said out loud, but SHOULD OF, is just daft as it makes no sense when said

In fact SHOULD OF, is even worse when said out loud

35965a · 03/10/2022 11:11

Says the OP who obviously doesn’t know what a full stop is.

Mostmarriedcouple · 03/10/2022 11:12

You seem quite bit weird, why would you take time out of your day to post this. Find a hobby you odd bod!

ItWasntMyFault · 03/10/2022 11:12

It may highlight that grammar is not one of their strong points but it doesn't mean they are thick. There are many forms of intelligence.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 03/10/2022 11:12

I think people who start threads that have been done to death without using the search function makes them look incredibly thick.

Vajizzle · 03/10/2022 11:12

@Mostmarriedcouple You took the time out of the day to respond to it.....erm Ironic

How can you tell they are saying should of instead of should've? They sound very similar when said aloud.

RomeoOscarXrayIndigoEcho · 03/10/2022 11:13

I don't like it but it doesn't make them thick!

As I was explaining to my DD it has happened (I think) because should've can sound like "should of" when spoken sometimes.

In fact those two phrases are homophones in my accent.

The same with all variants; could've, would've etc.

If we said "should have" instead of should've then there may be fewer mistakes.

Vajizzle · 03/10/2022 11:13

@coffeeandpoetry Gee thanks :)

HappyHamsters · 03/10/2022 11:14

Should it be "who continue to do this" without a comma and you have no full stops.

Facepalmtree · 03/10/2022 11:14

When spoken it sounds fairly similar to "should've" @BoredATworktoday

Written down I cringe a bit but spoken is fine to me.

Caiti19 · 03/10/2022 11:14

Grammatical prowess is not an indication of I.Q. It's a reflection of a person's exposure to the rules of good grammar.

Yeah because we all know you can only care about grammar OR crime 🙄

This. I correct the kids if they ever say it, and I’m careful myself but I think it’s so widespread I don’t think it’s accurate to make assumptions about people because of it. Also, it’s actually not that easy to hear the difference for me - “should’ve” is perfectly correct, and in a lot of accents “should’ve” sounds pretty much the same as “should of”. I’m a bit more mentally judgy about it being written down but only if teamed with a lot of other errors - and then I judge their grammar, not themselves as people or their level of education. I work with loads of people from overseas and frankly I’m always hugely impressed at them doing their entire jobs in another language.

  1. Don't be a coward with your name changes. If you want to come on here acting like such a snob, own it.
  1. 'Should of' sounds like 'should've', which is accurate and where the mistake comes from. I'm shocked an intelligent person like you doesn't know this.
  1. If your own grammar and sentence structure is this bad, I definitely wouldn't be going on a public forum complaining about others.
Vajizzle · 03/10/2022 11:15

@HappyHamsters When asking questions, should you not use a question mark?

You can’t get worked up over grammar when someone’s speaking - how do you know they’re not saying should’ve…

Glitteratitar · 03/10/2022 11:16

This is one of my biggest pet hates! I’m with you OP.

Ironic should not be capitalised.

Glass houses OP.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 03/10/2022 11:16

Nobody says "should have" though. People say "should've". "Should've" sound close to "should of" than "should have".

Vajizzle · 03/10/2022 11:16

I'm PMSL at how triggered people are

OP posts:
GroggyLegs · 03/10/2022 11:16

But when it's spoken, don't most people say 'should've' which sounds to my ear like 'should of'.
