Beckham - blood money

lightisnotwhite · 02/10/2022 19:57

Beckham has earned at least £70million ( although sources say nearer £145 million) to be ambassador for the World Cup Qatar
At least 6.5 thousand workers have already died bringing football to Qatar. The working conditions are appalling. Something that a few million towards decent temporary housing, water and food would solve.
They also criminalise homosexuality whilst Beckham has been a gay rights advocate.

Just how can he accept such huge fees on the back of such a regime? Or at least not use the fee to highlight how to make football a game without shame.

Why aren’t you mad at FIFA considering they’re bringing the entire World Cup there?

NightNite · 02/10/2022 20:13

but he queued for the queen!

InCheesusWeTrust · 02/10/2022 20:19

Wasn't that number actually debunked?

Winter olympics were held by a country with active ethnic cleansing and... No snow where Olympics were...

Sport is not about ethics but money now. That's it

lightisnotwhite · 02/10/2022 20:20

I am. But Beckham is a massive hypocrite.
One he has enough money to not be ambassador and secondly if he takes the fee enough money to ensure that workers don’t die unnecessarily.
Why wouldn’t you?
Interestingly other Europeans that use “local” crew make the effort to house their workers provide basic facilities etc. The Qataris don’t and nor does Beckham.

^ 👏🏻And he’s a man and it’s all about money. See corruption- follow the money.

LadyHarmby · 02/10/2022 20:22

It’s depressing that Russia and Qatar got the World Cups in the first place. Corruption much?

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 02/10/2022 20:22

@lightisnotwhite

And where is the link to the proof 6,500 have been killed bringing the footie to Qatar?

sst1234 · 02/10/2022 20:25

Are you also outraged about Bangladesh, India and Nepal and anyone who supports or advocates for events there. That’s where the migrant workers come from and their life and prospects are so dire there that they are grateful to get to Qatar to support their families.

Oh well that’s ok then.

The number was debunked because it was higher.

The point is why are major celebrities supporting this, It’s horrific. It’s a simple thing for already mega rich celebrities to say no.

He's got a grown married man child to keep in the high life whilst doing nothing so that must be his excuse.

Can I have a link to that higher numbers?
I am not saying they are siant, but even Guardian (whose numbers you are quating there) linked only 37 deaths to the stadium build with the overall number being genral worker's deaths since QTar was awarded the competition. .

Just interested if they tied the thousands to it

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 02/10/2022 20:29

£70m?!

Wowee, I had no idea he was getting that level of wedge.

Well it’s reported as government sources in the Guardian and Sunday Times. I mean you can deny that many died if you want but if you’ve been to the country…

Not providing any proof to any of your rambling @lightisnotwhite ??? I can only surmise then that it's all bluster and bullshit.

VladmirsPoutine · 02/10/2022 20:31

Yanbu but many people wouldn't even require a fraction of £70million to sell any semblance of morality down the river.

Not arsed to provide the proof for all your ranting???

Nothing to see here............................. 😎

Pufferpuffin · 02/10/2022 20:32

I read something quite detailed on how that number isn’t correct. They had taken the whole number of Asian workers (white collar as well as labour etc) that died in Qatar over the past decade. These are from all sorts of deaths eg cancer, heart attack, road traffic accident. I’ll try and find the link. Obviously there will have been people who died in construction accidents and that is horrific too but it is not correct that 6,500 labourers have died on World Cup construction projects specifically. Construction is also the deadliest indirectly in the UK for accidents I see from a quick google with around 30 deaths in the last year.

Because even Guardian didn't claim they all died building the stadium.

This type of sensationalism and misuse of numbers ctually takes away from the actual issue of general worker's safety there. Which bas issues

Theluggage15 · 02/10/2022 20:34

Millions of migrant workers built the 8 stadiums, hotels other massive infrastructure for the World Cup. I imagine 6500 deaths was a fairly conservative estimate but it would be extremely difficult getting the truth from Qatar. They’re a vile regime and Beckham is appalling selling himself to help their sportswashing.

Why do people keep saying stadium singular. Do you think the WC is played in one stadium, all the countries taking turns?!

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 02/10/2022 20:36

Yanbu but why single out Beckham? Most pension funds are heavily invested in fossil fuels so directly funding Quatar, Saudi Araba and many other human rights vacuums.

We are all complicit as long as we keep nodding along with the political dominance of the oil industry (why do you think Liz Truss is so keen on fracking - it won't make a dent in UK self reliance but keeps the narrative that the "green crap" is just a fringe issue).

MargotMoon · 02/10/2022 20:36

Regardless of how many people died (surely even 1 unnecessary death is too many?) plus homosexuality is illegal there and that alone should be enough for Beckham not to touch that money with a barge pole.

lightisnotwhite · 02/10/2022 20:37

I get poor migrant workers end up in shit jobs. But it’s the sheer amount of money Beckham is getting without mentioning them. He has enough money to change many lives of the immigrants involved,

Without saying he disagrees with the the government stance on homosexuality whilst being an advocate for gay rights.
