to think my new colleagues are weird

Hi, I've started a new job in the past few weeks and work with three other people.

Two of these people make no conversation whatsoever. It's sooo weird and has started to drive me a bit doo-dally!

I know some people don't do small talk - that's fine BUT to not say one word??!!

I'm laughing about it now but its left me bewildered all week. I just don't get it - so odd.

Thank God its Friday!!!

Could it be that they are shy and not sure of "new" people?

thefunkypea · 25/01/2008 15:20

What's the third person like?

TheMuppetMuggle · 25/01/2008 15:22

Could you just strike up a convo with them?

southeastastra · 25/01/2008 15:22

that would drive me barmy, but saying that, my sister worked for a company where talking wasn't allowed! very odd

Meggle - love your idea - will be starting that on Monday!

Funkypea - the third person is very much up for a chat. (She's worked there a few years)

I don't think they're shy or being nasty. Just very bizarre! (Have to see the funny side of me receiving one word responses to my attempts at conversation!)

To be honest, can't work it out - not sure I will. Spent all last week thinking 'oh my god, thay hate me'!

oooh there could be all sorts of office politics going on that might explain their one word answers that you don't know about yet!

Yeah OMDB and Chequers, I suppose I do feel there's something more sinister to it. I've never met people before who say absolutely nothing. Mmm plot thickens - maybe they do hate me!

Just able to see the light side of it cos its Friday.

Sometimes one word answers are better... I came in on Wednesday and said to my new manager 'oh, isn't it sad about Heath Ledger' - he didn't know about it, I said that it had been on the news last night, he replied 'The only news I took any notice of last night was the plunging stock market and the sub-prime banking crisis' (we work for a bank).

Now am I really shallow or is he just a tit?

thebecster · 25/01/2008 16:05

I can imagine my last assistant posting this about me . But just to warn you I suspect that her endless nattering was part of the reason I fired her. I mean I was able to give lots of examples of how she'd made mistakes etc., and she was still on her notice period so I didn't need to give her warning or anything. Thank god, because if she'd stayed one more HOUR I would have eviscerated her. If she had shut the f* up I probably wouldn't have been so quick off the draw with the P45, despite the mistakes. I gave her one word answers and cold stares when she spoke because I was so busy and she just droned on and on and on... But I do chat with my current assistant - probably in a 12 hour day we'll have a couple of 5 minute non-work-related chats. That's it though, rest of the time we're working too hard.

I know what you mean Becster, endless chat can drive you up the wall too.

My situation is more like:

Me 'Morning. Did you have an ok weekend?'

Colleague 'yeah. Yeah I did'

Me 'Get up to much?'

Colleague 'no, not really'

END OF CONVERSATION!! (They're all like this. Well they were before I gave up!)

I work with a girl who's the complete opposite.

She's so loud and chavvy it does my nut in.

I wouldn't mind if she had something of interest to talk about, but she chats shit. All the time.

She phones her mates and then I have the privilege of hearing them all chat shit on loudspeaker.

Oh, for a couple quiet working hours...
