Only people causing trouble on European holidays are Brits!

I'll preface this by saying that not all British holidaymakers are causing trouble, far from it. However, my experience is that it is always British people who do cause trouble when abroad by getting too drunk and becoming aggressive etc.

We're currently on a European holiday in a nice 4* apartment complex. We've had a lovely time so far, even managed to get DH off his phone for a change after a serious chat.

HOWEVER, three nights ago a British family arrived and they're staying at the opposite end of the corridor, parents and two pre-teen boys. First the whole family was making an absolute racket every time they got back to their apartment past 8pm, and they were especially loud at 11pm when they seemed to call it a night. They were so loud that I popped my head out and asked them to be quiet. The following night the boys decided to start knocking on our apartment door loudly at 11pm, waking up our baby in the process. I went over to knock on their door to speak to the parents, expecting them to apologise. Far from it! Dad (who was massive) opens the door, swears and shouts in my face and slams the door shut. I obviously contacted reception immediately and I believe they dealt with it because so far tonight it's been quieter. I did see the boys running around the bar and the dad drinking at 3pm this afternoon. The receptionist actually told me that the parents had both been really drunk last night.

Everyone else has been lovely, there are mainly families and older couples here and lots of different nationalities. No trouble with anyone else, so why is it just British people?

Now I'm actually scared of going into the corridor with my children in case I see them. 😧

Me and my family went to 1 of the canary islands in August. Our holiday was spoilt by people from the same country but not the UK.

You'll get people who don't know how to behave from all countries and people who behave well from those same countries.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 01/10/2022 21:45

Mixed I think. I think some British people drink way too much but I've had "interesting" experiences in hotels with drunks from all over the place. The Mexican woman who claimed her room was "too hot" and that dh and I should help her cool off (she caused a scene over breakfast because we'd turned her down), lots of very drunken Russians and some horrendous young Americans. We now avoid all inclusives because bad experiences with drunken behaviour and only a small percentage of that was British but obviously that may have been location.

FayeGovan · 01/10/2022 21:48

See when you're all saying British......do you mean English??

@shedwithivy I've got other examples from other holidays I'm afraid, but this actually happened yesterday so it's very fresh.

Previously an English couple were openly mocking DH when he was having health problems at the time. When I politely asked them to stop and apologise they became extremely rude. This was a middle aged couple.

I've got lots of other experience unfortunately, but it's always British people who have had too much to drunk!

If somebody was doing that in Dutch, would you understand that’s what they were doing though? You wouldn’t have had a clue.

You’ve clearly never been on holiday with Russians if you think Brits are badly behaved drunkards. I’ve also seen some really loutish behaviour from Swedes (walking up to a parked car and pissing on it, in the middle of the day).

If you are going to a resort favoured by British people you’ll see badly behaved Brits. If you go to a resort favoured by Germans you’ll see badly behaved Germans. Tour companies promote different resorts to different client groups.

The only bad experiences I have endured abroad on holiday have been with British people. One family thought it was clever to feed the local wildlife fruit loops. Another family used to send their 3/4 year badly sunburnt child to collect drinks from the bar. And one dad was so drunk on the plane he was shouting and being abusive to fellow passengers in front of his two young boys.

Imissmoominmama · 01/10/2022 21:55

The worst experience I’ve had was on a skiing holiday. A group of young people from Blackburn totally ruined it for us. I’ve never felt so tempted to do someone harm.

Discovereads · 01/10/2022 21:57

How do you know they were British? A bit of racial profiling?

TeenyQueen · 01/10/2022 22:03

@Discovereads I know they were Brits because I have functioning ears and I could listen to their accents whilst the boys were shouting in the corridor and the dad told me that he 'didn't give a f*ck' that his child had decided to disturb us at 11pm and wake our baby up in the process.

You clearly have never been on holiday with Russians!!!

If you are holidaying where most of the tourists are British, they will be the troublemakers.

I have seen numerous Nationalities behaving badly over the years ,Americans,Germans,Scandinavians,Spanish,Russians as already mentioned.

The Brits are from the only ones who behave badly on holiday,

You need to travel more.

Iwanttoholdyourham · 01/10/2022 22:06

If you're from the UK, going on holiday... chances are you're likely to run into lots of other people from the UK because they also have similar considerations about where they can fly from/to, how strong the pound is versus each foreign currency, etc. So I think that might result in a disproportionate number of Brits wherever you are, and that might be skewing your samples.

On the rare occasion that I go abroad, I try to avoid touristy places, so I don't know which countries have the worst tourists. It wouldn't surprise me if it is us, though - language learning is abysmal in the UK, and if you don't try to learn a country's language, it follows that you don't learn their culture, and you're not the best guest.

Brits shouting loudly and slowly in English are just the most entitled people ever...

jazzybelle · 01/10/2022 22:08

The type of people you encounter on holiday depends on where you go. In Puerto Pollensa in Mallorca, the bars close at midnight. We've been there twice and never seen anyone drunk and/or shouting late in the evening. Nerja and Santa Eulalia are the same.

jazzybelle · 01/10/2022 22:12

PS as for the question of Brits causing trouble on holiday, I've read that some Germans can be much the same as can people from other countries. We go on holiday abroad every tear and never encounter drunken behaviour or any loutish behaviour. Choose your resort and accommodation more carefully.

jazzybelle · 01/10/2022 22:13

Year not tear!

Keyansier · 01/10/2022 22:15

What country are you from OP? People are pretty well travelled on here - I'm sure somebody has stories to share of troublesome tourist behaviour from those round your neck of the woods.

Discovereads · 01/10/2022 22:16

TeenyQueen · 01/10/2022 22:03

@Discovereads I know they were Brits because I have functioning ears and I could listen to their accents whilst the boys were shouting in the corridor and the dad told me that he 'didn't give a f*ck' that his child had decided to disturb us at 11pm and wake our baby up in the process.

Oh, the old racial profiling by accents. You know that’s not infallible?

sqirrelfriends · 01/10/2022 22:16

I used to think the same until I came across an awful Dutch family in Tenerife. Imagine the most foul mouthed, rude and drunkest brits you can but Dutch.

I knew it was possible of course, I just didn’t expect it or think anyone could compete with us.

TeenyQueen · 01/10/2022 22:17

The country we're in is supposedly more of a 'middle class' destination according to Mumsnet, so not the most popular destination for British package holidays. We thought that for the price we paid poorly behaved drunk Brits would be priced out.

Everyone else has been fab, lots of lovely Scottish people here.

OP posts:
AnneElliott · 01/10/2022 22:17

I disagree op - it's not always Brits. While staying in Tunisia the report was occupied by mainly Germans - I've never met such awful people in my life. Does that mean all Germans behave badly in holiday?

Forfukzsake · 01/10/2022 22:17

I cannot recall being on a holiday where any tourists were causing trouble.

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 01/10/2022 22:20

Not sure why you felt you had to mention that the dad was massive, or the fact that shock horror, he was drinking alcohol at 3pm.

Pilipalapal · 01/10/2022 22:23

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that almost every survey of the worst tourists by nationality has British people in the top 3.

basilmint · 01/10/2022 22:23

In my experience, the vast majority o British holidaymakers are well-behaved but there are more badly behaved British holidaymakers than other nationalities.

Slightly different but in recent years we have mostly holidayed on campsites in France with a mix of nationalities. Haven't encountered any anti-social behaviour from anyone (although the Brits do tend to be the last to bed). Yet on every single UK camping holiday I've been on, there has always been at least one loud group of campers playing music, talking loudly and keeping everyone away at night and they are invariably on the pitch next to mine.

TinyLittleBug · 01/10/2022 22:24

It is generally the Brits who have too much to drink and behave in an obnoxious manner, in my experience.

Justanotherlurker · 01/10/2022 22:25

I think this is a case of wanting other Brits to be the worse and you focusing on it, but if you want to be educated you could read around the issue (google translate is a thing) and you will see that Germans/Dutch/Russian/Swedes/Finish/Italian/French all come top in causing trouble.

You haven't had some elnightenigh thought process, you have just shown your ignorance.

Bairnsmum05 · 01/10/2022 22:26

British? Do you mean English?
