Dog poo in eye- help!

Honestly, I’ve never had anything like this happen before and I’m completely clueless. I actually made a new account because I didn’t want this to be linked to my existing account because it’s so embarrassing (I’m a regular poster and can contact MNHQ from my regular account to prove I’m not a troll!)

So, I have a gigantic, fluffy dog who still thinks she’s a puppy 😄 she has a big bushy fluffy tail which unfortunately gets poo and mud on it sometimes so has to be cleaned regularly (especially after she rolls in fox poo!) Earlier this week she had an upset tummy and managed to drag her tail though her poo while out on a walk and had to get it cleaned off when we went home

It was like something from some sort of awful cartoon. Everything just went wrong in a series of horrific events one after another. I tried to wash down her tail with baby shampoo and she decided it was a great time to have the zoomies, and decided to spin round really quickly to try and jump up on me! Unfortunately whilst she did that, her big bushy tail swished round and hit me straight on the face. My face was covered in water, baby-shampoo suds and unfortunately some of the dog poo which I was cleaning off her tail. I nearly threw up on the spot. I scrubbed my face completely clean using the strongest stuff I could find under the sink- I’ve probably burnt my skin off but at least it’s scrubbed clean. But obviously for my eye I can’t do that. I’m certain there was soapy dog poo in one of my eyes (the other was fine), and obviously I flushed my eye clean and after cleaning my face I jumped into the shower to clean myself again. I didn’t intentially get soap in my eyes obviously but in the process of showering and washing my face (again!) I’ll probably have got some soap in my eyes and cleaned it out. I haven’t had any infections, stickiness or eye problems since.

Should I be worried? I’m obviously aware about the dangers of dog poo and blindness but given my eye was washed straight away, am I just panicking about nothing? I didn’t know what to do- if I needed to get antibiotics just in case or if I should just monitor it and see if I get any infections?

my dog is in good health and is up to date in her vaccines and flea treatments, but of course this is the one time she’s very slightly behind in her working regime- due to a combination of waiting for them to actually arrive, and unfortunately as she had an upset tummy on/off she couldn’t get it until she was over that, and then this week she’s on medication from the vets so we were going to let her tummy settle a bit before giving the wormer treatment. She’s around 1 week behind on it.

the upset tummy she’s had recently was due to a change in food which didn’t agree with her and since going back on her other food she’s been fine. It’s not due to worms and she’s always been up to date but of course this is the one week we had to delay the working treatment slightly

Am I worrying about nothing here? Or should I get something specific to clean out my eye again? It was earlier this week and it’s been worrying me ever since. Any advice would be really appreciated

Do you worm her regularly? If so there shouldn’t be any risk of blindness.

You will be ok but you could get some optrex and an eye bath if you want

Yeah I just explained all that in my post- she’s always been up to date apart from right now as we had to delay her working by a week ish because she had an upset tummy from a change in food.

I’m no medical expert, but it sounds like you rinsed it out pretty sharpish and it was mixed with soap, so I would imagine you would be fine in all likelihood. In your shoes I’d probably still have niggling anxiety tho (hello health anxiety!). Can you nip into a local chemist and speak to a pharmacist? They’re usually a good first port of call for things which don’t require immediate medical treatment, and they would hopefully be able to give you some advice/reassurance and let you know if you did need to speak to a gp for example.

I think in all likelihood you will be absolutely fine tho

I think if your eye were to get infected it would have by now, but get some eye drops and keep them if it happens again.

That’s great thank you! I’ll pick up some optrex today
