Why is it worse in the U.K.

Thatsaturdayfeeling · 01/10/2022 09:46

I’m British but not in the U.K. at the moment. Where I am, we also have food price increases and petrol was v high for a while, but it’s all not to the extent as the U.K…why is the U.K. in such dire straits compared to other places?

OP posts:

It isn't worse in the UK.

The number of people in the Netherlands turning to food banks for help rose 7.2% in 2020, way before the current inflation rate of over 17%.

goldfinchonthelawn · 01/10/2022 18:00

It's not necessarily worse here. It's getting bad everywhere. But we do pay a prem, ium for basic things like housing, and we are a chilly country that needs heating so when that skyrockets, we notice it. We've also had a shitty, self-serving givernment for over a decade with no sense of its social duty, so things like public transport are grossly underfunded and overpriced. I've never travelled anywhere abroad that is as expensive as UK train travel.

We are used to incredibly cheap food and it's starting to climb. But I was in Europe recently and noticed a small punnet of raspberries was 5 Euros in any market stall. Same in our local market is still £1.

When do we admit that capitalism has failed and return to bartering?

It did coincide with the mini budget but then having googled the euro did bottom out on 27th Sept which is around same time as pound. What happened for them I wonder to be the same day

What happened was that the Fed took actions which meant that the dollar strengthened against everyone else in the world, including the pound and the euro. That coincided more or less with the mini-budget undermining faith in the UK economy which meant the pound sank on world markets. The combination of the two meant that the pound lost some value against all other currencies, but loads against the dollar. Since oil is priced in dollars that's a problem for UK inflation.

Thanks for the precis...for reasons various we were watching the euro/dollar but more especially euro/£ rates as this started unravelling and yes, as you say, the euro took a clobbering on the dollar but the £ fared much worse.

For a few hours or a day or so the narrative of we are all in together didn't apply.....the reason why? Answer on a postcard......

A massive lack of education and critical thinking skills is at the heart of the UKs problems.

They think this way because deep down they are a very classist society. Have been for centuries.

We have essentially tolerated industrial levels of ignorance amd absurdity for so many years due to under-funding In education.

The result is posts like yours.

An absolute inability to be objective about just how bad the situation is in the UK. Instead, more delusional comparisons and rantings about X and Y.

OP, this has been a long time coming.

The next 12 months will be existential for the UK. You will see austerity v2.0, a partial implosion of the housing market, and higher prices for food, energy, and petrol.

The brown nosers here (the "boosters") have no idea what is coming. They have no real world experience with finance, economics, and libertiarian ideologies.

The people with experience in industry have been signalling the red flashing danger signs for months now.

Should never have left the E U lots of brands of medication now impossible to get thanks to incompetent tory government....cuts cuts cuts across everything....price rises....nhs on its knees cant see a dentist unless you go private. Decent leaders needed asap.

BMW6 · 01/10/2022 19:13

I think a lot of the derision is Political. If things are as bad everywhere else (or worse), people won't vote for change of Government/rejoin the EU.

God forbid we actually acknowledge something positive about the UK. The Mob on here would scream Heresy 🙄

There is nothing positive.

Stop with the delusional thinking.

You remind me of Trump supporters.

Worthyornot · 01/10/2022 19:23

I think food is so much cheaper here than other countries. There are deals and offers every which way you turn on food.

Of course there are positives

People move here all the time for them.

Agree with pp it helps if you’ve lived in a few countries

Our prices are high but not the worst. My friend lives in Australia. The prices she pays for some items are shocking

Switzerland too. Truly eye-watering.

Yes, I have!

Have you?

Where are we today exactly compared to where we were 10 days ago for example.

Were you aware that to curb inflation,
interest rates should have gone up substantially even without this statement?

I don’t think the ‘mini-fudged’ was a good idea. I am against it. But tbh infs are going downhill left right and centre in <whispers loudly> pretty much every Western economy.

Many of the Eastern ones too

Global in fact.

It’s not just the Uk FGS.

Quincythequince · 01/10/2022 19:30

And just to be clear, I don’t think it’s great here. I absolutely don’t.

But comparatively speaking, there are many many worse places to be.

More delusional thinking.

I have lived in ten countries, as my parents where Diplomats.

Moving from Bangladesh to UK is pretty much always an improvement. But that tells you nothing about the state of the UK.

I have lived in Norway, Canada, US, Spain, and UK

And the UK is in an incredibly poor state. The standard of living since I was here last (1990s) has gotten measurably worse.

Healthcare, Housing, Transport, Services, Schools...all much worse.

Its high time the locals stopped lying to themelves about the situation. It is getting tiresome.

Nobody cares that people from Bangladesh or Pakistan or Philippines see the UK as a good destination. That tells you nothing about the current state of the UK relative to other developed countries.

The other developed countries want nothing to do with us because the quality of life in the UK has deteriorated too much, so nobody wants to move here anymore. Even London is problematic (for high earners even).

I just can’t take you seriously as I’ll always remember your hyperbole during Covid

It was so wrong - but it was funny. Probably the only time on here there was at least a laugh. I’m surprised you came back though

btw I’m not a ‘local’ as you put it.

Mumsnet was one of the original places for left wing monotone viewpoints that are now widespread across the whole internet, Mumsnet cancel culture and group think dates back to at least 2009! original ....

This means don't dare question the consensus that the European Union is the land of milk and honey, whereas the Uk is a economic and cultural basket case.

QueueEtwo · 01/10/2022 15:47

I'd be interested to know how many people in other European Countries are reliant on food banks!

Quite a lot here.
They tend to be church run and are often broken into as obvs the thieves know where the parish lock up is.
Our supermarkets also have big trollies just inside where you're invited to donate as you do your shopping.

I have lived in the US, UK (current), Canada (citizen) and Ireland (also citizen) and your post isn’t remotely reflective of how things are, right now.

Stop talking rubbish.
