Why is it worse in the U.K.

Thatsaturdayfeeling · 01/10/2022 09:46

I’m British but not in the U.K. at the moment. Where I am, we also have food price increases and petrol was v high for a while, but it’s all not to the extent as the U.K…why is the U.K. in such dire straits compared to other places?

Very bad in North Africa re power cuts recently wasn’t it?

Ah ok than I’m sure the UK is in a better position than Africa…..I’m unsure that British people will feel that means they are in a great position of superiority that they are not the worst though?

CranfordScones · 01/10/2022 16:38

Because you're substituting facts for impressions.

Did you see the inflation figure in the Netherlands this week? It was 17.1%

Or the huge protests in Prague a couple of weeks ago?

But everything's worse in the UK. By fiat of the Great Uninformed.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/10/2022 16:42

The IMF wasn’t commenting on day to day living in the Uk was it.

It was commenting on the shit show of a mini budget the government mustered up and how it was at odds with fiscal policy and the impact it might have.

At least try to understand what you post about, before posting.“

I was commenting on the shit show this government has deliberately created.

I wasn’t talking of day to day living, comparing apples with oranges. Of course there are countries where day to day living is far worse. We all know that. The point is, we have always been one of the countries where citizens of those nations aspire to living. This Government is very deliberately setting about trashing the economy in the name of ideology. There is no “might” about it. Senior dissenting voices at the Treasury were fired on day one of her administration, an administration that is taking advice from only two economists who support their policies, when many hundreds have warned of the disaster they are creating.

Husband heads a pension fund, many decades of financial expertise. Very many saw themselves on the brink of being wiped out prior to the BoE’s intervention. Prior to having family, my background was in the OAD of an international investment bank, prior to working for a member of the then Shadow Cabinet, so I do have some inkling. No need to patronise.

No we’ve established from this thread that things are worse in Africa.

SarahSissions · 01/10/2022 16:47

They’re not. Inflation is rife everywhere, Germanys is higher than ours. Credit suisse is in trouble. The euro tanked against the dollar. Everywhere energy prices are bonkers. But if the media report that then it gives them less of a stick to beat Truss with, so they are reporting it as if the current situation has been caused by the mini-budget rather than it being a global issue

It did coincide with the mini budget but then having googled the euro did bottom out on 27th Sept which is around same time as pound. What happened for them I wonder to be the same day

SarahSissions · 01/10/2022 17:08

@MarshaBradyo nothing. The pound and euro have been artificially high for too long. Just like interest rates have been too low for too long. The problem is that they rely on someone making a positive decision to change them which people have been loathe to do. The mini-budget may have precipitated it, but it didn’t CAUSE it.

every rate review for that past year people have been saying that rates can’t stay that low- but the BoE hasn’t wanted to make a decision. The world is swinging back to normal. Let’s be honest Kwarteng doesn’t really have the clout to cause all of this- it might be fun to blame him- but it’s all a load of blarney

Thanks for this. I’m actually amazed the Euro movement hasn’t been picked up for the sake of the narrative around the mini budget

I thought we had a press committed to doing PR for tories (according to many I mean). Maybe not

MangyInseam · 01/10/2022 17:15

Compared to what OP?

I pay more for food, in general, here in Canada than I would pay in the UK. Other prices are largely comparable. Oil not always but, we have a totally different scenario there geographically.

Housing can be cheaper but also down to geography.

Our dollar has also tanked, though for different reasons.

The UK has more than 2500 foodbanks. Do we win?

I never understand why people in the UK don't seem to think other countries have food banks.

I remember when they first came into the UK, people were very upset. I took note because Canada has had food banks since I was a tiny child in the early 70s. Lot's of soup kitchens too.

As do other countries.

Kissingfrogs25 · Today 14:33
It’s not any worse, it’s has been entirely lost on half of MN that some countries are much worse off in fact! Its a typical myopic and politically motivated overreaction, showing a distinct inability to look beyond their own tiny bubble. They just scream tories or brexit at literally everything it’s painfully ill informed.

The U.K. economy is still growing - we are not even in recession. Forecast for more growth next year!! It’s really pathetic. So I get you“

which countries would they be? Perhaps someone ought to inform the IMF?

The IMF are very political and don’t agree with the new governments ideas, hardly breaking news. We will see in the coming months who was right. OPR now revised the growth after screaming recession for months. The pound has totally stabilised, mortgages are back on the shelves.
We are indeed one of the only countries on the continent that is not in recession or very soon will be.

The cost of living crisis is happening absolutely everywhere, inflation is rising the same as ours everywhere. Energy issues are far bigger in Europe to be fair, but as usual it’s always ‘worse here’

People are suffering thanks to Putin, and we are going to have to accept this is part of the consequences of war, for all of us, and be reminded what the Ukrainians are going through is a million times worse.

I wasn’t comparing the UK to Africa.
I was answering the poster’s question about where these types of power cuts could be taking place.

We’re clearly not the worst, that’s obvious before this thread was started. The question is, is it that bad?

And very many people on here clearly agree (a lot of it based on reported
knowledge of other economy’s) that it’s not.

We British love to talk ourselves down!
It’s tiresome.

inheritanceshiteagain · 01/10/2022 17:48

Because food prices were incredibly low to start with so any rise is going to hurt and cause an outcry

inheritanceshiteagain · 01/10/2022 17:51

We also love slagging off our country

Do people in the UK think that @MangyInseam?

There are very often people on discussions like this, as you can see on this very thread, who seem to think the existence of food banks in the UK means they must be worse off.

Of course if other countries also have lots of food banks that logic doesn't really follow. Which made me wonder if many people were ill informed about the prevalence of food banks elsewhere.

Can you read?
The question re where the powers cuts were taking place, is why Africa was mentioned, not by way of direct comparison to living there versus living here.

And yet it’s worse in so many countries.

So what shitshow is it exactly that’s been created, and what are the impacts of it.

You referenced the IMF who in unusual move made the comments that they did.

It wasn’t a holistic summary of why the UK is ‘worse’ than everywhere else.

Your question re the IMF was answered factually.

Thanks for yours and your husbands CV.

I don’t care.

Although presumably you were good at your job, so you should be able to formulate sensible responses.

But don’t throw in a strawman for the sake of it then, and not expect to be challenged.
