Why is it worse in the U.K.

Thatsaturdayfeeling · 01/10/2022 09:46

I’m British but not in the U.K. at the moment. Where I am, we also have food price increases and petrol was v high for a while, but it’s all not to the extent as the U.K…why is the U.K. in such dire straits compared to other places?

Yabu

i have lived in uk, uae, Malaysia in the last 10 years, and have family in HOng Kong, plus visited Singapore and Japan. It is not worse in the UK, but no where else have I seen this bizarre attitude of bashing your own country and constant hysteria and agitating to tear everything down.

I agree, although it’s more prevalent on mn

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/10/2022 14:23

It's really not more prevalent on MN. In clubs, bookies, cafés, shops and homes up and down the UK, people are saying how bad things are.

Maybe the difference between us and other countries is the government. Far from providing a plan, ours tanked the economy and made clear their contempt for the UK electorate in their "mini budget" last week.Angry

Kissingfrogs25 · 01/10/2022 14:33

It’s not any worse, it’s has been entirely lost on half of MN that some countries are much worse off in fact! Its a typical myopic and politically motivated overreaction, showing a distinct inability to look beyond their own tiny bubble. They just scream tories or brexit at literally everything it’s painfully ill informed.

The U.K. economy is still growing - we are not even in recession. Forecast for more growth next year!! It’s really pathetic. So I get you op.

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/10/2022 14:36

Did the IMF announce warnings to any other country last week?

which countries would they be? Perhaps someone ought to inform the IMF?

olddustbag · 01/10/2022 14:42

Food, household products, toiletries are all much cheaper than the USA (even taking exchange rates into account)

The IMF wasn’t commenting on day to day living in the Uk was it.

It was commenting on the shit show of a mini budget the government mustered up and how it was at odds with fiscal policy and the impact it might have.

At least try to understand what you post about, before posting.

TheDogsMother · 01/10/2022 15:02

I'm currently in the South of France and self catering some of our meals. I have shopped in large Carrefour and Intermarche stores and they certainly don't seem cheaper than the UK. Wine maybe but meat, fish, fruit and veg seem the same as I was paying at Sainsburys a couple of weeks ago.

Generally speaking of course supermarket is rarely cheaper than UK, never really has been.

Fuel (at the pumps) ATM is plus/minus depends on very much on where you fill up, locally if you hunt around you''ll find diesel is about £1.51, unleaded petrol £1.38..

Snowberry3 · 01/10/2022 15:34

We have awful media Daily Mail, etc etc etc who could convince anyone of anything eventuallly.

EasterIssland · 01/10/2022 15:39

I’m Spanish. Food has gone up. Petrol has gone up. Electricity has gone up. Salaries haven’t gone up. € has devalued. Unemployment is high. Don’t think I’d be much better back at home than in the uk

MsPincher · 01/10/2022 15:41

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with criticism of the uK. It’s not perfect and we can’t improve things if we BBC are not honest about what they are like at the moment. However as many have said on the thread, things aren’t particularly worse in the uK at the moment. Inflation is rising everywhere and uK has one of the highest minimum wages in the world.

I don't think that is true. Many posters have pointed out that it's bad everywhere but it's not at all controversial to state that Brexit and the Tories have made things worse in the UK.

QueueEtwo · 01/10/2022 15:47

I'd be interested to know how many people in other European Countries are reliant on food banks!

WhiteCatmas · 01/10/2022 16:04

Brexit

HelloDoggy · 01/10/2022 16:09

Well, Borris followed by Truss...

HelloDoggy · 01/10/2022 16:10

At least we've 'got Borris done'. Just need to (v quickly) get Truss done and then hopefully we can elect a slightly better government

I'm not sure how many are actually reliant but there are more than a few who use their services...

twitter.com/eurofoodbanks?lang=en

"the European Food Banks Federation (FEBA) represents more than 341 Food Banks and branches in 30 countries, who helped 11.8 million people in 2021."

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/10/2022 16:27

The UK has more than 2500 foodbanks. Do we win?

pawkins · 01/10/2022 16:27

RudsyFarmer · 01/10/2022 13:25

It’s so terrible to live here that people risk their lives to cross the Channel every single day.

Welfare and difficult deportation might be the reasons rather than how you be perceive it?

pawkins · 01/10/2022 16:32

isthismylifenow · 01/10/2022 11:38

It's not just UK OP.

I'm also in another country and we have a cost of living crisis too..

We don't even have electricity all day! This week I had 4 hours of electricity in the day. There isn't enough to go around. (there are other factors but that's a whole other thread)

Our saving grace is that we don't need to heat our homes, but we certainly haven't got off lightly.

This is a UK based site, so you will hear more about the UK situation here.

Where are you btw?

What country are you in? Are you in Pakistan? I can’t find any info re countries limited to four hours electricity a day? And I’m not sure when comparing the UK to other countries they mean Asia rather than EU countries? Although I may be wrong…..
I’m sure the UK does not compare that badly against some parts of Asia……

Quincythequince · 01/10/2022 16:34

Very bad in North Africa re power cuts recently wasn’t it?

notimagain · 01/10/2022 16:36

Wild guess I'd be looking a long way south of the UK rather than east(and the op probably can't answer without outing themselves).
