We've used £3.30 already. Yesterday we used £5.80

No heating on
Washing machine has been on a quick cycle
2 x showers (total 10 mins?)
1x TV on
Kettle boiled 3x
Usual things plugged in / on standby (fridge/freezer/other TVs etc)
No lights on

Still need to do another wash, 2 small children need a bath (will share), 1 teenager needs a shower, kettle will be on at least another 3/4 times. Dinner to be made.

We can never seem to stick to our 'budget' (who sets that? The company?) unless we're out all day.

How do you manage to stick to your budget ? Seems unmanageable (2ad, 1 teenager, 1 infant school & 1 baby)

We're £400 in credit over the summer but DD has gone from £105 to £291 !

£1.20 for gas and £1.70 for electricity. We've been on a fix since July that is almost exactly at the new price cap (we fixed before the intervention by the new government so thought it would be cheaper at the time).

Tumble dryer was on for 30 minutes. It's cold and damp where I am and if I leave the washing on the dryer it takes a couple of days so rather that cut out my tumble dryer all together I'm using it to give the washing a start before finishing on the dryer rack.

Kids had TV on most of the morning. I've found that can add quite a bit.

Thermostat is set to 17 and it has clicked on in the morning recently for half an hour or so and I'm finding that adds a pound. It hasn't been on today.

I wash everything at 20, even towels. I don't understand why people think you need to wash at 40 for towels. You have to heat things above 60 to kill germs. In your laundry, it's the soap that breaks down the casing of the germs to kill them, not the temperature. You can wash your hands with cold water and soap, it's only suggested that we use hot water for comfort. If you washed at a temperature hot enough to kill germs you would probably scold your skin. My clothes come out clean.

We're up to £5.74!

Not a clue.

When it's gone, it's gone.

Wombatbum · 01/10/2022 19:13

We are on £3.29. No washing done because washing machine has broken 😩

InCheesusWeTrust · 01/10/2022 19:18

Looking online today, I am surprised how many people are on variable tariffs. Thought more people fixed

DoodlePug · 01/10/2022 19:20

I dont have a smart meter but reading every day to argue with Scottish Power about my dd.

So quick calculation I've spent best part of £10

Heating on for about 2 hours, 1 load of washing that went in the drier, 1 dishwasher cycle, 2 meals cooked in the multicooker. That's pretty much a normal day for me.

Never heard of the budget thing, you only need to worry about what you can afford and try not to waste energy unnecessarily.

Don't forget the standing charge of around 80p a day for dual fuel.

xogossipgirlxo · 01/10/2022 19:21

£3.09 so far.

Two showers
Washing on 40 degrees for 1.5 hour
Laptop and big screen on
Cooking 2.5 hrs
Kettle - no idea, 5-6 times already?
Toaster, porridge for breakfast etc.
Dehumidifier on for 5 hours on high mode

This includes standing charges. No idea how you spent this much at 9AM.

InMySpareTime · 01/10/2022 19:23

Up to £1.63 now

Nanalisa60 · 01/10/2022 19:26

I have used £15 of electric this week , one more day to go so will come in about £17/18 this week.

RewildingAmbridge · 01/10/2022 19:30

We've used 4.65 so far today, that's 3 loads of washing, two dishwasher loads, I cooked a casserole on the hob then it went into the oven for an hour with a tray of roasted veg, boiled new potatoes and steamed broccoli on the hob, also baked banana bread so had both ovens on for about 45 minutes, I had thought I'd get it all in one hence the banana bread but it wouldn't all fit. Two showers, a bath and TV on for a couple of hours this afternoon. No heating, it's been quite sunny here today. No consoles, computers etc.
Old draughty Edwardian semi.

RewildingAmbridge · 01/10/2022 19:31

Oh forgot, made poached eggs and Porridge for breakfast and the kettle has probably been on 5/6 times and I've charged the hoover batteries and the eufy charging base is on all of the time

Quick cycles on the washing machine use more energy because they have to spin harder/faster.

Use the eco setting. Or use a cold wash with laundry powder for cold washes. Something like 90% of the energy used is heating the water in the washing machine.

You only actually need a hot wash for towels and bedding. Everything else can go in a cold wash and then it costs pennies.

Is this true? My eco cycle is 2hrs 38...quick wash is 28 mins. Surely having the machine on for 28mins is going to be cheaper?

I'm questioning myself now!

You can google your model and manual. It should show usage per cycle

93p for today so far. But we are still on our fixed deal from two years ago. I think we are going to be in for a shock when we finish that deal in in November.

Two years? Brace yourself 😬

cakeorwine · 01/10/2022 20:20

KWH

We have so far used 2.64 KWH electricity and 10 KWH of gas.

Been out most of the day and used the oven for cooking. Plus had the heating on a bit

Depends on temperature, time and speed of spin.

Energy is used for heating water and moving the drum.

DashboardConfessional · 01/10/2022 20:24

£1.83. 2 showers, 1 bath, no heating, 1 wash at 20 degrees. Just lights, TV, kettle and charging phones. Dinner is defrosted batch cook so will go in the microwave.

Afterfire · 01/10/2022 20:26

We’ve used 13kw of electric and 30kw of gas today - done a few dishwasher loads and couple of washes, and had the heating on for about 3 hours. 🫣

bumblefeline · 01/10/2022 20:26

About £5.87 at the moment. Heating set at 21 so has been off and on all day. Two loads of washing and one tumble drier load.

CrabbyCat · 01/10/2022 20:30

@CoastalWave we have one of those plug things so checked on our washing machine. For us, at the same temperature the long ecocycle uses less electricity than the shorter daily cycle. It's because it leaves the washing sitting there to soak (which takes longer) rather than spinning it with the water to get the dirt out more quickly.

ferretface · 01/10/2022 20:34

£3.41 as of now of which £1.21 is gas. The only gas usage we have had today is for two showers and a bath and the standing charge. I calculated that a short shower followed by a bath (I had been for a run and the bath was just for relaxation!) costs about 60p at the new rate. This doesn't take into account the government rebate but expecting the central heating to be rather expensive when we do need to run it later in the year.

CraftyGin · 01/10/2022 20:35

If you use your washing machine on an eco mode, it takes a lot longer, because the clothes are basically soaking in the detergent water for an hour or more. This makes a lot of eco sense both on energy and detergent use.

olddustbag · 01/10/2022 20:40

Not got a smart meter but mine will be about £15 a day.
The gas aga was £7 a day last month.

NewBootsAndRanty · 01/10/2022 20:42

21kwh gas, 1kwh electric; heating at 18°.
£2.25 of gas, 34p or thereabouts electric, plus standing charges.
