Ugh men can be pigs

I flew into Edinburgh airport this afternoon with DP and my teen son and daughter. They have a system there for ordering taxis with large touch screens - as tall as a person. There are 3 screens but just one was in use for ordering cabs with a staff member assisting while the others were live and connected to the internet.

In front of us was a group on a blokes weekend to celebrate a 60th birthday. One of the younger (30ish) members of the group brought up a porn search on one of the screens which then became full of images of full on porn - fisting etc.

DP and I immediately very loudly objected and I jumped in to help one of the older guys who was trying to get rid of it from the screen without much success. He was obviously embarrassed. But the rest were all just whooping and saying things like ‘can’t take you anywhere’ while laughing. It was 2pm, there were little kids, women, older people in the queue subjected to this. The guys weren’t drunk. Surely it’s not too much to ask to not behave like animals in public?

Ugh. I’m okay with porn but fuckin hell is nothing sacred from children anymore.
he needs to learn to read a room

HowzAboutIt · 30/09/2022 19:24

How disgusting. Yes men can be pigs.
Lots aren't of course! I know loads that are loving, respectful and beautiful people.
But sadly lots are vile and you met a crowd of them today

Cuppasoupmonster · 30/09/2022 19:26

For fucks sake. YANBU most men are vile pigs, yes they might be all lovely and well mannered at home but in my experience most of them end up behaving like this in a crowd of mates. Especially when they’ve had a few drinks.

I saw an article a while ago about an all-female settlement in Kenya, I feel sorely tempted to start something similar.

FourChimneys · 30/09/2022 19:31

I know a few lovely considerate men.

The vast majority are indeed animals even if they have a civilised veneer. Especially in a group where they have to show off to establish their status. Yuck.

AsAnyFuleKno · 30/09/2022 19:36

Amazes me that it wouldn't have been firewalled on company PCs.

YellowTreeHouse · 30/09/2022 19:48

YABU. Don’t label all men by their low standards.

Men are not a homogenous group that all think and act the same.

MadeForThis · 30/09/2022 19:49

Edinburgh airport should have had the search function blocked so this couldn't appear.

worriedatthistime · 30/09/2022 20:01

@Cuppasoupmonster I have seen plenty of hen parties behave pretty poorly too
And most men wouldn't think this was ok in an airport where kids are , not any I know
Yes maybe down the pub etc loud and noisey

worriedatthistime · 30/09/2022 20:02

But in very surprised this wasn't blocked at the airport
Like it is in most companies etc
Very surprised and surely you could also complain to them

AirFryerNinja · 30/09/2022 20:07

I doubt this happened. The airport would have a firewall to prevent access to certain sites, porn being one of them.

Carproblem · 30/09/2022 20:09

Virtually all men given the opportunity will act like animals. It's in the DNA.

Carproblem · 30/09/2022 20:11

If something is cast from your own smart phone using your own data settings, firewalls etc won't apply.

JunebuginDecember · 30/09/2022 20:12

Honestly OP I find that statement very offensive to pigs. As someone who worked at a petting zoo for years I can tell you pigs are wonderful and affectionate creatures that shouldn't be conflated with human males whatsoever.

Less men, more pigs. That's my slogan when I run in the next council election 😂

UWhatNow · 30/09/2022 20:13

All you can do with Neanderthals like this is to call it out every single time. It must become the norm to publicly stigmatise misogynist behaviour like this in order to change behaviour. Like smoking in pubs and topless calendars in workplaces are anachronistic now. You did well to complain op - some dipshits still think this is ‘boys will be boys’ ‘what goes on tour stays on tour’ mentality.

AllAboutMargot · 30/09/2022 20:22

Please don't liken this rotten behaviour to pigs nor to animals in general.

Animals deserve our respect.

outtheshowernow · 30/09/2022 20:24

Men in groups generally behaved like complete knob heads. It's actually embarrassing for them. Disgusting behaviour I hope someone told them so aswell.

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/09/2022 20:26

Do you mean some men?

That wouldn’t enter my husband’s or son’s head.

not whataboutery, just reality. Some men are no doubt pigs, most, thankfully, aren’t.

I was abused by both my father and my brother. Without exception, every other man I have known has been good and kind.

StoneofDestiny · 30/09/2022 20:27

Not all men are like that - most men I meet are decent human beings. Some men in big groups on nights out etc can be oafish - as can some women in large groups.

Oh come on there’s no comparison. Men are much more likely to pull a stupid stunt like this.

Playing pornography in public, especially if children are around, is illegal - outraging public decency. Report it OP and see how funny they find their silly prank when it comes back to bite them.

nokidshere · 30/09/2022 20:30

Regardless of anything else I would be complaining loudly to whoever allowed this in the first place! Who owns the screens and why does it allow anything other than to search for taxis etc. I am totally amazed that this is allowed to happen in a public place.

OriginalUsername3 · 30/09/2022 20:34

Surely that's illegal? Indecent exposure?

Herejustforthisone · 30/09/2022 20:38

I know some lovely men, real good eggs. They still turn into a bunch of unbearable twats at the sniff of a ‘boys trip’.

Herejustforthisone · 30/09/2022 20:38

Bugger. Forgot the apostrophe.

scoobydoo1971 · 30/09/2022 21:10

I was up in Hyde Park in the summer watching a gig. There was a hen party outside the event, all had been drinking a lot by the looks of it and one had a blown up giant penis toy to accompany her 'shag me while you can' top and bridal head piece covered in condoms. I couldn't help but wonder why she couldn't at least come up with something original. However, as I queued with my teenage son to get into the gig, things turned nasty between these ladies and a shouting match of insults soon turned into a punch up, shoes started flying and they were ripping each other apart. The bride to be was hitting one of her bridesmaid's with her inflatable penis so hard that she burst it, much to the amusement of onlookers but then she really started punching her hard so security intervened thankfully. Laughs aside, it is not just men who behave badly in public places.

Remaker · 30/09/2022 23:36

For those doubting, I can guarantee it happened. Why would I make it up? And horrifying
that the first instinct from so many women is to rush to the defence of men and share anecdotes about women misbehaving on hens nights. It’s no surprise men behave like this when women are so desperate to defend and enable them. My DP was as disgusted as I was. I don’t know why the airport hasn’t blocked this, I don’t even know if the system is very new as I am a tourist visiting from Australia. I just know that people in my life know how to behave respectfully and don’t need to be prevented from showing disgusting material in public.
