Forgot my password and tried to reset by getting a security text sent to my phone. I’ve forgotten it a few times in the past and this way has always worked. I’ve got 2 factor authentication turned on with my mobile phone.

this time, it sent the security code to my
phone and then after I correctly put it in, it wanted to send a security code to my email too (the same email I’m locked out of! Not sure why as this isn’t saved as my recovery email) ive tried selecting the try another way option and it just says I’ve not given enough information and takes me back to page where it sends a text to my phone. Once I do that, it’s back to sending it to my email. It’s just a constant cycle like that.

There’s no other options or way to recover. It doesn’t give me options to answer security questions or provide more information. I’m using the same device and WiFi I usually use. The phone number is correct and the account isn’t logged in anywhere else.

im absolutely devastated- I have all my personal emails, some of which were really
important to me and I really wanted to keep. I also have my photos and everything on my
Google account. I had 2 factor authentication on and did everything I was supposed to do but I don’t know what’s going on, I’ve never had this problem before. There’s no way to contact Google either.

if anyone has any advice or experience please please help me x

Maybe try asking on the Google support hub? I'm not 100% on how to fix it but they're normally pretty knowledgeable on there

Thanks anyway, I tried that but apparently they can’t help because it’s just a normal Google account, not a business thing :(

Did you try the community one?

No advice, sorry, but am watching because I have the same problem trying to recover an old account! Have tried Google support hub but it has been no help so far. Commiserations OP, it's shit.

MarsupiIami · 28/09/2022 12:46

Did you print out the rescue codes when you sent 2fa up?

I ended up buying a titan because this is my nightmare!

MarsupiIami · 28/09/2022 12:49

Also, are you not logged on on your phone? Chrome?

Thanks, all the posts I found which were similar to my problem suggested answering all the questions about the account as accurately as possible (eg details of old passwords etc) but I can’t even get on to this page for some reason. Just an endless loop of verification code to my phone and email x

did you follow those instructions? accounts.google.com/signin/recovery

Cornisharchitect8 · 28/09/2022 13:04

Were you signed in on any other devices? Twitter locked me out of my account recently and as I had no phone or email link - there was no way to reset the password or prove thr account was mine.

I switched on my old phone from earlier this year, reset it and reloaded from a backup where I knew I was likely to be signed in. I bypassed all the usual security checks and managed to regain access to my account! I cried with relief 🤣

Yeah, that’s what’s giving me the endless loop of sending a confirmation code to my phone and then the email :(

No, I’m using the same device I always use :( I don’t have an old browser opened either x that’s great you managed to get into your account!

It's stressful when you're locked out.

I would stop trying for a day and maybe email them tomorrow. The more you try the longer your account will be locked.

I'm sure I was once locked out of my Google account and they asked me for my DOB, location and any old passwords that I previously used. (Was a few years ago now though!)

Don't give it, but do be patient xx

It doesn't matter what 2fa you set up, Google tells you to keep the 10 codes for emergencies. I'm guessing from your answer you didn't though. You would skip the 2fa by using one of the codes.

Anyone else who didn't print them off - go and do it now! support.google.com/accounts/answer/1187538?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop

I'm not 100% sure this would even help you as I've never come across your problem before (the email code, sounds bizarre). I'd go and ask on the Google sub on reddit.

I'm signed in on so many devices, I can't quite get my head round only using 1 device! What device is it?

I definitely never got given 10 codes! I turned on 2 factor authentication, it asked for my mobile number and sent a code to verify it and then I had to put in my password and it added it to my account. I was never given a code (other than the one time codes that get texted to me when I need to log in, but they expire after 1 use) this is the first time I’ve ever had any issues with my account and usually it lets me reset my password via a text code x

OP I found this from a forum with someone who has the same problem as you. This is what one of the experts said:

If you have attempted the account recovery form/process many times in the last 24 hours, kindly wait for one week before attempting another account recovery form (do not attempt to sign in or submit account recovery form during the one week period).

After you wait for one week, kindly use account recovery form with the recommended steps highlighted in the help articles below:
How to recover your Google account: support.google.com/accounts/answer/7682439
Tips to complete your account recovery form: support.google.com/accounts/answer/7299973
For additional info, you may also check this article: gmailaccountrecovery.blogspot.com/.
Use account recovery form from previous logged in location/ip address, used device/computer and browser for the account as Google will also check those in the backend when you go through account recovery form.
If you are unable to provide one of the verification details such as 2sv or backup code or recovery phone or email address, you may skip it by selecting "Try another way" in account recovery form.
The link to account recovery form: accounts.google.com/signin/v2/recoveryidentifier?flowName=GlifWebSignIn&flowEntry=ServiceLogin
