Am told the BoE were responding to a “run dynamic” on pension funds - a wholesale equivalent of the run which destroyed Northern Rock.
Had they not intervened, there would have been mass insolvencies of pension funds by THIS AFTERNOON.

ICanHideButICantRun · 28/09/2022 15:44

It's the Peter Principle at work. They've both been promoted to their own level of incompetence.

Honestly. I think we may be headed for a general election. The chaos just feels overwhelming at the moment. I'm tired and scared and trying to hold it together. Who the heck do I vote for? I would never vote Tory but can anyone say which of the other parties might be a bit more competent and actually want to try to help the people of those country.

Duh…any of them would be better.

Wheretheskyisblue · 28/09/2022 15:50

I think the most likely short term scenario is that Kwasi Kwarteng is forced to step down and Truss does a u turn on the 45p tax. Be interesting to see who replaces him as chancellor, don't think many would be up for it.

Ylvamoon · 28/09/2022 15:54

(light hearted).

We need a new political party with fresh ideas and intelligent people at the helm.
I think some mumsnet users are up for the job, the party of course will be called MunsNetUsresRus!

Yes, we are printing money again out of nothing to keep liquidity. Cue more inflation more pound cratering rinse and repeat. We are now ground zero for the beginning of a global stock market crash and the beginning of the end of the 'everything bubble. The world is watching the UK with a mixture of utter horror and apprehension. Grim times indeed.

Comes across as pretty arrogant. I wonder if they even think they have done anything wrong. Completely incompetent.

Of course not. Exactly the same thing happened in the early 1980s and we went on to have an economic boom time for the rest of the decade. People really do have very short memories.

Might that not have been something to do with having recently joined the Common Market?

It’s like watching a slow horrific car crash, knowing that the majority of the Country are going to be badly injured!

It shouldn’t be an option for Truss and Kwarsi to dig their heels in. The power needs to be taken away from them!

KnickerlessParsons · 29/09/2022 09:28

The Tories are the definition of unelectable right now. Would take some turnaround by 2024.

Just a gut feel that enough people will not vote Labour and that the Conservatives will cling on with No outright majority and we'd be no further forward.

Now if Labour changed its leader (though not to Angela), I'd change my prediction.

I think it will be harder than we think to get rid of Rosa Klebb and Chucky.

I remember the 1980s as a period that started with massive unemployment, the destruction of our manufacturing base and which ended with massive interest rates. Hardly something to aspire to.

Don’t forget Madonna dancing around in her crop top. A mate of mine aspired to that. The rest of it, not so much, especially remembering the miners’ strikes and watching pit villages go under.

RoseyPalm · 29/09/2022 10:22

My FWB told me that Bank of England 'only' bought £1Billion yesterday, and that was enough to stabilise the mkts.
"Everybody in the business could just see what the international reaction would be. Everybody from Warren Buffet, Crispin Odey, Barclays Bank and penny-a-point traders on IG.

So why didn't he tell me!?!? [The peaks of romanticism]

and t'Billy Bragg - saw him more times than I care to remember at various gigs, benefits and protests.

Look at the poll's ?

The tories got shot of Bojo very quickly when labour got a 7% lead.

People will often vote for self interest, so my in laws have changed from the Tories because of their recent experiences of the NHS.

Millions of people will see energy bills double, even with help, from last year and now pensions and mortgages fucked over.

I still think they'll both be gone within the month, if i'm wrong, KK def will be.

Completely disagree with Labour leadership, in times of crisis, people don't want "charisma" and it looks like KS is making a virtue of his "boring" imagine..

Truss's attempts trying to be a Thatcher, with "i'm not for turning" will turn off even more voters, no one likes a fraud.

Theres no road map for this she's born a lame duck and shall govern as a lame duck. Conference is going to be fun.Tragic for the country and us though they are electoral squatters trashing the house whilst we stand outside unable to do anything. Enough is Enough demos in your area October 1st.

I'm wondering if it'll be as end of next week/beginning of following one. Jeremy Hunt has been given the mandate to tweak the mini budget and it sounds we like other things will be removed, ie tax or NI. She's going to have to convince everyone that her ideas and policies, might not work now but she can get them through before next GE and have them working, otherwise she's hasn't got incrediability.

We're visiting Westminster soon, do I build it into our trip to be the other side of Downing Street and cheer as the lectern comes out? Mind you, a celebration drink in a London pub is appealing.

vera99 · 15/10/2022 09:46

Brutal. When you've lost the Mail as a tory then you truly are toast. As Dinah Washington says "What a difference a day makes..."
