She wont last, Tory MPs wont tolerate these international embarrassments or the decimation in the polls.

Of course not. Exactly the same thing happened in the early 1980s and we went on to have an economic boom time for the rest of the decade. People really do have very short memories.

Frankly fed up of people trotting out that it was the same thing. Thatcher stabilised the economy BEFORE making tax cuts. No fan of Thatcher but she wasn't an idiot.

SleeplessInEngland · 28/09/2022 13:33

Lol, that's the first 'this happened under Thatcher so everything will be fine' post I've seen in the wild. People can convince themselves of anything.

I remember the 1980s as a period that started with massive unemployment, the destruction of our manufacturing base and which ended with massive interest rates. Hardly something to aspire to.

Sillysop92 · 28/09/2022 13:34

The Tory MPs and press will just wait for Starmer to make a miniscule mistake and pounce! All over the media, discredit Labour. Then all will be forgotten and GE in 2024! Or they'll bring back Boris!

FarmerRefuted · 28/09/2022 13:35

I reckon she's just thick arrogant enough to call a GE if she gets backed into a corner and it seems like the least shit option compared to a VONC. By MP logic, losing an election means the electorate are rubbish whereas losing a VONC mean you/your party are rubbish.

SleeplessInEngland · 28/09/2022 13:36

Starmer has asked for an emergency parliement recall to discuss the bank of england's decision. Truss and Kwarteng still MIA.

Thatcher got lucky with north sea oil, she didn't borrow billions uncosted to fund tax cuts for the rich. She also sold the family silver.

Completely different situations. It's not the 80s. Only comparison is millions suffered then and millions will now.

I wish people would stop repeating this. A vote can’t happen for a year.

Only according to internal Tory party rules (if what you've said is even correct). They can change them to whatever they like, as they were about to for Bojo.

Even failing that, she could be brought down in the Commons - it would only need enough MPs to override the majority, so about 40. Unlikely they'd do that but the point still stands that there is no "can't".

SleeplessInEngland · 28/09/2022 13:45

Gotta be some tory mps tempted to cross the floor at the next parliament. Pretty clear which way the wing's blowing, and they don't all have cushy directorships to fall back once they lose the MP salary.

SleeplessInEngland · 28/09/2022 13:45

of course it can. Boris was in exactly the same position - he had survived his no confidence vote and the rules said that he couldn't be challenged again for a year.

If 50% of the government resign from Truss' government as they did from Boris, she will not be able to carry on. it will either be another leadership vote or an election.

I don't think it is likely (because of the risk of an election at which the conservative party will be wiped out) but it is certainly possible.

fluffiphlox · 28/09/2022 13:47

If only.

Nidan2Sandan · 28/09/2022 13:50

I voted YABU because it wont happen.

I'd rather a GE so the country can make a choice. We didn't choose Truss.

SleeplessInEngland · 28/09/2022 13:51

A few tory mps starting to go public on twitter with their concern. Doesn't mean letters submitted but it's all very reminiscent of the weeks before Johnson had to finally fuck off.

MintJulia · 28/09/2022 13:55

A month! I was think more like a week. I've already emailed my MP. Made it clear they lose my vote if Kwarteng doesn't u-turn and then fall on his sword.

They are an embarrassment. They don't have a clue what they are doing and they need to go right now.

Err...I'm guessing I'm not the only one !

Most Tory MPs offices have been inundated over the last two days. They aren't stupid when it comes to protecting their jobs. Unrest on the Tory back benches is building.

Yes exactly, Kwartengs budget is going to really hit solid Tory voters with investments, pensions & the exchange rate.

She'll get the blame for this & will go, i think a month is actually generous.

Caveat is the Tory Party Conf but really, what is she going to tell them?

Tories are like bedbugs. Practically impossible to get rid of.

millymog11 · 28/09/2022 14:01

Where is Rishi?

Laughing his arse off in one of his mansions.

pullpullpullthattail · 28/09/2022 14:02

I'm moving between disbelief and remembering that anything is possible with these deplorables in government.
The headlines are terrifying. How HOW can LT and KK be doubling down when the BoE and the bloody IMF have needed to intervene??? I'm just so baffled by it all right now tbh.

IndigoC · 28/09/2022 14:11

Peston tweeted that a Tory minister told him Kwarteng is toast.

What a shambles.

Kissingfrogs25 · 28/09/2022 14:11

It won't happen.
If she pulls it off, she won't need to worry anyway.

MintJulia · 28/09/2022 14:12

Kearteng has confirmed 'he is working with the BoE and the OBR.'

I take that to mean he's been roasted, called to heel and hopefully a gradual u-turn followed by him stepping down as soon as humanly possible.

I hope. Honestly, what an idiot.
