She wont last, Tory MPs wont tolerate these international embarrassments or the decimation in the polls.

Well we can all see she hasn't pulled it off. Otherwise why would the BoE need to intervene?

Yup, the moment the BoE inervened the window for 'pulling it off' wasn't so much closed as covered in 10 feet concrete.

Sometimessometime · 28/09/2022 14:16

Do you remember at state events there used to be 3 or 4 living Prime Ministers who proudly took their places. At this rate there'll be a gaggle of Tories, all with a few months under their belts. I feel like there should be a probation period- you don't get invited if you last less than 9 months.

AlternativelyWired · 28/09/2022 14:18

What's happened? I've been stuck in a hospital clinic today and have missed something it seems.

Laughing his arse off in one of his mansions.

He isn't going to the Tory party conference.

Sunak for his many faults, wasn't an idiot, had he won, Kwarteng & Truss would have been on the back benches and we'd be in a far better place.

Whilst this is a god given chance for Labour, its actually very very bad for UK plc and that matters more.

Maybe she has more self awareness than Boris (unlikely) and maybe she'll resign instead (unlikely)

I can but hope!

She must KNOW she's an idiot and that she's royally phaffed up?

She surely must have more self-awareness than Johnson, who appeared to have zero, and at least slightly more personal integrity than him, again on the grounds that it would be pretty hard to have less than him. That probably won't lead her to resign though. I was thinking recently about whether I've ever know a PM resign without being pushed or forced by circumstances (lost Brexit referendum, lost GE etc.). Blair, maybe? He was pretty unpopular by the time he resigned but I don't remember that there was anything really dramatic that pushed him over the edge.

As for Kwarteng, I don't agree with people calling him an idiot. He is, by all reports, a very intelligent man. I think he geniunely believes in these policies, not that he fails to understand them. Doesn't make them any less wrong, but he's surely more evil than stupid.

We need an election not another round of tory parlour games where they spend weeks picking yet another useless leader.

Conservatives would win with a tiny majority/hung Parliament.

User135644 · 28/09/2022 15:12

"At last a real Tory budget". Tory press must have written Labour's election slogan already. They backed this.

Yeah Kwaeteng is from the Thatcher mould. Callous and psychopathic but knows what he's doing. Thatcher got lucky with circumstances.

Truss is a chameleon and an idiot.

bellabasset · 28/09/2022 15:17

@millymog11 Rishi is in a difficult situation as the 'loser' if he publicly stands up and criticises her.

I'm no economist but I couldn't believe the tax cuts. What would you do:
• Reverse the ER's NIC only as this impacts on business costs
• Increase the PA to £13,500 rather than cut PAYE.
•Cut the higher rate of tax for £150,000 to 30p and set up staggered increases in 5p bands
• Increaee

@KnickerlessParsons
''Conservatives would win with a tiny majority/hung Parliament.''

Really? on what planet?

Considering the lead that Labour has in the polls there is no way that the tories will be voted back in if there was an election.

The Tories are the definition of unelectable right now. Would take some turnaround by 2024.

Within the month might be a bit optimistic but I can see the vultures circling after the party conference unless she really pulls it out of the bag.

There is no bag and the only thing she can pull is KK and looks how that's turned out!

That's what they said after Thatcher. And John Major won !

I know you want to believe it but I think you underestimate how many people fear Momentum.

I reckon all the MPs have a stack of ‘no confidence’ memos already typed and just need to insert the name at the top.

More time effective to do it that way.

verdantverdure · 28/09/2022 15:33

It is utterly gobsmacking that the UK central bank has had to step in to protect the UK from the actions of the UK's own government.

Kendodd · 28/09/2022 15:33

Problem is, who would replace her? Brexit Boris purged the Tory party of anyone with any competence.

The economic situation isn't the same as the late 80s. People making this comparison sound like left-behind Japanese soldiers who think WW2's still going on.

mintywinter · 28/09/2022 15:34

Too late, the damage is done. We can't face another leadership contest surely. General Election is needed.

MissyB1 · 28/09/2022 15:35

We need a general election asap, as far as I’m concerned I would call this a state of emergency. You can’t keep those lunatics in charge, they are destroying us.

TeaMistress · 28/09/2022 15:35

Honestly. I think we may be headed for a general election. The chaos just feels overwhelming at the moment. I'm tired and scared and trying to hold it together. Who the heck do I vote for? I would never vote Tory but can anyone say which of the other parties might be a bit more competent and actually want to try to help the people of those country.

If you constituency is tory then check its past voting record and vote for whoever came second.

I wouldn't count on it. Never underestimate the power of the Daily Mail on the gullible.

MintJulia · 28/09/2022 15:37

I'm not saying the situation is the same. I'm saying the British electorate does unexpected things and you can't rely on a result until it is announced.
