To think 20 degrees is not ‘like an oven’?

TimeAtTheBar · 28/09/2022 08:31

It was c16 degrees in the front room this morning so I ‘boosted’ the heating for 15 mins to 20 degrees. The front room keeps it’s heat in very well with the doors shut so it only needed a boost.

DH has walked in the room and declared it is like an oven, he’s too hot, I’m wasting good money, it’s still only September and ‘we’ decided not to put the heating on until November at least (‘we’ decided no such thing).

AIBU to think that 20 degrees is a perfectly normal ambient temperature to be comfortable in my own front room? I’m recovering from flu and resting on doctors orders so I’m not moving around much, I have a jumper, fluffy socks and a blanket and I’m quite cosy thank you very much.

I won’t mention the fact that he walked out leaving the door open. I might boost the heating again just to spite him.

IABU - there’s a cost of living crisis, put another jumper on

IANBU - it’s cold and I’m illing and 15mins worth of heating has cost about 25p so suck it up

20 degrees is excessive imo

16 isn't that cold !

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/09/2022 08:46

Ooft, too cold for me! If you can afford it, sod him, whack up that heating you need to recuperate!

Fullsomefrenchie · 28/09/2022 08:47

I’d still be chilly at 20 and 16 would be Baltic for me.

ChicagoCubsFan · 28/09/2022 08:48

I like to be warm. In winter our living areas are 22/23 so 20 wouldn’t be like an oven. We have the heating on when we’re cold, if that was in August, so be it.

If you’re struggling, maybe he’s just worried. But you’re not well and I’d have told my partner to piss off. He wouldn’t act like that though as he’s not a dick.

Natsku · 28/09/2022 08:49

20 is just about starting to get comfortable, 16 is far too cold for indoor temperatures, not good for the house or you. And you're ill so especially important to keep warmer and you're already doing all the jumper blankets etc.

mountainsunsets · 28/09/2022 08:49

20 would be far too hot for me.

We never set the heating above 18.5 degrees.

luxxlisbon · 28/09/2022 08:49

20 degrees is excessive!! 😂 some people like to live a miserable existence.

Our thermostat has only dropped to 18 at the minute and it does feel chilly in the morning particularly!

If you’re cold, specially if you are sick and can afford your heating then why sit in the cold?

3WildOnes · 28/09/2022 08:50

I'm happiest at 21. At 16 I feel really cold.

FlorettaB · 28/09/2022 08:51

Sticking the heating on for 15 minutes when you’re ill is totally reasonable.

Ponoka7 · 28/09/2022 08:52

For someone recovering from flu and not moving around much around 22 would be recommended. So it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. It would cost more in antibiotics if you developed a chest infection. We need to not breathe in cold air when we are vulnerable, Ill, a child, elderly etc. He doesn't get to dictate this.

Deliaskis · 28/09/2022 08:52

20 degrees is the actual definition of room temperature in the dictionary, so really isn't excessive at all! My comfort level is about 21 degrees really, but I am trying to learn to live with 19-20. We are all different and some feel the cold differently, and it really does depend on what you are doing.

Like you though, I'd be cross at him leaving the door open, retaining heat is just as important as not creating too much of it.

But either way, YANBU at all.

Peridot1 · 28/09/2022 08:53

I generally find 18 too cold but 20 a bit hot. Boosting to 20 and then putting it back down to maybe 18 seems sensible. Here DH would say it’s like an oven at 20. He’s still wearing shorts and T-shirts.

@ChicagoCubsFan - that’s bonkers. Nobody needs it that warm surely?

LittleBearPad · 28/09/2022 08:53

Boost away!

TimeAtTheBar · 28/09/2022 08:53

He’s just brought me coffee and a thicker blanket while repeating his ‘oven’ statement.

I’m eyeing up the shovel/patio.

20 is too much for me. It’s 16 here atm, it’s fine.

NoSquirrels · 28/09/2022 08:54

Regardless of whether it might be usually unreasonable to boost your heating in September during an extreme cost of living hike, you’re recovering from a respiratory illness, so that’s not usual rules!

RewildingAmbridge · 28/09/2022 08:55

Does fifteen minutes raise the room temperature by 4 degrees?! Mine definitely wouldn't, stick it on for an hour or so and tell him to sod off

sevenbyseven · 28/09/2022 08:55

I think it's unlikely the heating rose by 4 degrees in 15 minutes! I'm guessing you set the thermostat to 20 for 15 minutes which did boost the heat but not by that much.

Whether you're unreasonable partly depends on whether you can afford it or not.

midgetastic · 28/09/2022 08:56

Generally speaking for health 16 is too cold - but anything over 18 should be ok - can that be a compromise ? ( depending how strapped for cash you are )

However different people feel heat differently- if you feel cold movement is a great idea

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 28/09/2022 08:57

Get a duvet rather than a blanket and a hot water bottle 16c is fine generally but you will feel colder if unwell

Ha ha ha!!!!
😂

galacticpixels · 28/09/2022 08:58

I think when you're ill, you feel the cold a lot more. I don't think it's unreasonable to make the room cosy while you're poorly, it's not like you had it on for hours.

BrownOrangeRed · 28/09/2022 09:01

20°c is too hot. Our house gets down to below 10°c when it's really cold outside and we put the heating up to 16

TimeAtTheBar · 28/09/2022 09:02

It’s definitely raised the temperature; whether it’s actually 20 degrees I’m not sure, the thermostat is in the hall so it might be even warmer in here.

Our heating system is pretty impressive tbf, we’ve never had to have it on for long. Also we have solar panels so the gas bill is pretty low for the size of house. And we’re not skint.

We both have access to the controls on our phones so this could be an ongoing war this winter 🤣
