Friend forced to sign a waiver agreeing to diet by wedding dress shop

Shocked. My friend has ordered a very expensive wedding dress from a well-known designer.... she went to be measured this week and was told that because she was "in between" sizes she would either have to pay £450 extra to have it made to her exact size or sign a waiver agreeing to lose around a stone before her final fitting, which is four months before her actual wedding next June. Is this normal? I think it's horrifying and toxic!

There are too many cheeky fuckers who think they have zero obligation to buy the dress they ordered a size too small and subsequently can't fit into because they are not afraid of the fridge light.

Not afraid of the fridge light 😂😂😂

I work in bridal alterations sometimes and I see the "I'll slim into it" happen far too often. It never happens.
If she's had to sign to say it's her problem if the dress doesn't fit them fair play to the shop.

PeachyPeachTrees · 29/09/2022 14:54

I used to work in a bridal shop and loads of B2B would buy too small and then not loose weight and dress not fit. Not the shop's fault. They carry all sizes and do alterations. The shop need to cover themselves or they'll be out of business.

but in the same time, if the customer really loose some weight and the dress doesn't fit anyway, it isn't fair to the customer either..
Not fair? How do you suggest the shop "be fair" to a customer buying a dress that doesn't actually fit, and insisting that she's going to be a totally different shape in a couple of months?

In this case it starts with the designer designing their dresses in so stupid way that they can't dress her without extraorbitant alteration fees and dumb excuse of her being "between the sizes" (not over the sizes, just between).

It isn't customer's dream, it is something presented as a viable option by the shop with a simple condition (loose one stone). The dress designer should be the proffesional here. If the best they can offer to the bride is a bet (loose weight and get dress at normal price, means saving 500£), they should bet too (free adjustments if she does loose the weight agreed, but it doesn't work with the dress).

hugefanofcheese · 30/09/2022 07:04

??

If the customer knows she isn't the weight she would like to be when she goes dress shopping she has options such as to wait until nearer the time. Alternatively, she could purchase a more easily altered style in her current size I.e. a simple silk shift dress with no intricate boning, beading or lace panels.

It is entirely the customer's decision to choose a dress that does not fit outside the time of purchase (beyond normal tweaks).

Either way, the point stands that it isn't easy to increase the size of most dresses as the shop is saying.

I'm not sure why you think the seller owes her a backup? It's business, not a public service.

@MotherofGoats, the bridal shop needs to do this because weight fluctuates. They're trying to accommodate your friend, while also getting her a dress that fits. It sounds bad, but it isn't. The could built the dress to her measurements and then have it not fit, but that wouldn't do her any good. So what they are saying is that they want to and will serve her, but she needs to put some skin in the game and agree to either lose some weight or pay to have it made to her EXACT SIZE (which is never recommended) because otherwise the dress won't fit! There's nothing wrong with this! When you're getting something made to your EXACT CURRENT MEASUREMENTS, but you won't be wearing that item for many months, you run the risk of the item not fitting and there being problems! Asking her to either lose weight or pay extra is fine. Normally, they make wedding dresses slightly bigger so they can alter them. If your friend is requesting something different, that could have also factored into their decision. They don't want to get burned with a bride not paying because the dress doesn't fit her the same anymore.

Back in my bridesmaid days I tried on dresses for size. One was too big, the other I got on but was a little too tight to zip all the way. The woman ( who was quite nasty, like most bridal shop workers for some reason?) Said she'd order the bigger one. I said no, I'll take the smaller, if I lose 3-5# it'll fit. She chuckled, looked me up & down & said " you won't be losing anything" I was between a 6 & 8 US. My mom was like "yes, she WILL. ORDER THE 6" She made a face & reluctantly wrote the ticket. Real Nasty B#$*h. The dress comes in & I go there. Same woman. Tells me to come get fitted. I'm like no. Im just taking the dress. Her: You NEED to be fitted. Me: No, ring up the dress. Her: I'm not giving it to you without being fitted. Me: It's my dress, you can't keep it from me. So ring it up. NOW. So she saw I was not to be played with, & I left with my dress. Went to my seamstress, (yes I lost the #'s) & paid $10 to hem it. At the wedding I found out they pushed all the other girls (,including the bride) to order sizes too big, & then rocked the he!! Out of them with alterations! The dress was $115. One girl payed $80 in alterations!!! Might not seem like a lot now but back then as a 90's 20something!! It was A LOT. That nasty C U Next Tues (Along with ALOT of bridal shops) was scamming people left & right! But not THIS GIRL!!!!

Confusion101 · 02/10/2022 09:10

@Bikerchick69 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 cool story bro 🤣🤣🤣 it's not a scam. You are the exception, not the rule to the "I will lose the lbs" and actually did lose them. And also, if you didn't, what would have happened your dress? You can't add in material, you can always take it away!

Hearthnhome · 02/10/2022 09:47

Fuck me @Bikerchick69 is this the same day you went behind the counter and better your own KFC?

DillonPanthersTexas · 02/10/2022 10:45

That reads like a dog has just shat out the bag of Scrabble tiles it ate the precious day.

Unless you're buying completely off the peg is it not quite standard to have the shop you get your wedding dress from alter it to fit you perfectly (which does cost, of course it does). The waiver seems a bit silly as it's 'lose x amount of weight...,or wait?' - it's not really the shop's problem either way you either buy a dress that fits / wear it anyway whether it fits or not and if you want to buy a dress that's too small that's really on you, or you pay to have a dress tailored to fit you.

The waiver basically puts into writing what you have just said. It's just covering their arses that if you buy the dress in the smaller size, it is yours and you are keeping it regardless. There is no way in hell the shop told her in writing to lose weight and got her to sign it

MotherofGoats · 27/09/2022 13:52

She was expecting to have to pay £200 for alterations but the shop are saying because she's in between sizes she needs to pay £450 for an inbetween size. Surely the point about going to a bridal designer is that your dress is made to measure? Or am I just old-fashioned....

@MotherofGoats

You are being ridiculous - presumably you know this and are just being click baity

But just in case -

You don’t get a made to measure dress unless you pay for one.

Your friend is opting for a standard size dress with some alternations because it’s cheaper.

Because she is sitting between two sizes, the shop is telling her they cannot be altered to fit, so either she pays extra for made to measure, or she looses or gains weight.

She is not signing a waiver to say she’ll lose a stone, she is a signing a waiver to say she understands that she needs to lose a stone or the dress she has chosen won’t fit.

This is because the shop has been burned by brides who say they will lose weight, don’t, and then don’t want to pay for the dress, which costs the shop money.

Your friend has two choices - pick a different style off the peg dress that can just be slightly altered to fit, or lose or gain weight.

Bikerchick69 · 02/10/2022 14:44

It was a SCAM. Like I said, it was only a few #s so that it could be zipped. They were PURPOSELY ORDERING BIGGER DRESSES. The brides was so big it didn't even fit her right once they altered it. It was gapping all over & the whole symmetry was off. Alterations that cost 3/4 of what the dress costs is a SCAM

Bikerchick69 · 02/10/2022 14:46

It’s obviously just a waiver to say they won’t be liable for any extra re sizing needed if she doesn’t shrink to the size she has bought…

Stewball · 07/10/2022 13:59

Either order the bigger one or go elsewhere.

This picture seems to fit without me going elsewhere. 😕
