To not like the atmosphere in Aldi?

Can’t quite put my finger on it but there is something I find a-bit off putting. I went the other day and I really wanted to like it but there was a chaotic atmosphere and the people were so loud. I’m aware I don’t have to shop there but wondering if anyone else has encountered this?

I was in Aldi yesterday and it was grim because the students had just arrived and were all doing their shopping at once, but normally I like Aldi and Waitrose best because they are both quite compact without endless aisles of different brands of the same product like you get in the big supermarkets.

Zippedydoo123 · 26/09/2022 15:00

I went in our local Aldi the other week and it was truly gross. I hadn't been in months as I find Asda cheaper. It felt like a jumble sale with too many people in it. Awful.

AclowncalledAlice · 26/09/2022 15:47

I don't like either Aldi or Lidl. I just feel like people don't have any patience there so browsing is out. Then there are the tills....god I hate them.

BooseysMom · 26/09/2022 16:15

The last supermarket I was in which felt disorganised, chaotic and "shouty" was an M&S food Hall

Our M&S is mostly calm..the only time I remember it was manic was during the pandemic when people were trying so hard to keep their distance from each other but failing completely as they all wanted to get to the same thing at once!

Local Morissons is horrendous and I only shop there if i have no choice.

I absolutely hate Lidl and Aldi. Remind me of some Eastern Bloc supermarket circa 1984

You were queuing all the way down the street then not knowing what they even had for sale? I don't think so.

Atmywitsend29 · 26/09/2022 16:20

My local Aldi is always always freezing. No matter what time of year it is, no matter what the weather is doing, it's bitterly cold. I hate it. No other store is that cold. Even in the summer when we had 36degrees outside I had to take a cardigan to Aldi.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 26/09/2022 16:30

Who do you work for @Beansandvodka Morrisons? Tesco? Asda? Sainsburys? Waitrose? Co-Op?

It's ONE of the main stores anyway... Wink One of these threads pops up month or so bashing Aldi. No-one ever does it about any other store. (Maybe Lidl occasionally.)

You're not going to put us off going you know. Lower YOUR prices if you want more of our custom. Wink

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 26/09/2022 16:30

*EVERY month or so.

No good it being hot in there. Some of the food would go off!

nonelynov · 26/09/2022 16:35

Something nice happens in our Aldi. Yes, the till system is a nightmare but staff are timed by management on how fast they get things through. I feel sorry for the staff really.

Without fail, however, if I've ever had only a few items to get through the checkout till compared to the customer in front of me, that person always asks if I'd like to go in front of them. It's lovely and generous in spirit and somewhat mitigates the robotic fast processing that checkout staff and customers have to put up with.

It's never happened in any other large supermarkets.

I think it's so variable and store dependent. Our local Aldi is lovely but the Lidl is awful. I've seen people on this thread say their local ones are the other way round.

I actually find Waitrose horrendous to shop in. Rude, obnoxious old people barging around with their trolleys and it's ridiculously busy in our local one. I'd rather go to Aldi, genuinely.

This. ^ Waitrose is vile. Contains many of the most unpleasant and obnoxious people in society. And it's overpriced, overrated, boring, has poor ranges of stock, and has no better quality food than Aldi/Sainsburys/Morrisons... I only ever go in there for a newspaper, or some toffees when Morrisons hasn't got any in.

Makes me hoot with laughter when people start these dumb threads claiming ALDI is shit, and then a bunch of people hop on to agree. LOL don't go then.. go somewhere else! Yeah I am fully aware I pop into Waitrose 4 or 5 times a YEAR for something I can't get in my local market town supermarket (Morrisons,) or for a newspaper, but then I don't start ridiculous threads bashing Waitrose !!! So fucking ridiculous! As I say, it's ALWAYS Aldi. Never see anyone start a thread bashing ANY other store. I wonder why??????????????????? 😲

It's so obvious the OP works for another store, who are butthurt at Aldi's success and popularity. 😂

And no I DON'T work for Aldi. I just find these threads CONSTANTLY posted on here (bashing Aldi) utterly pathetic.

girlfriend44 · 26/09/2022 16:42

First World problems eh.

If you don't like it don't go in there simple.

Mojoj · 26/09/2022 16:48

Ha ha ha ha. This post cracked me up. As if Aldi is full of customers shouting at one another🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. It's a supermarket. You go in, get what you need and leave. That's how it works. And just for the record, the staff in my local Aldi's could not be any nicer.

Starsinyoureyes13 · 26/09/2022 16:49

Aldi sourse local produce, with that it helps out your local farmers, the low cost of items is passed onto the staff who are better paid than the asdas and Morrisons of this world, they also aren't outsourcing their workers with beep beep self checkouts that break down non stop, and I love the randomness of the middle aisles..
Don't be so snobby, all welcome at aldis

VioletInsolence · 26/09/2022 17:26

It’s very quiet during the day….Sunday is a bit chaotic. They’re not full of poor people either….they’re full of sensible people who don’t want to pay loads more for the same product.

Chloefairydust · 26/09/2022 17:37

I hate how your rushed at the check out, you have to race to bag all your items, it’s a lot of pressure lol. I don’t like the stressful atmosphere, I don’t shop there regularly, and in all honesty I’m not sure it really works out that much cheaper than other supermarkets anyway

CPL593H · 26/09/2022 17:37

A few years ago, a couple of days before Christmas I was in an M&S food hall.It was like something out of Dante's Inferno, huge jostling queues and some very unfortunate behaviour involving Brussel sprouts. They hadn't got what I wanted so off to Lidl. It was a paradise by comparison, staff floating around with freebie stollen and mince pies, good humoured atmosphere (and they had what I wanted)

It all varies a lot.

Sh05 · 26/09/2022 17:40

I definitely prefer Aldi and Lidl to other supermarkets. There's no music or radio playing, means you can shop in peace and generally I don't need a shopping list as there's no distractions to make you forget what you need.
Very few temptations at the till as well.
Each to their own I suppose

mathanxiety · 26/09/2022 17:49

I love it. The basic, no frills style really appeals to me, and it cheers me up no end to know that I'm paying a third less than I would elsewhere. I love the big trolleys and the packing bench.

I'm in the US where Aldis are 'Aldi Sud'. People are generally polite and friendly, and cashiers are brisk and efficient. They open up extra lanes if the lines get long. Cashiers tend to speak both Spanish and English, and seem to be able to deal with price queries without having to wait for a manager. You can be in and out fast. Nice wine and German beer selection. What's not to love...

Yes, so is the one I use. Today I had on a waterproof fleece lined jacket and I was still really cold all the way round. In the summer when it was very hot, I always wore a cardigan when I shopped there.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 26/09/2022 18:17

I don't like the atmosphere in our local Aldi. Haven't ventured there for months.
Customers get quite angry at the checkout for some reason. Probably they don't realise that you're meant to swiftly remove your purchases and bag them up at the shelf.

It's a very bright store and you seem to need to move quickly.
You can't just stand at the, say, lamb section and ponder whether to by steaks or chops

It's like 'move, move, move.'

The staff always seem tense.

Agree completely

worriedatthistime · 26/09/2022 18:35

My aldi is lovely as far as supermarkets go, its a supermarket though not a spa day

Sestriere · 26/09/2022 18:42

Not all ALDIs are equal, just like not all Morrisons are. Ive been in some delightful ones and some where I was scared of catching anyones eye.

urgen · 26/09/2022 14:17

We have an Aldi and I go once a month for the dupe Jo Malone diffusers. Yes, its definitely got a cheap vibe. I know old people dont go in because they are rushed through.

The food and some of the products are pretty much rubbish. If their products were that good there would be no M&S or Waitrose.

Yes all the food is awful Hmm
It's just food. Like any supermarket some is good, some isn't to someone's taste
If the food was that bad I'm pretty sure they would be closing down left right and centre
