To not like the atmosphere in Aldi?

Can’t quite put my finger on it but there is something I find a-bit off putting. I went the other day and I really wanted to like it but there was a chaotic atmosphere and the people were so loud. I’m aware I don’t have to shop there but wondering if anyone else has encountered this?

I like our local Aldi, nice wide aisles, unlike the small Tesco that is just along the high street and always seems to be clogged with roll cages full of stock. Aldi has also recently added self service tills, so the scary fast check out experience is no more.

PuppyMonkey · 26/09/2022 12:59

You feel as if you need to get round the shop, get what you need and get out immediately.

This is why I like it.Grin

I think I sort of get this, especially when Aldi/Netto/Lidl first opened - it was all a bit bargain basement, and then chuck it on the conveyor belt and pack quickly/pay quickly.

I did get almost intimidated by certain customers too, who seemed to think maybe as I looked better dressed (?!) that they could push in front of me or grab the last item on the shelf ahead of me! I soon learned that my money was as good as everyone else's but if I wanted M&S/Waitrose then I could shop there but equally if I wanted Aldi I could shop there too.

KalaniM · 26/09/2022 13:01

I can’t shop in our local Lidl ,Op, I feel what you’re saying! Everything looks unappetising, it’s so higgledy piggery , the whole vibe is rushed and uncared for. Customers seem rushed and tense. In Waitrose a few doors down, everyone is more relaxed, chattier and there’s more much room in the aisles. I’d rather shop Waitrose Essentials than drudge around the chaotic Lidl. Our local Tesco is ultra cramped and doesn’t feel clean. Staff cuts really do make an impact.

Bluevelvetsofa · 26/09/2022 13:01

Our local Aldi is fine. The aisles are wide enough, the staff are fine too. I don’t go to the supermarket to have a shopping experience. I go to get food for the week. Lidl opposite is very different and not in a good way. Tesco always feels grubby, Tesco Express is deeply unpleasant and I loathe Asda and the Morrisons that’s most local.

Me too. I like not having to look at 25 brands of tinned tomatoes or 50 brands of cereal.
This morning a weeks shop plus travel took me 45 minutes.

pointythings · 26/09/2022 13:04

I don't think you can judge all branches of Aldi based on one. The two I got to regularly are fine - friendly and helpful staff, perfectly normal atmosphere and good products. It's a grocery shop, not a leisure experience.

Vampirethriller · 26/09/2022 13:05

There's two near me- one city centre that's always full of students and too busy and one further out that's great, especially on a Monday morning when you can have it nearly to yourself. Never had an issue.

Good grief.

Indeed!

Oh, mate...😂

Rwealere · 26/09/2022 13:11

Not like any I’ve shopped at. Does however sound like an Asda that I sometimes shop at.

StJeanDeVence · 26/09/2022 13:13

I must have been doing supermarket shopping wrong all these years, because that's how I feel regardless of whether it's Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose or M&S.

I mean, what else is one supposed to do in a supermarket? Hang out by the loo rolls soaking up the good vibes?

user1487194234 · 26/09/2022 13:14

I don’t like Lidl or Aldi so I don’t shop in theo
Apart from anything else I find it impossible to do a full shop, and I don’t have time to go round other shops

Canoewoman · 26/09/2022 13:20

Most of the staff on my local Aldi are rude and really loud!
I agree about the chaotic atmosphere . I do however shop there quite a lot and really like some of their products and their wine.

pastaandpesto · 26/09/2022 13:20

Totally depends on the store.

My nearest Aldi is in an extremely deprived area. The store is quite new, well laid out, well stocked, pleasant to shop in.

I occasionally go to another Aldi in a much, much more affluent area. The store is older and really run down, and just has a horrible vibe. I avoid it where I can. (Interestingly it is right next door to a Waitrose which is also very disappointing by Waitrose standards).

Dixiechickonhols · 26/09/2022 13:22

Ours is lovely it’s just been done up, doors on fridges. Wide aisles. Went to Aldi in Florida and it was much more budget feel than ours although prices much higher.

savethebeesandthecees · 26/09/2022 13:24

Some post this.

i shop mostly at Aldi, less keen on Lidl but in my local town Tesco has the most depressing feel to it. Misery stalks the aisles.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/09/2022 12:30

Maybe it's just your local one.

Yes. There are two I use regularly and they're both fine.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/09/2022 13:27

The nearest Waitrose to me (about 10 miles away) has blue lights in the toilets to deter customers from shooting up. Classy!

oakleaffy · 26/09/2022 13:27

Our Whippet thinks Aldi is marvellous... as do all the lucky hounds who have the Aldi Donut dog bed to sleep in...Waitrose never sell such things.

The lighting and stuff in Aldi is harsh, I love Waitrose as it feels ''Safe'', but needs must when the Devil drives.

womaninatightspot · 26/09/2022 13:28

There was an Aldi close to an old flat of mine and it was awful to be in. Lighting was terrible and echoey I found it really unpleasant to be in there. It’s like it was deliberately designed to be as unpleasant as possible. Most of them aren’t like that though. My closest one now is perfectly nice.

TwoWrightFeet · 26/09/2022 13:30

Every time I’ve been in an Aldi I’m reminded why I prefer Waitrose.

IV drug users in Waitrose?! Whatever next! Drug use has no class barriers, but likely that street people come in to inject.

CottonSock · 26/09/2022 13:33

My local one has grumpy staff and narrow crowded aisles. I'll use it if they start delivering. I think I saw something about click and collect happening.
