Black Monday anyone? The tories should be in jail

The pound is now at its lowest point against the dollar since decimalisation in 1971 at 1.03. It’s probably going lower and the Bank of England will likely need to step in with an emergency interest rate rise today. Black Monday possibly?

All because of the mini budget on Friday. The Tories should be in jail. Especially if their rich backers were shorting the pound as it appears to get rich.

I wonder if there will be masses of people protesting outside the Tory conference and if there are, will any Tory MP’s take any notice?
I heard there were protest rallies in 10 cities today but haven’t seen anything on the news?

Zonder · 01/10/2022 21:47

Well Steve Bray is heading up there.

This government is an absolute shitshow and making me (almost…) nostalgic for Boris. (I’m not a Tory, before anyone jumps on me).

In more positive news, this petition calling for an immediate election is doing well - 350k signatures and counting: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/619781

There is also a petition about bringing Truss and KK to account through the law.

Can Truss and Kwarteng be prosecuted for Misconduct in Public Office

I hope this share token works. How can they be so blatant about insider trading? He should be sent to prison.

Britannia Unhinged. Liz is being Very Clear on bbc1 with Laura Kuenssberg. Laura doing well; Liz as well as can be expected. God it's depressing.

Zonder · 02/10/2022 08:50

Still behind a paywall @User98866 but I read about this on twitter. How are they not in serious legal trouble? They should be arrested. I don't understand why they are above the law.

notprincehamlet · 02/10/2022 08:55

Was about to post about The Times article linked above: Kwasi Kwarteng attended a private champagne reception hours after delivering his mini-budget where hedge fund managers who would gain from a crash in the pound egged him on to commit to his plans.

Zonder · 02/10/2022 09:05

It's similar here in the guardian not behind a paywall.

Lonelycrab · 02/10/2022 09:11

Mail are reporting it too. Won’t link to it, feel grubby enough just going to their site from time to time…

newnamethanks · 02/10/2022 09:29

This is what Johnson gave them. Ignore the rules, there are no consequences for People Like Us, fuck em and line your pockets at public expense, that's what taxes are for. Fill your boots. Get more wallpaper. Bunch of asterisks.

newnamethanks · 02/10/2022 15:37

And, hurrah, Rees Mogg's business partner just handed an effing peerage. Heigh ho. What a surprise. Looking forward to the whole Johnson family sitting in the Lords, not just Bozo's brother, shame to let all those perks go to waste.

This is exactly right.

EstellaRijnveld · 02/10/2022 21:56

The tories know they probably won't get re-elected so they're deliberately wrecking the economy & lining their pockets. They'll then spend years in opposition blaming the next government for the damage they caused. Immoral parasites, the whole lot of them.

Dave20 · 03/10/2022 17:10

I don’t think the conservatives will win again at the next GE, but I don’t think Labour will get a majority win. Maybe a coalition?
Only guessing of course.

Dave20 · 03/10/2022 17:12

But yes I agree they know they’re out. Generally, governments have a life span. People want a change after while.
Having the same party in power for too long isn’t a good thing, they become unpopular in the end and run out of new ideas.

They also run out of decent MPs willing to be leaders!

Zonder · 03/10/2022 21:17

I really hope they are out but I wouldn't bank on it. Goodness knows what else they might pull out of the bag to win over the floating voters.
