Black Monday anyone? The tories should be in jail

The pound is now at its lowest point against the dollar since decimalisation in 1971 at 1.03. It’s probably going lower and the Bank of England will likely need to step in with an emergency interest rate rise today. Black Monday possibly?

All because of the mini budget on Friday. The Tories should be in jail. Especially if their rich backers were shorting the pound as it appears to get rich.

Unison is balloting shortly for strike action, she'll vote YES to strike, the Govt don't care about the NHS, so why should she carry that particular can, so the super rich get a pay rise?

They are not getting a pay rise. They are keeping more of their earnings.

I think most of us are past caring about the NHS by now. It's dire.

Its the same thing, tax/pay rise... i hope nhs go all out, it about time people stopped expecting the poor to prop them up up when they are ill.

Maybe we should all encourage anyone who works in the NHS to move abroad/do something more worthwhile if we are all past caring?

Hepwo · 26/09/2022 20:58

Maybe you should stop laughing and actually apply your brain. Or don’t you understand inflation at all?

The original report quoted a TAX INCREASE.

Inflation will make your pay buy less but that's not a tax increase.

Just carry on with the insults though, shouting about misleading bullshit.
It's worked hasn't it, it's wound you up to the point that you a spitting insults despite a tax cut.

Left wing lunatics.

BirmaBrite · 26/09/2022 21:00

Are they though ? are they excempt from inflation and interest rate rises ? Will they get a better exchange rate when they go on holiday simply because they earn more ? Does their new car cost less ? Are school fees inflation proof ? Are there special pumps at the petrol station for rich people ? A better rate for gas and electricity if you are in the top 1% ? It's a different world to the other 99% so maybe all these things are true ?

It would have been better to increase the thresholds as well.

As the value of the thresholds decrease with inflation.

Otherwise why increase thresholds at all? Maybe they should stay the same forever?

Oh, the irony! 😂😂

midgetastic · 26/09/2022 21:03

A £7 tax cut isn't enough to make me swing from the rafters

For most people the cut is more than wiped out by the resulting inflation

The US dollar is making the price of petrol more expensive than it should be and is linked to the gas price as well.

So inflation is only going one way....

Why are 43% of people not paying income tax?

@Coucous does this include students and pensioners or is that 43% of working age adults?

i can’t believe how many people on here seriously think Tories have done this to benefit themselves and their friends

I really can't see any other reasoning that makes sense of what they've done.

BirmaBrite · 26/09/2022 21:09

Failing at multi tasking 'the are they though' should have been 'are the rich though' !

midgetastic · 26/09/2022 21:15

Exactly cake

BirmaBrite · 26/09/2022 21:47

Have to admit I did wonder about the insider trading rumours. I am sure no Chancellor or indeed any cabinet members, would stoop to that level, regardless of how much money it might make him.

EstellaRijnveld · 26/09/2022 21:56

@BirmaBrite Nothing would surprise me with this lot and yes I do believe they would stoop that low. Remember, that some members of this cabinet knew about the lockdown parties. They either joined in with breaking the covid rules or they kept quiet.

the80sweregreat · 26/09/2022 22:02

No Wonder the new chancellor was laughing like a drain last Monday , I wonder his much money he made today ?..
I doubt we will ever know.

According to the BBC the £ was the lowest against the $ since 1792 this morning. Lowest for 230 years.

Jesus Christ that doesn’t bode well.

I see the same old benefits claimants on here fighting for more for doing nothing day in and day out on here...

Not looking at anyone in particular.

I should hope not. How do you know who's a benefit claimant? Are you referring to Universal Credit or other benefits?

Thelnebriati · 26/09/2022 22:20

Blimey. The £ has tanked and Kissingfrogs25 pops up to distract everyone with their Mumsnet Benefits Claimant Spreadsheet.

I had a quick look on the Halifax site earlier on and saw absolutely no evidence of that

I think you might mean 1972? It’s still an incredible low but surely not one that stretches back to the birth of the dollar

They said 1792 on the 10.00 News.

I reckon they are locking us in steerage to give the Tory donors rich the chance to evacuate move their money somewhere safe.

And somewhere a band is striking up..
