To go to A&E? I’m desperate.

Early hours of Saturday morning (48 hours ago) I woke with the worst stomach cramps. I’ve been pooing liquid ever since, over 50 times a day. I can’t keep anything in. I haven’t been sick but I feel sick. It’s getting no better, the stomach cramps are indescribable, I can’t even lie down they’re so awful. I feel like death and I’m scared of dehydration. Do I call 111? Go to A&E? DH meant to be away in London for work tomorrow and I have 2 young kids by myself. I need help.

God this sounds rough, poor you. I would assume your holiday is off the cards at this point; I’m sorry :(

GobbolinoTheWitchesCat · 28/09/2022 12:12

Also apple is far too acidic to start off eating with.

When you do start eating, keep to light, plain, easy to digest foods.

White carbs, not wholemeal.

Try a little jacket or mashed potato (no skin). Could graduate up to plain cooked chicken, then maybe a little cheese. You get the idea.

You might need nutritional drinks prescribed.

How much and what are you drinking? I'm concerned if you're still only managing sips of water...

JustDanceAddict · 28/09/2022 12:18

I would eat what you are supposed to eat when prepping for a colonoscopy as it’ll be easy on the bowel.
white bread/pasta/rice
plain chicken or fish
no fruit or veg
Potato w no skin
egg
then graduate up to low fat dairy if you tolerate the above
basically nothing fibrous
water and plain drinks
good luck. Hope you feel better v soon

As a doctor, I think these threads should be banned. It isn't safe to ask for medical advice from a bunch of unqualified strangers, who are not able to assess you. Doctors won't give medical advice, as we are forbidden from doing so over social media (for good reason).

KeepingTheWormsQuiet · 28/09/2022 12:25

I agree with BelleMarionette. All this contradictory advice could be dangerous.

I'm not a doctor, but I used to be a Citizens Advice advisor and the terrible advice given on Mumsnet could cause people even more problems.

Well if you read these threads you will have gleaned that the majority of posters advice is seek professional help. And if you're a doctor you'll be quite aware how difficult it is to see your GP and are expecting pharmacies to pickup the slack anyway

sazzy5 · 28/09/2022 13:23

I wouldn’t want to go on holiday feeling like that. I would speak to your GP and try and get your results back.

Havanawinter · 28/09/2022 13:26

I was trying to loosely follow the BRAT diet but subbed the bread for the wrap as we don’t have any bread. I can’t call the surgery for results until after 2 (their rules) so will call in a while. Just feeling lousy. I didn’t mean to offend the doctor on here, I wasn’t looking for medical advice with my most recent post, more lamenting my shit (very punny) situation. I’m still only able to drink water or very weak squash.

My kids have been so excited about this holiday and I can’t bear the thought of letting them down.

Sounds like c-diff to me. Have you had a lot of antibiotics for other things lately? You might still be OK for Saturday - who knows. Chase up your stool sample results. Beige food only. Chicken, rice, yoghurt etc. Definately not acidic apples!

OP has been to a&e, and probably can't get an appointment to see a doctor - like what seems to be most people these days. Not me but I've got cancer so I pretty much have a hotline. All well and good you wanting them banned but when we can't get to see a GP.....................

Havanawinter · 28/09/2022 13:29

@silverclock222 yes I’ve had 2 courses in the last month, one for tonsillitis and one for an infected wisdom tooth. It really hasn’t been a good time health-wise. I had covid 3 months ago and have been ill constantly since with one thing or another.

Anyone can say they're a doctor on here. Or a paramedic, specialist nurse, brain surgeon, whatever. On the AIBU board you don't even get the pinned warning at the top of the page. This would need to be taken up on Site Stuff. Just saying.

I don't know if you were around for it, @KeepingTheWormsQuiet, but we had someone a couple of months ago posing as a 'DWP decision maker for PIP', giving out the most trolly shit advice one night. Managed to get that one taken down quite quickly, fortunately.

AutumnCrow · 28/09/2022 15:07

This is the pinned message on every thread on the General Health board:

Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. If you have medical concerns, please seek medical attention; if you think your problem could be acute, do so immediately. Even qualified doctors can't diagnose over the internet, so do bear that in mind when seeking or giving advice.

So concerned posters could ask for posts to be moved from AIBU to General Health, as a first step; and/or repeat this advice.

GobbolinoTheWitchesCat · 28/09/2022 15:17

@Havanawinter I hope you can get hold of your gp but in your shoes I'd go one further and call the gastro ward at your hospital. As you're so recently discharged they might be able to do much more to help.

It's who you'd call if you were having problems post scope and you really need proper advice.

Try and manage some diarolyte if you can, to replenish your body after your latest bouts of diarrhoea.

mathanxiety · 28/09/2022 21:33

@Havanawinter

Stop drinking diluted squash. It doesn't do anything to help your electrolyte balance, which is what you need to address.

Drink Dioralyte only.

Eat white bread, plain crackers, white rice only if you can manage eating.

buttons123456 · 28/09/2022 21:51

Blimey, hope you are ok op!

Turtletotem · 28/09/2022 22:23

I hope you're feeling a lot better than you were. My guess as a non doctor would be c-diff...

WagathaChristieMystery · 28/09/2022 23:03

Hope you’re able to see a doctor soon and get your results soon OP!

OutdoorHousePlant · 28/09/2022 23:25

Some faecal results can take up to 5 days to grow, so you might have some wait yet for results.

whynotwhatknot · 29/09/2022 00:30

i wouldnt go away op is it abroad -your insurance might cover you if you get a medical note

Superhanz · 29/09/2022 01:04

I'm a nurse and some of the advice given on here is downright scary! If you haven't gone more than 20 minutes without a bowel movement in 48 hours, you're going to be already suffering from quite severe dehydration and loss of electrolytes. If it gets bad enough it can be life threatening. This isn't just standard D&V, and urgent medical attention is needed.

Please don't ask for medical advice on MN. And don't give it either unless you're qualified to do so.

OverArmour · 29/09/2022 02:51

People have discussed medical issues with each other forever. Of course people on here (and everywhere, including IRL) can give dangerous advice, that’s obvious. On many topics.

There are also threads on here where posters have been given bad advice by doctors and by being urged on here to seek a second opinion have had potentially life saving results.

Also, doctor’s appointments are like gold dust now and you need to be feeling pretty robust to run the gauntlet of the 8am phone scrimmage.

Havanawinter · 29/09/2022 03:33

Another night stuck on the toilet. This is night 7 now I think. I think I’m paying for the small glass of OJ I had before bed; I know I know not a smart choice but I fancied it. I’m miserable.

OP posts:
Havanawinter · 29/09/2022 03:39

Also I still can’t get comfy in bed on my sides. I’m usually a side sleeper but whenever I lay on either side within seconds the pain in my stomach is bad and I have to move. I can only sleep propped up on pillows in bed. What’s that all about?

OP posts:
YukoandHiro · 29/09/2022 06:41

OP can you speak to another doctor? Were you given any medication?
