To go to A&E? I’m desperate.

Early hours of Saturday morning (48 hours ago) I woke with the worst stomach cramps. I’ve been pooing liquid ever since, over 50 times a day. I can’t keep anything in. I haven’t been sick but I feel sick. It’s getting no better, the stomach cramps are indescribable, I can’t even lie down they’re so awful. I feel like death and I’m scared of dehydration. Do I call 111? Go to A&E? DH meant to be away in London for work tomorrow and I have 2 young kids by myself. I need help.

Are you feeling any better today @Havanawinter ? If not I think you should go to A&E. You shouldn't have blood in your poo.

I never got a call back from 111.

😡

OldFan · 26/09/2022 12:43

It definitely sounds like some sort of food poisoning to me.

My mum had C.Difficile from undercooked restaurant chicken.

MyDogLucy · 26/09/2022 12:46

This sounds awful, you poor thing. I hope the lack of updates means you have now gone to A&E. Also your husband sounds like a selfish arse. I really hope you're feeling better soon.

IDinnaKen · 26/09/2022 12:49

People on MN need to stop obsessing about wasting NHS time by going to A&E. It puts people off when they should actually go and be seen. Especially the patronising “It’s not an emergency or an accident so why would you go to A&E?”.

Hope you’ve received the correct help/treatment OP.

Oh god, this thread.

A single set of symptoms can sometimes be something not-serious such as food poisoning, or they could be something more serious.

Doctors know how to examine a patient and carry out tests to distinguish between conditions that are or are not serious and requiring further treatment.

When conditions are potentially serious, you get medical help because that's what it's for. Delaying seeking treatment can end up costing the health service more money because the condition could get worse.

Just because it might be food poisoning, doesn't mean the symptoms aren't bad enough to justify OP in getting it checked to see if it's anything else. This severity/duration and with blood in the stools would be red flags. No one is saying you go to A&E if you have the shits for a few hours.

Hopefully OP is off getting treatment.

I agree. Diarrhoea on mumsnet =stay home.

Insect bite with a bit of redness around = go to A&E as it could be tracking/cellulitis/sepsis.

Hope you have been seen OP.

Twonewcats · 26/09/2022 12:50

Sounds grim. Hope things are a little better?

listsandbudgets · 26/09/2022 12:51

I had something like this right at the end of Covid. Horrific stomach pains worse than labour, diarrhoea, projectile vomiting, shivering, nothing stayed down - went on for about 36 hours - then stopped as quickly as it started. I spent a lot of time huddled up in layers on the toilet with a bucket between my knees. Luckily, we have more than one toilet. Grin

I really hope you feel better soon OP. Don't assume it's covid though it could be any number of things.

Spinninggyro · 26/09/2022 13:23

I caught campylobacter from a puppy that was on a raw chicken diet and the symptoms sound much the same. I needed a course of strong antibiotics so it might be worth speaking to your doctor to get a sample tested. I’ve also had Norovirus (one of the perks of being a teacher) similar symptoms.

CottonSock · 26/09/2022 13:26

I read you post and thought it sounded like my campylobacter.
I'm sorry your husband is being a duck when you feel so ill.
When I had it my dh got it two days later and soon realised 'what the fuss was about'.
I hope you are getting medical attention.

Cm078 · 26/09/2022 13:29

Hope you are ok OP?

BettyOBarley · 26/09/2022 13:33

It sounds just like when my dad had campylobacter recently. His GP sent him to A&E as they could do the blood tests that were required. Please get yourself seen OP as you probably need antibiotics.

Don’t use Imodium, let your body flush out the bug

Just what I was going to say . I modicum is great for long standing conditions eg ibs, Chrons etc....but not a bug. The runs is your body trying to get rid of the infection.

Amarette · 26/09/2022 13:43

Hope you're in A&E and getting medical attention.

JustDanceAddict · 26/09/2022 13:45

I hope you’ve been seen by a medic now, sounds horrific.
i have had dodgy guts but nothing like this.

Theonlyoneiknow · 26/09/2022 13:46

Hopefully things have calmed down OP and you're feeling better

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 26/09/2022 14:06

Are you okay OP. I hope you got some help. My husband had food poisoning (we think) a few weeks ago and he said he’d never felt so ill x

RaginaPhalange · 26/09/2022 14:31

I hope you got some help OP, sounds awful.

As for the husband what a dick. I bet its completely different when he's unwell.

Mythreefavouritethings · 26/09/2022 14:32

Hi OP, my DH had the same symptoms you describe a few months back - I would never recommend going by someone else's diagnosis, of course, but he was pooing liquid and felt sick without vomiting, it was found to be campylobacteriosis in the end after days of this. Hope you're OK there.

This is why when I took our new puppy to the vet and said she was raw fed they said ‘we don’t recommend that at all’. Felt so stupid when they explained the risks!

OP hope you’re getting help.

elm26 · 26/09/2022 14:43

Firstly OP, I hope you're in A&E and being treated.

The level of ignorance on here astounds me sometimes.

Never ever tell somebody who's suffering severe diarrhoea and/or sickness to drink as much water as possible, all you're going to do is flush out the salts that your body is trying to hold on to. Small sips of water/diarolyte.

Imodium isn't going to work when the symptoms are this bad.

I've had norovirus, I felt so poorly but I wasn't losing blood or unable to lay down because of pain.

As soon as you start losing blood whilst going to the toilet, you need medical advice. Not the odd smear on tissue where you could have possibly irritated from wiping a lot, but full on blood in your stools is seen as a medical emergency.

Hospitals don't want people in with norovirus because of how it spreads however, if this is a very extreme case of it, the OP will need hydration drips and painkillers.

Personally, I don't think the symptoms match with norovirus and I would be inclined to think you've got food poisoning which can be very dangerous.

Hope you get treated and feel better soon, as for your partner, he sounds like an absolute tosser.

halfbakedkate · 26/09/2022 14:52

This is exactly what our vet told us too! Thank goodness they did as we had no idea.

Op - I hope you are being looked after.

Marvellousmadness · 26/09/2022 15:12

The fact that people would consider going to a&e for violent diarrea baffles me.

Marvellousmadness · 26/09/2022 15:14

Especially when you are well enough to type all these messages on here and even bag out your dh for being useless

GobbolinoTheWitchesCat · 26/09/2022 15:20

The general ignorance and lack of compassion of so many baffles me generally.

With any luck, the op has now been admitted to hospital and will be feeling stronger by the time she comes to read your posts.
