I know I can flip it half way through, but why should I have to, lol.

In the future, people will look at our toasters and our fossilised bread slices and think us savages.

NiteNight · 25/09/2022 19:52

Yeah, it's a well known problem.
If you buy something like a Tesco own brand toaster it'll cope with most UK sliced loaves.
Bigger brand names seem to be aimed at the European market where the sliced loaf seems to be smaller.

I took a bread slice sized piece of paper to put in the toasters to check them when I went shopping.

Ridiculously annoying.

NeelyOHara1 · 25/09/2022 20:02

Thanks for replies. Slices are being upsized and thickened, it seems to me.

My DH was impressed when he saw me toast our bread. Only hovis type ordinary bread, but it doesn’t fit our toaster the way he does it.
I drop it in sideways.
Try it, it could be a game changer.

DuaneDibbley · 25/09/2022 20:05

Yep turn it sideways

ivykaty44 · 25/09/2022 20:06

I just cut bread to fit in toaster, it’s the middle of the loaf that’s more tricky

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 25/09/2022 20:09

So annoying. I have a swanky dualit which is awesome in many ways and has lasted over 10yrs so far but none of the bread I buy fits without a flip - no matter which way I turn it.

Some fit sideways, it's true but I think the hope is we'll get used to over sized bread.

The loaf I bought this week has long thin slices.
It's irritating - the first couple were OK, but not now I'm in the middle of the loaf.
I remembered to flip the slices upside down halfway thru once.

Pixiedust1234 · 25/09/2022 20:11

I thought you were supposed to put the bread in sideways. Reading these posts it seems not Confused

SocksAndTheCity · 25/09/2022 20:15

Bread sideways solves a lot of the problems but thickness is another matter. I bought a cheapo toaster for my office years ago thinking it would do for lunchtime bagels, crumpets and whatnot, only to find that nothing bar standard plastic medium sliced would fit in the bastard.

NeelyOHara1 · 25/09/2022 20:16

@Pixiedust1234 Fitting sideways is no longer a given though.

I never have this problem because I don't own a toaster and make toast under the grill 😂

I'd probably just cut a bit off for it to fit if I did own one.
