AIBU?

Pauper's grave

Not really AIBU, but would appreciate the advice.

A relative of mine died when I was a child, and his next of kin were unable to afford his funeral. He had a paupers funeral and was buried in a paupers grave. There is nobody in the same plot, and he has never been allowed a headstone / memorial.

Is it possible for me to now buy the plot that he is in? It would mean so much to his children.

If you are in the UK you can erect a headstone. Contact the authorities responsible for the cemetery. I know someone who has done this for an ancestor fairly recently.

My maternal grandmother was buried in a paupers' grave. But I believe it was shared with other poor 'paupers'.

I lost my dm recently, so we are hoping to have a little inscription especially for my dgm on my dm's plot. My dm loved her dm deeply, and was always so saddened to think of her beloved mother in a shared paupers' grave.

I know I'm not answering your question OP - unfortunately I don't know the answer - but I hope you are able to honour your relative in the way you wish to. From what you've written, it would seem like there would be no good reason not to allow it.
