AIBU?
Tesco self checkout.
TheOrigRights · 24/09/2022 18:05
I use click and collect for my big shop, but always go in store for a few things I like to pick myself.
It's appalling. Only a couple of tills open, with queues down the aisles.
The queue for the self checkout was half way down the shop.
And Every Fucking Time I use the self checkout you get the same problem.
I stopped pre-weighing my loose fruit because it freaked out. e.g. 3 apples. Scan the bar code. Put the apples on the packing side. Nope. Call assistance. They can never tell you WHY it didn't work, only "don't worry". I'm not worried, I'm frustrated.
So, I now weight at the checkout, only that didn't work today because the scales need calibrating, but I'm not to worry they can do it for me. And off she went for 5 mins.
Then there is ALWAYS the item like a greeting card that is too light. So they have to OK that, but again, I mustn't worry because they can quickly approve it, even though I've been waiting there like a lemon while they deal with all the other tills.
Sainsbury's are better - at least they've programmed it for light items.
I am low on patience at the moment and I'm angry that they've pushed so much service onto customers and the service they want us to use is shit.
Thank you! My 13 yo isn't interested in hearing my Tesco rant!
Am I being unreasonable?

Once you've scanned the light item put it in the bagging area then lean on the scale and release and then it will usually register.

I used to live near a huge Tesco and the staff wouldn’t even walk over to verify that, they have cameras and a screen by their till entrance and would just press a button to let you continue.

Never had a particular issue with Tesco or any self-service. Although our local big Tesco has removed the option to mute the voice on the self-service which is really annoying.
AlongCameBetsy · 24/09/2022 18:19
Used my local tesco for the first time in yonks today, and I wasn't impressed to see even more tills given over to self service. Hate them!

Just scan it as you go round, saves loads of time and nothing needs reweighing
Lawazzalawoo · 24/09/2022 18:20
Use scan as you shop? I never have these issues with scan as you shop.
Although if you use the club card vouchers on your phone you need to put a bit of paper in the machine cos it wants an actual physical coupon.
LubaLuca · 24/09/2022 18:24
I do the scanning as I go thing as well, it's really easy and I can pack everything straight into bags.
MissRainbowBrite · 24/09/2022 18:24
If I've gone in for just a few things with the intention of using self checkout I've often got to the queue that's a mile long and found it's quicker to go and grab a self scan zapper, zap my items and pay then I'm still out before the last person in the self scan queue.
TheOrigRights · 26/09/2022 14:36
Oh I'm a divvy!
Of course, I need to go back to using the self scan. I wasn't able to for a while due to me having a bit of a tantrum. I'd self scanned, went to the self serve till to finish up, needed an assistant to remove a security tag, but there was NO ONE there. I was standing there like an idiot. So, I collected my things and went to a manned till. The system then freaked out because I'd already scanned items. So they froze me being able to do it for a while.
Another time I left the scanner on a shelf somewhere in store so again ended up using a manned till.
If I don't have a trolley it's a pain to shop and scan at the same time; not enough hands. But now that the other choices are so poor, I'll go back to using it.
I shouldn't go in shops really.

You can also wiggle a loyalty card in the slot, and then remove it, and it registers as coupon recieved. Just don't do it with a credit card and let go........

I hate it when they have to verify my age because I’m buying alcohol. They barely glance at me before hitting “clearly over 25”.
I mean, it may be accurate, but it’s just rude! 😂
Precipice · 26/09/2022 15:01
But what do you want them to do? If anything I think it's rude and annoying to waste the customer's time when I clearly don't look 17. I found it such a relief when they finally stopped regularly carding me in UK shops.
I agree the Sainsburys ones are better. I think Lidl's are the worst. I normally go to the staffed check-out line because I have a bunch of stuff and I much prefer to pay in cash, but one time I was there near closing and only had 6 items, so I thought it'd be quicker - for 4/6 I had to wait for the single attendant (the woman on the manned till!) to come over and authorise it because the weight didn't agree, so it took absolutely ages and was such a faff.

l feel very sorry for the staff working in this type of enviroment, its not their fault the self scan tills are next to useless. Supermarkets are paving the way for all automated tills and driving the online side of their business, it will never go back to the way it was.
