This old BBC article from 2015 gives an interesting insight into Kwarsi Kwarteng's right-wing views on the welfare state:

BBC News - Turn benefits into repayable loan, says Tory group

At what level would that be set, enough to house a family in a flat or a house? Enough to support 2 children or 6?

What do you want? A digression into costings of an idea that isn’t even on the table at the moment?

my fundamental stance is that everybody should be adequately sheltered, fed and have access to a healthcare and education system. I believe that there is a societal responsibility to ensure that regardless of anyones other life choices.

There’s plenty available on the internet if you’re interested in universal basic income that you can research without detailing this thread.

Not really. In much the same way you asked me what my bar would be I was just trying to find out what parameters you might have, if you don't want to discuss it then it's no skin off my nose.

I don’t believe you should have to pay back benefits. However, I do believe that if f you receive benefits, you should work in return. I’m not talking about working tax credits or disability, but those on income support who don’t work. It’s an opportunity to learn new skills and remain employable, and help in the community.

If there is work that can be found for someone to do in return for receiving benefits, then that is called employment and should be remunerated as such.

FFS! People are so blinded by jealousy because someone else might be in receipt of benefits that they cannot see the absolute fucking obvious!

To be fair this entire thread is a digression into an idea that isn't even on the table!

I agree entirely with your first sentence! If there is work, pay people.

@lannistunut yes becAuse they rent out other rooms too as its a house with more than one bedroom
You really don't live in the same world if you don't think things like this happen
Also if your working around here you need transport , public is not available after 5.30pm and doesn't go hardly anywhere where the ind estates etc are based or into the next town
So a young person working often has to run a car , whereas one that doesn't have to go out to work doesn't, that saves a fair amount
He gets enough to live the lifestyle he likes , which is staying in smoking weed
Or sleeping but the point is he has no valid reason not to work other than not wanting to
My dh nephew was similar didn't want to work , he has now started at 24
He only got £75-80 a week as he lived at home but again he was choosing not to work , sil took no rent , paid his mobile , bought his clothes so the money was enough to go out on and he stayed home from 16-24 ( odd work stint now and again)
So not a huge amount a week but why should he of got it at all when he wAs choosing not to work?
Then you have disabled people not getting enough helo who would work if they could and often would prefer to but don't have that choice
