To give my 7 year old alcohol free beer?

I just gave her some Corona Zero and DP hit the roof saying I'm giving her the taste for alcohol.

YABU as what is the value in encouraging a child to want to drink?

It clearly isn't an issue on physical health grounds but it is a weird thing to do. I agree with your DH.

iklboo · 23/09/2022 20:00

My parents have a photo of me swigging Newkie Brown from the bottle aged about four. Some things are best left in the 1970s.

It was just a sip, why is everyone being so dramatic

This. Wowsers lighten up. Yet again on Mum's net I hear myself saying the French are much better than us at this..

Really? I call bullshit because no one is that stupid.

Nope, they definitely are. I was really shocked to see our friends give their 6 year old a can of alcohol free beer when we went to their house.
Thankfully they didn't offer my son one as I would have said not a chance

Figgygal · 23/09/2022 20:03

I wouldnt have done it but hey I drank shandy bass as a kid why is that any different?

Lol at the majority of responses on here. People need to get a grip. It was a sip of an alcohol
free beer, FFS.

Trying to keep your child sheltered and in the dark about alcohol isn’t going to always work out for the best.

The OP doesn’t deserve the absolute hounding they are getting on here.

The kid is 7. You don't need to know anything about beer at 7.

SparkyBlue · 23/09/2022 20:06

I assume you meant that she took a sip not that you poured her out a glass? Mine have often done that. And I remember doing similar as a child and thinking it all tasted vile.

MrsMitford3 · 23/09/2022 20:09

But it's not really "no alcohol" is it?

It's low alcohol-which is not appropriate for a seven year old child-
what message does it send?
To get him to like the taste?
Glamourise it?
Be part of the gang?

Why on earth would you??

PatientlyWaiting21 · 23/09/2022 20:10

I’m pretty chill, but wtf are thinking?!

cbatopainttheshed · 23/09/2022 20:11

I could sort of understand it if she'd asked to taste it (but at 7 would probably still said No it's a grown ups drink), but to offer it is weird and irresponsible.

enjoyingscience · 23/09/2022 20:11

Does that mean I’m doomed because I used to buy a cider lolly from the ice cream van?

ffs.

Its a weird choice because later is bitter and horrible, but an awful lot of people treat alcohol free lager as they would any other soft drink now. It definitely isn’t a slippery slope towards destitution and wanton recklessness.

Soubriquet · 23/09/2022 20:11

Why?!

She’s seven. Even alcohol free is not good

limitededitionbarbie · 23/09/2022 20:13

Is it not the same as the cans of shandy bass when you were a kid?

Soubriquet · 23/09/2022 20:15

Should have read the entire thread first [embarassed]

No. it was just a sip. A sip won’t hurt

Dollydea · 23/09/2022 20:15

I was obsessed with cans of shandy bass as a kid & cider lollies from the ice cream van.
I enjoy the odd drink now but definitely never had any issues with alcohol.

I can't really see the issue tbh.

Discovereads · 23/09/2022 20:17

Corona Cero is actually 0.0% alcohol.
Its literally barley water with hops. Quite healthy, nothing wrong with a 7yo sipping it or drinking it imho. Better than coke or Pepsi.

groceries.morrisons.com/products/corona-cero-0-0-576640011
”Type: Alcohol free Sunshine lager
ABV: 0.0%
Overall impression: Moderate malty and grainy aromas, with slight fruity and citrussy notes.
Ingredients
Water, Barley Malt, Maize, Sugar, Hops, Natural Flavours“

CanIBeElectric2 · 23/09/2022 20:18

When I was pregnant with DS, I let DD taste my Becks Blue. She liked it so much, I let her have a whole bottle to herself. She was 2. She’s now 14 and has no interest in alcohol.

Rotherweird · 23/09/2022 20:19

This is the oddest thread ever. “Zero” beers have no alcohol in them at all - yes there are very low alcohol beers that have 0.5% alcohol but zero beers are 0.0%. Giving her a try is no different from having a drink of juice.

keeprunning55 · 23/09/2022 20:19

No. That was a bit daft. Live and learn-don’t do it again.

TooGosh · 23/09/2022 20:19

Actually, as others have said, being an alcoholic means I am an extremely good judge of drinks. Alcohol free is not getting a taste for alcohol. Allowing them a sip takes away the aura of mystery, exclusiveness and the sense of it being a special adult only drink, which feeds the alcoholic tendancy to normalise drinking after work, when celebrating, when tired, stressed....when "adulting"...

Simonjt · 23/09/2022 20:20

Alcohol free beer doesn’t give children a taste for alcohol, just like drinking cocaine free coke doesn’t give you a taste for cocaine.

Brace yourself for the replies to this 😬

MoaningMaude · 23/09/2022 20:23

I used to sip my parents wine, g&t's, beer, larger etc as a child, I used love cans of Bass Shandy, I have never had an issue with alcohol and actually gave up drinking years ago, but I do still enjoy a 0% larger shandy as a weekend treat, I think most on this thread just need to calm. down.

Unicorn717 · 23/09/2022 20:24

7???🤣

Alcohol free or not I don't get why you'd do it. My son asks for a sip of coke sometimes and I still say no at that age🤣 maybe I'm OTT tho.
