I just gave her some Corona Zero and DP hit the roof saying I'm giving her the taste for alcohol.

@FetlocksBlowingInTheWind 'effectively nothing' isn't the same as nothing.

@FetlocksBlowingInTheWind 'effectively nothing' isn't the same as nothing.

Do you get drunk from a banana then? Or a slice of bread? That's the same amount of alcohol.

Discovereads · 23/09/2022 19:06

Non alcoholic beer is actually quite healthy to drink. All your B vitamins, hops, and brewers yeast are nutrients we often don’t get enough of in our modern diet.

orbitalcrisis · 23/09/2022 19:06

How can she get a taste for alcohol without actually drinking alcohol? Alcohol free beer doesn't taste that much like beer to me. Will lemonade give her a taste for alcopops? Grape juice for wine?

Bonjovispjs · 23/09/2022 19:07

@MaybeIWillFuckOffThen Oh my God, cider lollies, I loved them as a kid, that's a real blast from the past I'd totally forgotten about 😁

Mangogogogo · 23/09/2022 19:08

i probably wouldn’t have done it but this wouldn’t bother me a dot tbh.

girlmom21 · 23/09/2022 19:08

@FetlocksBlowingInTheWind I never said you'll get drunk off it... I said it contains alcohol.

SapphosRock · 23/09/2022 19:10

She didn't really like it so hopefully future alcoholism has been avoided.

Why not just pour her a glass of alcohol free wine next eh !?

I just would attempt to keep a child unaware of the taste of any alcohol until older - I mean no one actually waits till 18 to try it but I do t think I'd be asking g a 7 year old if they want some .

I used to have a very dilute port and lemonade in a tiny sherry glass as Xmas when I was younger to make me feel more grown up at Xmas ! But I asked for it and it was very diluted , I never asked for it as a general thing through the year but we didn't have alcohol in the house when I was very small.
I think teaching a sensible relationship with booze is good , but I wouldn't normalise it as a regular fizzy drink . 🤷🏻‍♀️

Kerrrmieee · 23/09/2022 19:12

I think it's the offering part that is weird. If she'd been nagging to try it then maybe a sip knowing they're highly likely not to enjoy it, but to offer? That's odd.

TonTonMacoute · 23/09/2022 19:12

Let have a sip to try, fine.

Giving her a whole can to drink, wrong.

Eddieisadick · 23/09/2022 19:15

Depends what you mean? A sip, sure. A bottle, weird.

i let my 7 yr old taste any alcoholic drinks if she wants (she doesn’t usually)

Luxurysleuth007 · 23/09/2022 19:15

I’m on the fence here because I loved a Ben Shaws shandy as a kid, beer bottle sweets and used to love those chalky fake cigarette sweets. I don’t really drink and have never smoked in my life so I guess I got my fix as a tween? 🤷🏻‍♀️

musicviking1 · 23/09/2022 19:40

100% with your husband

HairyMothballs · 23/09/2022 19:41

are you mad?

Spacemonkey2016 · 23/09/2022 19:41

@Kerrrmieee Came here to say the same thing. Asking if she wanted to try it, is very strange.

It’s such a stupid thing to do because children don’t need alternatives to alcohol

i think it’s not very sensible of you to let them drink these types of things, what’s wrong with water or squash for a child? They hardly need to start drinking what you have unless you allow it.

will you be wanting them to bring back fake sweetie cigarettes? After all it’s not the real thing Hmm

Numperpickle · 23/09/2022 19:50

BananaSpanner · 23/09/2022 18:52

I wouldn’t give it to mine at that age, I think it just kind of sends the wrong message. That said, it’s not that big of a deal and I’m sure I remember drinking shandy from a can as a treat on the beach in Wales when I was under 10!

This^^

I remember having to stop dh giving dd a sip of his zero % beer at a restaurant as I think it sends the wrong message and we are "not till you're 18 and can legally buy it yourself" parents.

But I don't think it's the biggest of deals tbh. I know of parents who still give little sips of wine or whatever to their dcs. Off the top of my head I can think of a family with parents who are in the armed services and a teacher and another who are a doctor and a police officer. It isn't unheard of, so I wouldn't be that shocked or upset to hear about this.

Was it an entire bottle? I'm guessing a sip?

dangerrabbit · 23/09/2022 19:51

It was just a sip, why is everyone being so dramatic

YellowTreeHouse · 23/09/2022 19:52

What is wrong with you? Why would you do that?

Relevanceiskey · 23/09/2022 19:53

Jesus, this thread of full of the types of parents whose kids go to uni and let loose because their parents had them on tight reins until they turned 18. A bit of some ALCOHOL FREE beer? Are you all mad?

slowquickstep · 23/09/2022 19:53

The word fuckwit was made just for you.

Letsbefriends · 23/09/2022 19:58

It’s not something I would generally do - although it’s no different to giving your child a sip of coke?

Someone mentioned it being a safeguarding issue? No it isn’t. It’s effectively juice.

Energy drinks are much worse. As are full sugar caffeine drinks. There is no alcohol in the drink and the OP has not suggested that she is giving her child bottles of beer regularly, so he is highly unlikely to develop a taste for it.

While it wouldn’t occur to me to offer my child a sip because it does feel like an adult drink, it’s also not a big deal either - the responses on here are OTT.

LondonLovie · 23/09/2022 19:58

Are you talking about them trying a sip? My kids have smelt / sipped beer and wine at that age. They didn't like it very much and that was about it
