Do I call again?

Earlier I posted that my boss had put me on rota to work Sunday afternoon when I have plans. I told them I had plans and I couldn't work it. I was given a very weird description of the job and the whole basic "We'll call you back" shpiel. I've been waiting since 2 pm. Three and a half hours now

My boss and her team are surprisingly shocking at their jobs. When I interviewed a few months back they made it seem like the best job ever but I think the only one who had her head in gear has left. She's the one I interviewed with

I'm past anxious now. I'm livid, how hard is it to run a business?

AIBU to call again. I'll be out of pocket if I miss these plans: Dinner and Bowling which I fully paid for on my own (Not cheap for six adults)

You've said you can't do it so I don't get what the issue is. Do you have to do whatever shifts they tell you?

Cosycover · 23/09/2022 17:33

Is it an extra shift?
Surely you need to wait on the rota before you make plans?

stressedandunimpressed · 23/09/2022 17:33

I've said I can't do it but was given a bloody vague answer. They've had three hours to sort cover and call me back - They haven't. And now my branch office is shut. I'm on a Zero hour contract so I dont have to do the shifts, I wasn't asked to find cover. They said they'd deal with it

@Cosycover I was already given my rota. I had three hours Monday the rest of the week off. And had five hours on Sunday, that was my rota. But they've added extra hours in that I can't do

JamesBondOO7 · 23/09/2022 17:35

I'd leave that crappy place.

MatildaTheCat · 23/09/2022 17:36

Forget it. They have no reason to call you back if you’ve said you can’t work. Unless you were unclear and said something to lead them to believe you’d do it in an absolute emergency?

How do you mean a vague answer. Surely it's just "ok thanks". If they can't make you do it what are they expecting?!

memyselfi · 23/09/2022 17:38

They'll call you back to say what ?

PalePurplePumpkin · 23/09/2022 17:39

Like PPs I don't get the problem here.

You're on a zero hours contract. You were asked to work and you can't.

End of story, surely?

stressedandunimpressed · 23/09/2022 17:41

@everyone I wish it were that simple everybody. My boss still wants me to do the shift because its still on my work phone rota. But I can't and now I dont know what to do

As I said; My boss and her team are shockingly useless

OP posts:
properdoughnut · 23/09/2022 17:45

So it went like this?:

You: I can't do the shift on x y z.
Them: ok it's this this and this we'll get back to you.
You:????

PalePurplePumpkin · 23/09/2022 17:45

You're just not getting it though, on this thread or on your other one.

It really is that simple. You're on a zero hours contract, they've asked you to work and you can't.

You don't have to, so that's why it's end of story. Stop stressing out 🙂

stressedandunimpressed · 23/09/2022 17:46

@properdoughnut pretty much yeah. I called on-call, she said she'd talk to the boss. I've heard nothing back, Bowling wont refund me. Dinner - Not so sure about the restaurant. I'm just.. I'm a bit fuming now

OP posts:
Dacadactyl · 23/09/2022 17:46

Are you a carer OP?

PalePurplePumpkin · 23/09/2022 17:48

OP are you the carer who posts a lot about work?

If so, they really won't change, they sound like a useless bunch.

stressedandunimpressed · 23/09/2022 17:53

@Dacadactyl I am a carer indeed

@PalePurplePumpkin I'm relatively new to mumsnet. My old account had a post about toddler's shoes and a few other bits but I lost that email. Oh I know they won't change

If youre a carer, all these posters saying "you are on a zero hours contract" have no idea of the pressure the office will put on you.

They wont take the calls off your rota, then when you dont turn up because you told them you couldnt work it, they say youve missed calls. They cant cover the work with another carer because there arent enough carers. So poor old Mavis has someone doing her breakfast at about midday and is sat in a wet pad all morning.

Then the office discipline you and threaten not to give you more work and cos youre zero hours you have no leg to stand on.

OP, email your co ordinator and branch manager. Say "as discussed earlier today with (managers name) i cannot attned work on sunday because of xxxx reason. I first informed you of this on xxxx date."

Be prepared for some pushback though.

stressedandunimpressed · 23/09/2022 18:10

@Dacadactyl I called in to the office as soon as I saw the updated Rota, got told I'd receive a call back from the boss. Been waiting like a total muppet for hours now. I've forked out quite a hefty sum to go out with my sister and friends, I've told work I can't come in and they're doing bog all to help me.

If I had the email I'd email them. They can't even order a piss up in a brewery (sorry for the language)

I'm close to saying sod it and jumping ship. I really am

I think all care companies are the same.

Adult social care in this country is SHOCKING. If ever Panorama needed to delve into an industry that would be it.

Let it be the problem of on call. Ring them, tell them in no uncertain terms you arent coming in on sunday and that they need to find cover. Make them take it off your rota and resend it.

If oncall is different people to your co ordinator, they may have more luck covering the calls. The carers might help on call more than their co ordinator if they dont like her etc.

UserError012345 · 23/09/2022 19:16

I'd take it as you're not needed

But you're going to the events and not working so thats OK? I don't see why you need bosses permission?
