I’m going to play devils advocate here. If bankers earn bigger bonuses, they’ll get taxed more. So effectively, the big bonuses go back to the coffers?
Secondly , is it better for businesses to settle here and pay a bit less tax, rather than go abroad? Atleast the UK would benefit from the tax it pays. The UK wouldn’t benefit at all if a company sets up camp abroad.

If a business is attracted to set up here because it pays less tax,it still employs people who work here and pay tax and NI. So still benefits the UK?

I think the chancellor said that if you ask businesses to pay a bit less tax, they are less likely to avoid paying it or look at leaving the UK.

Again, devils advocate.

I suppose you would need to balance the tax receipts from the businesses that move here against the drop in tax from existing businesses. If insufficient businesses are attracted to cover the drop from current businesses it won't help.

Yes. All those businesses rushing to move here since Brexit.

Just leaving this here. Just in case anyone is tempted to fall for Kwarteng’s insistence that this is a budget that puts money back in people’s pockets. I think it’s quite clear which section of the population is receiving most help during this cost of living crisis.

if this government is not made up of total arseholes who are only interested in themselves you’d have to assume there’s an announcement coming in the ne t few days which will increase entitlement to UC, increase UC payments and see significant handouts to those not on UC so they can make it through this winter. We’re also going to need a significant investment in social care and some way of getting staff to work in social care. And an explanation of where they are funding the money to do this while reducing taxes would be useful.

That's the fella.

The tories are leaving the biggest sh*t show for Labour to pick up.
They know they are out at next election so are doing what they can for the rich b4 they say GOOD BYE.

aramox1 · 25/09/2022 18:22

I feel really thick but could someone explain if the budget and this minibudget gets debated or voted on?

It does. It seems that some Tory backbenchers who are terrified it will lose their seats for them are debating voting against it or abstaining. Truss isn’t very popular with the parliamentary party.

ArabellaScott · 25/09/2022 19:13

I sincerely hope they vote it the fuck down. The FT seems to think it's reckless and a terrible idea; everyone whose interests it's ostensibly to promote seems unhappy. I really can't see who this is supposed to impress.

ArabellaScott · 25/09/2022 19:15

Oh, I see. This is who it impresses:

Yes - give him the benefit of the doubt. He’s the most qualified Chancellor this country has ever had. Phd in Economics from Cambridge, Harvard etc…

His PhD was in history of economics. His degree was classics.

So not that well qualified.

So he should know what didn't work in the past but this doesn't seem to be the case.

Well quite. They’re blowing everything up on their way out of government but doing it in such a way as they make as much money as possible doing so. They aren’t even bothering to hide their corruption or the fact they are making the rich richer while the rest of the country are going to have to spend the winter warning themselves round a bonfire of workers rights and environmental protections.

At this rate all the economic migrants we need to create growth are going to be looking at the U.K. and thinking ‘fuck that.’

Probably a fair comment!
