She shortchanged me but denied it.

Recently bought something from local shop/newsagents

When I got home I realised she had shortchanged me so I went straight back and showed her the change she had given me.
It was only a matter of five mins or so.

Instead of going to the till and apologising to my horror she denied it. She said she had given me the right change. It was then awkward.
Why would I go back with the money in my hand to show her what shed given me if it hadnt happened?
I just left it, as I need to go in there alot it didn't seem worth arguing. Could not believe the attitude though. Something I won't forget.
Why didn't she just apologise and go to the till and give me the missing coin?
AIBU.
No one else around at that mo just her and I.

YABU, you should have checked at the time, how's she to know you're telling the truth?

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 22/09/2022 11:47

But, she could have said leave your number and if there's a discrepancy at cashing up time, she'll let you know.

But again, the onus is on you to check really

SavoirFlair · 22/09/2022 11:48

I just left it, as I need to go in there alot

do you though? Is there no alternative? Just for your own mental health etc and an opportunity to let things cool down a bit

something I won't forget

you need to - don’t carry this with you in a negative way, just check change when in shop next time

AdInfinitum12 · 22/09/2022 11:48

You should have checked at the time. Why would she trust you're telling the truth?
What's would stop someone putting money aside as soon as they're out of the shop and going back complaining she didn't give them enough?

123rd · 22/09/2022 11:49

Some shops have signs up saying to check change before leaving as errors can't be rectified afterwards.
Yabu

QuestionableMouse · 22/09/2022 11:49

I don't think you can do anything as you left the shop unfortunately so now it's down to your word against hers. I've seen people go outside, take money out of their change and then come back in to say they've been short changed. I work at McDonald's so we then have to pull the till, count it and double check which proves the issue one way or the other.

I'd check my change in front of her next time. Might be worth contacting the shop owner/manager to see if they can do anything but unfortunately I wouldn't hold your breath! ☹️

Was it much money? (not that it matters, just probably easier to sort out if the till was up £10 and you're short that much!)

People used to count change out.

PositiveLife · 22/09/2022 11:49

Does she own it or just work there? If a customer noticed at the time, we could sort it there and then but if they came back later we couldn't do anything until the till was cashed up at the end of the day (we would take details). Manager/owner would have some discretion to just pay it though.

Lockheart · 22/09/2022 11:50

This is a fairly common scam. Customer pays with a £10 note, gets their change, leaves, comes back a few minutes later claiming they gave you a £20 note and you've short-changed them. I'm not surprised she refused to give you more money.

You should have left your number and asked them to call if there was a problem when the till was cashed up.

KatherineJaneway · 22/09/2022 11:51

Do you know how many people pull this type of stunt?

Fishlegs · 22/09/2022 11:52

We’ve moved now, but at our old corner shop there was one worker who would regularly short change me. I soon learnt to stand at the till and obviously count my change, and taught the kids to do the same. The first time I did that he quickly slipped another pound coin into my hand, and then gave me the correct change thereafter.

It was a pita tbh, and I’m glad we moved. It’s one of those things that are difficult to prove afterwards, so the onus is always on the customer to check.

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 22/09/2022 11:52

Why would I go back with the money in my hand to show her what shed given me if it hadnt happened?

So you could scam them for more?

Count your change before you leave. It's standard to do so and very few shops would allow a customer to walk out and then walk back in querying their change.

Blinkingheckythump · 22/09/2022 11:52

🤣🤣 Course she should have just taken your word. And mine when I go in later pay with a tenner and tell her it was a 20 just so I'm up money. And the next person and the one after

OneFrenchEgg · 22/09/2022 11:55

It's horrible when this happens. Our corner shop took £20 from me, started serving someone else and sent me off and then I got outside realised and the woman refused to admit it. They said they'd checked the till when I rang later but if she'd nicked it who would know? She only had to put in the right about or not ring it through. I just stopped going there.

Needmorelego · 22/09/2022 11:56

Mistakes happen. She couldn't just believe you and hand over the money. The till would need to be counted which can't be done until the end of the day and it will be 'over' if she did short change you.
You should have left your details for the manager (or asked to speak the manager) and if the till was over they can contact you to give you the missing change.
But as you didn't do that it can't had been that much money missing. Mistakes happen - you should have checked before leaving.

MrsClatterbuck · 22/09/2022 11:56

I worked in a bank. There was a sign to say check your money before leaving the counter. Obviously we balanced every evening and any discrepancy would be found then.

Works there.

It was like she was so sure she didn't make a mistake how could she be?
Yes I take on board I should have checked before I left.
It was much better all round when people used to count change out that stopped any problems all round.
Never see it now.

IamSmarticus · 22/09/2022 11:58

I don't know of any shop that would just take your word for it and just hand over money that you thought you were missing if you didn't raise it at the time. You could have dropped it on the floor outside for all they know.

Aubriella · 22/09/2022 11:58

I'm afraid you need to check your money whilst you're standing there. Don't feel rushed. Make an extra check at this store.

Icanstillrecallourlastsummer · 22/09/2022 11:59

It sounds like a genuine mistake and, with her being an employee, surely you can understand that if she doesn't remember making a mistake (which presumably she doesn't know she made) then she can't just tkae your word for it. I wouldn't take this as a personal slighy, but it's a good lesson to check before you leave for the future.

dottypotter · 22/09/2022 12:07

To ppl saying check your change in shop I understand that but dosent it look like you don't trust them by checking the change?🤔
Where do you do this?
What if there's a queue?
Do people personally stand there in front of the assistant and check change.
Curious?

OP posts:
Aubriella · 22/09/2022 12:09

@dottypotter it's not rude at all. She counts your money when you give it to her, so why shouldn't you count it when she gives you your change? The queue is not your problem.

greenhousegal · 22/09/2022 12:12

Does shop not accept contactless cards/google wallet?

I can't remember the last time I used cash for anything. But I am sure you had your reasons.

iklboo · 22/09/2022 12:15

I've usually worked it out in my head before change is handed over so if it's not the same I'll check the receipt against what I've been given, yes.

Hardly the point is it? People still use cash.

Does everyone who pays by cash stand there whatever it is, shop bus etc and check their change.
Why did shops stop counting it out back to you then you wouldn't need to query,?
