She shortchanged me but denied it.

Recently bought something from local shop/newsagents

When I got home I realised she had shortchanged me so I went straight back and showed her the change she had given me.
It was only a matter of five mins or so.

Instead of going to the till and apologising to my horror she denied it. She said she had given me the right change. It was then awkward.
Why would I go back with the money in my hand to show her what shed given me if it hadnt happened?
I just left it, as I need to go in there alot it didn't seem worth arguing. Could not believe the attitude though. Something I won't forget.
Why didn't she just apologise and go to the till and give me the missing coin?
AIBU.
No one else around at that mo just her and I.

If its a shop I don't know well, I make a mental note of the last 4 numbers on a £20 note so I can prove it is what I handed over.

IGetAParkingThread · 22/09/2022 14:56

It’s a well known scam to do that and ask for the change. Oh I gave you a £20 not a £10 etc. we would take a number and call if there was an issue when counting the till at closing, but tills are regularly a pound over or under

NonagonInfinityOpensTheDoor · 22/09/2022 14:56

It’s horrible when you realise you’ve got the wrong change and the shop doesn’t believe you though
It’s also horrible to be screamed at and abused for giving someone the wrong change when you haven’t. Happened to me quite a lot when I worked in a leisure centre. The best time was when I had just started a shift and someone came to pay for their child to swim. Came back and said I’d shirt changed as they paid with a £20. Impossible as she was the only person I’d served and only had 1 £10 note in the till. She made such a tit of herself demanding my pockets be searched and I was patted down etc. She ended up getting herself and her child removed from the building and a temporary ban from all services in the borough for being an aggressive cunt.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 22/09/2022 14:57

To ppl saying check your change in shop I understand that but dosent it look like you don't trust them by checking the change?

Well you don't trust her! How long does it take to check your change? Mere seconds.

Unfortunately you left the premises without checking so the onus is on you. Otherwise if she'd just given you more change, her boss could have accused her of theft.

Musti · 22/09/2022 15:00

your responsibility to check your change when you’re given it, just as it is their responsibility to check they have been given the correct amount at the time.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/09/2022 15:05

I bet she'd say something like "gosh if I had a pound everytime I heard someone say that..., actually thinking about it I have!"

heartbroken22 · 22/09/2022 15:08

What a horrible person. You should have said I hope you choke on it.

Some shops have signs up saying to check change before leaving as errors can't be rectified afterwards.
Yabu

Yeah, this was common as I was growing up.

Yes this would have been the right thing to do.
i wouldn’t have expected her to take your word for it but equally take your point that how could she be so sure she didn’t make an accidental mistake.
She should’ve taken your number in case it came to light when cashing up.

daisychain01 · 22/09/2022 15:45

Nowadays till receipts sometimes include the amount of cash given and the change returned.

quite frankly if it was less than £1 I wouldn't loose any sleep over it and learn your lesson about checking your change.

i thought it was a tenner given back when it should have been a £20. That would have been worth worrying about.

ancientgran · 22/09/2022 15:50

If they have already put your note in the till what good is questioning your change straight away? When I was a teenager I worked at M&S and we had to put the money we were given on the shelf over the cash drawer, then give the change and only then put their money away when the change wasn't questioned.

If you give them a £20 note and then give you change for £10 and you question it but the £10 is already put away how do you prove you gave them a £20?

Nottogetapenny · 22/09/2022 16:03

My husbands gran a few years ago, gave the shop assistant a £10 note. She was given change for a £20 note. Gran realise this and after the next customer told the assistant she had made a mistake and was starting to say she was given too much money back, the assistant was so rude and wouldn’t listen and said she never makes mistakes and wouldn’t listen!

Bubblebubblebah · 22/09/2022 16:30

Ha. The amount of prople I had stuffing fivers in their pockets than returning claiming I gave them less. We were lucky to have cctv so I always happily offered to look back at recordings.
Somehow they all remembered they must have accidentally put the money somewhere and forgot.

However, mistakes happen and if someone says straight away you usually sort it.

Also the lovely distract and hode the note technique. Unfortunately in my experience more people try to steal than make mistakes.

Bubblebubblebah · 22/09/2022 16:32

Also no. It doesn't look back to check the change tight there and then. No one should be taking that personally

giveovernate · 22/09/2022 19:40

Move on!

OlderParents · 22/09/2022 19:54

If they have already put your note in the till what good is questioning your change straight away?

Because as an honest shopworker I'd have realised and agreed with them, and corrected it immediately with an apology.

(And also not all mistakes are with notes!)

Although I like the M&S system you describe, never come across that before.

Calandor · 22/09/2022 21:06

Tbf people say this to try and get a tenner all the time. You should check when at the counter.

jazzybelle · 22/09/2022 21:17

You say she wouldn't give the missing coin. So how much did she short change you - £1 or £2?

NeckFanInSoftPlay · 22/09/2022 21:20

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 22/09/2022 11:47

YABU, you should have checked at the time, how's she to know you're telling the truth?

Are you joking?!?! You're blaming op for somebody else's mistake? Wow

Isitsixoclockalready · 22/09/2022 21:25

I guess that the truth would have been evident after cashing up had been done.

ShaneTwane · 22/09/2022 21:27

NeckFanInSoftPlay · 22/09/2022 21:20

Are you joking?!?! You're blaming op for somebody else's mistake? Wow

Its ops responsibility to check her own change. Shop assistants are human mistakes sometimes happen.

NeckFanInSoftPlay · 22/09/2022 21:29

@10HailMarys Doesn't really apply for vulnerable people/adults with special needs that though does it? God knows how many get targeted by dodgy shop staff.

OP given how confidently sure of herself she was, it sounds like she was on the rob. None the less I'd go in tomorrow and ask if their till happened to be up at all? You never know, there may be some cash waiting for you though I doubt it. I'd certainly inform the owner, whether or not PPs are declaring this to be all your fault. IF the owner's staff is stealing from their customers then he/she needs to know about it!!

NeckFanInSoftPlay · 22/09/2022 21:32

absolutelyanythingwilldo · 22/09/2022 12:33

I don't count the change i'm given as it seems rude (I know that's stupid) but if I pay for something I will know what notes and pounds I'm expecting to see back so if I bought something for £2.59 and pay with a tenner then I know I need to see a green note and 3 gold coins at least and I'm good.

Fivers are blue not green! 😆

Bubblebubblebah · 22/09/2022 21:38

NeckFanInSoftPlay · 22/09/2022 21:32

Fivers are blue not green! 😆

Force of habit there with old notes, isn't it😁

How much are we talking here? 10p?
