I think enough of those nineteen defendants might decide to cop a plea to escape jail for it to be a serious worry for Trump. I hope so, anyway.

I wasn't sure expecting this Monday, since much had been made of witnesses being called before Grand Jury Tuesday (today)
Interesting that Mark Meadows is indicted, there was a lot of speculation that he'd flipped.

I wouldn't rule a Meadows deal out. Meadows may not have worked out all the details of his deal yet, he's not done squealing, or the deal involves pleading guilty to a lesser charge. The AG has to keep his balls to the fire until he's told all he knows.

TheSilveryPussycat · 15/08/2023 13:46

Wow!

And Georgia trials are televised, you say? I presume CNN is still the channel I should be watching at this fascinating time?

BruceAndNosh · 15/08/2023 18:02

Interesting that the Grand Jurors names are NOT redacted

CatsonPollock · 15/08/2023 18:08

Prosecutor Willis is asking for trial in 6 months but sadly that is optimistic according to the Washington Post.

The prosecution of Trump and the others in Fulton County will stand out for one distinct reason: Unlike the federal trials (unless the rules change), it should be televised.

That will seemingly bring a measure of transparency to the high-stakes proceedings and create appointment viewing — just as the House Jan. 6 committee hearings did last year but potentially with even greater numbers.

But unlike the other trials, that spectacle is less likely to play out when it matters politically. The many defendants and Trump’s already crowded legal calendar make this a strong candidate for getting delayed past the 2024 election. Willis says she will ask for a trial date within six months, but that’s ambitious.

That doesn’t mean it won’t matter politically. As noted above, the charges against Trump allies could matter when it comes to how the federal prosecution takes shape. Trump’s attacks on witnesses could create problems under Georgia’s witness intimidation laws, which allow bail only if there is “no significant risk of intimidating witnesses.”

And there remains the possibility of Trump’s winning the 2024 election and facing this trial as a sitting president.

And there's a lot of excitement on Xwitter re Georgia's law on bail - apparently it can be refused.

From Newsweek:
Weismann explained that due to Georgia's law on criminal bail, Trump would have to prove that he poses no flight risk, risk of witness intimidation, or risk of committing another crime before he is released on bail. The statute specifically states that the defendant can only be released on bail if they pose "no significant risk of intimidating witnesses or otherwise obstructing the administration of justice."
Trump's behavior on social media has already posed a potential legal problem for the judge presiding over his federal January 6 case, who has repeatedly warned the former president against any form of tampering with or intimidating witnesses and other individuals related to the investigation. Despite the injunction, Trump made a series of posts attacking U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan on Sunday.

Happy days 😊

Without a shred of irony...
Trump has been whining "why didn't they bring these charges 2 years ago"... But suddenly he announces he will be producing an "irrefutable report" on Monday which will prove fraud and exonerate him.
Why didn't he produce this report 2 years ago? 🙄

BruceAndNosh · 15/08/2023 19:36

Do we know what judge is getting the Georgia case? A Cannon or a Chutkan?

His gaslighting is beyond the scale. Shock

How can he try to dismiss the charges in Georgia by saying it is "an overwhelmingly Democrat state" ? Confused

It has a Republican Governor. A Republican Senate. A Republican Secretary of State. A Republican House of Representatives. Confused

Yes, its two senators are currently Democrat but that's about it in terms of elected positions.

Yup, and although Biden won 2020, Georgia voted for the Republican presidential candidate in the 6 preceding elections (including Trump in 2016).

The American right is such a weirdo cult of lies and denialism.

Upcoming dates for Trump's legal team:

Aug. 24: Judge Cannon to hold a hearing in the classified docs case in Florida

Aug. 25: Fani Willis gave Trump and others indicted in the Georgia case until noon to surrender

Aug. 28: Judge Chutkan to hold a hearing in D.C. in the election interference case

Yeah, right 'irrefutable report'. I put that in the same basket with all the times he's made a 'big announcement' that he would soon be making a 'big announcement' then nothing is ever announced. Bloviating mendacity at its best.

BruceAndNosh · 16/08/2023 07:54

Yep his report will be as "irrefutable" as the stuff MikePillow Lindell has been promising "in 2 weeks" for the past 36 months

Former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows is seeking to move the Fulton County, Georgia, prosecution against him to federal court so that he can try to get the case dismissed under federal law.
Meadows argued in a new court filing submitted in the US District Court of the Northern District of Georgia that he is entitled to bring a federal immunity defense because the Georgia state charges against him stem from his conduct as then-President Donald Trump’s chief of staff.

Apparently M Meadows and others are trying to get their cases moved to federal court in the hopes of a Trump appointed judge and a more sympathetic court.
Ha! Good luck with that one.

Scott McAfee is currently down to be the judge.

from Washington Post
One of the newest judges on the Fulton County Superior Court bench, Scott McAfee, has been assigned the sprawling racketeering case that charges former president Donald Trump and 18 allies with scheming to undo Trump’s 2020 election defeat in Georgia and elsewhere.

McAfee, a lifelong Georgian who lives in Atlanta, was nominated to fill a vacancy on the bench earlier this year by Gov. Brian Kemp (R), who had previously praised McAfee as “a tough prosecutor” who could “bring those to justice who break the law.”

Though McAfee was assigned the case soon after the indictment was handed up on Monday evening, it could be transferred to a different judge later in the process.

Oops! Cross post. Soz

DuncinToffee · 16/08/2023 09:01

I have seen tweets that Arizona could be the next state to indict Trump on charges in connection to trying to overturn the 2020 election results.

A former federal attorney said that even if they DO get it moved to federal court it will still be tried under GA state RICO law (not federal law) AND that if there is a conviction it will still be considered a STATE conviction and will not be pardonable by a POTUS. And in GA the governor does NOT have pardon power.

The attorney said this is most likely a delaying tactic or that somehow they think they may get a more favorable jury pool (didn't explain how) or judge. In essence, she said, all that happens is the trial would be moved to the courthouse 'two blocks up the road'.

InMySpareTime · 16/08/2023 15:51

I would love if if Biden changed the wording on the presidential power legislation so a president can pardon anyone else of a crime (but not pardon themselves). That would throw a spanner in the works.

That would be helpful for sure, but Biden can't do it.

The pardon power is enshrined in the Constitution, so they'd have to actually amend Article 2 Section 2, and that would take an act of Congress + ratification by 3/4 of the States.

Whether a POTUS can pardon himself is still untested. But there is something in US law about not being able to 'be your own judge' which some say means that a POTUS couldn't.

Four Seasons Total Landscaping press conference, between the crematorium and the sex shop, is my all time favourite political press conference.

Well, that and Liz Truss's THAT IS A DISGARCE Cheese speech.

I watch them on YoubTube when I'm feeling a bit sad and they cheer me up immediately 😁

BruceAndNosh · 16/08/2023 19:38

I assume quite a few of the untamed, unindicted Co conspirators have already flipped (certaiy several fake electors did which is what delayed the presentation to Grand Jury which was meant to happen months ago).
If Meadows has any sense (and he's a sharp cookie) he'll flip before Trump blames him fo everything. You know that Donald wouldn't pee on Meadows if he were on fire...

BruceAndNosh · 16/08/2023 19:41

Un-named.
Not untamed!

AcrossthePond55 · 16/08/2023 20:49

I'm in a blue state too, semi-rural. We're noticing the opposite! Hardly any of those 'flags a-flying'-bumper sticker-Go Brandon trucks to be seen. And haven't seen a 'Trump 2024' or whatever banner/yard sign pop up nearby. It's almost scary lol.

I think, but am not sure, that there is a mechanism for the issue to end up before the SCOTUS. But we'll just have to pray and VOTE in 2024 and encourage others to do so, so that we don't have to face that issue!
