That bank cards should fit our names on per our preference

RainbowTash · 21/09/2022 13:47

Just set up bank accounts for the children. They have a double-barrelled surname (but no hyphen).
The cards have just arrived, but the bank has chosen to format the names on the cards as first name, initial of first part of surname, last part of surname.
I can’t stand the surname being chopped up like this; it’s not their name. I’ve asked for new cards with First name initial, then full surname, but bank computer says no.

The names aren’t crazy long, but fitting first name plus both parts of the surname exceeds the allocation of letters the bank allows on the card. I know people with longer surnames than we have.

e.g. name is Amy Smith Jones
Bank card reads Amy S Jones
We want them to read A Smith Jones

AIBU that I think the bank should print the cards with the names on correctly?

YABU - it doesn’t matter
YANBU - yes, banks should be more flexible/accommodating.

100 percent this. My kids have double barreled last names and i wouldn't give 2 shits if this happened. Neither would they.

Bully for you. Other people are allowed to think differently Hmm

Also, as I said earlier, how rude and presumptuous and ignorant to assume the OP has NO other problems. She never said that.

Another stupid post.

@holidaynightmare

Exactly! There are bigger fish to fry than pretentious naming on bank cards. Get a grip!

And ANOTHER stupid and ignorant post. What is pretentious about wanting your actual REAL CORRECT name on your bank card?

What the fuck is wrong with some people? Confused

It’s also worth logging a complaint even if you decide to leave, if it is a case of the bank being unable to accommodate it then the issue should at least be flagged. Double barrel last names are increasingly common and the more people who complain the more likely it is to be reviewed

I agree. I will.

If it makes you feel better I couldn’t put my two middle name initials on the bank card so I only have one of my middle name initials on the card. It’s devastating.

TakeawayManAlan · 21/09/2022 17:53

RainbowTash · 21/09/2022 14:27

They can be, but they are pretty mainstream these days, so surely accommodations should be being made by now.

What’s gonna happen when the children of pretentious people with double barrel surnames marry the children of other pretentious people with double barrel surnames

Quadruple barel?

Then Octuple for the generation after?

Ridiculous pretentious nonsense

balalake · 21/09/2022 17:56

Many Icelandic people have long surnames, as do some Sri Lankans.
Sikhs, adherents of the fifth largest religion in the world, have a specific extra name.
Spaniards often have both father's surname and mother's maiden name as part of their names.

So the policy the OP describes seems to be to be discriminatory.

greenacrylicpaint · 21/09/2022 17:57

yanbu

when growing up we tried to change the bank's approach as 5 in our family have the same initials and bank would only print initial and surname.
that was fun

hulahooper2 · 21/09/2022 17:58

Yabu- Names have to fit a standard card format , they won’t change the banking system just for you

monsterpup · 21/09/2022 17:59

@TakeawayManAlan Other cultures have been doing this for generations with no problems, they take one last name from each parent.

Mary Jones Smith and Mark Davies Brown have a child

their child is now Matthew Brown Smith

But it's not the banking system as a whole. It's individual banks making up their own inflexible rules.

Why not just speak to the bank? Blimey.

OP already says they have. Blimey, perhaps you could read first, comment after?

And our (UK) culture has a more sensible approach that is already engrained in our system

@RainbowTash

The whole concept of double barrelled is pretentious not just on a bank card it shows a lack of identity aswell
Not mums name
Not dads name
Let's put them both together even if ridiculous and try to be something we're not

The thread is showing you as entitled and plain and simple just ridiculous

Phone the bank if you really have nothing better to worry about I'm sure they'll have a right good laugh and the ridiculousness of it all I know I would!

It’s not your last name though is it

Its a bullshit combining of your last name and the other parent’s

Its tragic

TheCanyon · 21/09/2022 18:23

This thread has made me realise I've never had my full name on any bank card, it's always been miss e f g, then Mrs e f h*. maiden name 7, 5 and 11 letters, married name 7, 5 and 8 so not exactly massive.

I guess they can choose to drop one half of their previous name, or merge them if that works and join with spouse’s surname, or make up a new name. Or triple barrel (I do know someone with a triple barrelled name. Day to day she just uses one though.)
We have the freedom to do this, we can change our names by Deed Poll. Whatever. Banks need to accommodate all names where reasonable. If it can fit on a card, that’s reasonable.

Their father and I are not together.

I am glad my children and I share a surname on our passports, without my having to keep his. I am also glad their father also has his surname on their passports.

I don’t feel pretentious at all. It was done to feel equal, that is all.
