Diana and Charles Questions

So this is not a AIBU but it's an ATBU for are THEY being unreasonable.

I have seen a lot of you tube shorts marking the 25 year death of Lady Diana Spencer/the princess. They say she was a devoted mum and participated in the boys' school events, gave them macdonald's ect. Was a lovely, normal mum. I don't dispute that. Even though she died just before I was born so i hardly know anything about her, i think she is amazing and did not deserve to die. That brings me on to how some people said she wrote in her diary that she thought Charles was planning to kill her (staging an accident) so he could marry Camilla and that she knew something was wrong with the brakes in her car. For any of you who don't know, she died in a car accident in Paris on August 31rd 1997.

She was the people's princess and adored by all, she was one of us as her children went to public schools, she dressed casual. ect.

I also have some questions:

  • Where was Diana buried, I know she had a state funeral thing?
  • Did Diana see her kids much after the divorce?
  • If Diana was alive now, what would her position be?
  • Charles did not mention Diana in his becoming king speech - he could have said 'And the boys' mother who taught them so much' or something - do you think he should have?

YABU: They are being unreasonable and Charles did not order Diana's murder
YANBU: They are not being unreasonable and Charles did order Diana's murder

I’ve always thought that Catherine has dodged a very large bullet with Diana having died before she came on the scene-I don’t think she could have handled the competition (which would have been in her eyes), but I think she might have got on fine with Meghan…

Sorry my post was in response to this one.

Yes @Shortandfurry301 and @Cescanes . This is exactly what i thought

You don’t know much about her if you don’t know about her brother who made a very strong speech at her funeral. Diana died in a chauffeur’s car, so brakes on her own car nothing to do with anything. Why would Charles mention Diane during his speech as king? Not appropriate at all

LouisCatorze · 21/09/2022 17:10

You don’t know much about her if you don’t know about her brother who made a very strong speech at her funeral. I read something recently that suggested that BoJo may have had a hand in writing that speech!

I wouldn't have thought Diana would have got on with Meghan, as I think they share many personality traits. They'd probably have loathed each other at first sight.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/09/2022 17:13

Could we avoid using the word 'hate' to mean disagreement, dislike, impatience, exasperation, annoyance and so on? I didn't hate Diana and I don't now. I didn't warm to her. This is allowed. (She probably wouldn't have thought much of me either.) We seem to be losing the ability to express nuance, and I think that's extremely unfortunate.

It was sad, she was in love with him at first or at least her idea of him, he was a romantic fairytale Prince Charming to her.

This above everything I've read about her over the years is what surprised me the most. She was amazingly beautiful - Charles was punching in stratospheres above his league. Each to their own and all that but I've often thought choosing someone else over Diana is akin to choosing to fly on an EasyJet plane versus a private jet.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/09/2022 17:33

Punching above his weight? He was the heir to the throne and in line to inherit a massive fortune! Many women would overlook jug ears and an earnest manner for that.

Testina · 21/09/2022 17:34

“I have just seen something about her having an affair with somebody and Harry looks a lot like that somebody but i thought that was all a bit far fetched.”

Wait…
Far fetched that someone who cheated on her husband (I say that without judgement) might have had a child that wasn’t his? As it happens, Harry is obviously Charles’ son. But, as a theory - why would it be far fetched?

Compared to you buying nonsense that Diana was murdered?

OK.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Maybe Charles is one of those men for whom looks are not everything. And there was clearly no meeting of minds.

I've always thought Camilla was very sexy/confident in a way Diana wasn't (most of that due to age probably), a family member has met her a few times through work and says she's lovely- friendly, funny and lights up the room.

Some people aren't so shallow that they are only attracted to a person's looks.

Testina · 21/09/2022 17:47

“she knew something was wrong with the brakes in her car”

It wasn’t “her car”. It was owned by a luxury car company in France. It’s just the car that was hired out. Like a taxi, pretty much. If there was a brake issue in her own car - that’s wear and tear for you.

The driver was 3x the French limit and drive at 2x the speed limit. Sure the press were chasing, but the drive had waved to them to signal they were leaving, and goaded them that they wouldn’t catch him. They died for two reasons: a macho arsehole drunken man was showing off, and the one thing that would probably have mitigated that - putting on a seatbelt - they didn’t bother to do.

As conspiracy theories go, there are simpler ways to kill someone off.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 21/09/2022 18:09

I'm late 50s so I remember quite well.

I remember that Diana had a bit of a relationship with a heart surgeon. She wanted to view heart surgery and he obliged. The press got hold of it.
How?
Because her friend, who I'll not name as she's still around, tipped off the press!

This fact alone made the press!

I thought it bizarre yet , initially, it was made out to be press intrusion. But the patient's intrusion was not brought into question!

She was very good at PR. Very, very good.
However, she absolutely adored her boys, and loved and cherished every moment with them.

The trouble with Royalty and aristocracy is that they still believe in the ''Courtly Love' type of relationships.
If you know your Chaucer, you'll know.
It's basically where you marry for power, wealth or status but you seek your heart's love discretely.
Hence , not washing your dirty linen in public, so to speak.
Indiscretions were overlooked but you stayed true to your marriage.
Diana didn't get this. So she got flamed, then cast aside.

Seriously? What a revolting comment.

Ydkiml · 21/09/2022 18:35

Wow some of these comments are disgusting. Diana was so young when she married him . She hadn’t had a loving childhood and was very naive thinking he loved her like she loved him . She was hounded constantly and must of felt so alone . She did some tremendous work and she was a genuine caring person . Loved her boys so much . Yet she is called insane , and unstable. Really ? Can you imagine being married to him / and her Camilla . He was cold and unavailable from the start . . Yes I think it was a tragic accident and unfortunately she didn’t wear her seatbelt . Them poor boys lost a great mother that night and to top it off , they couldn’t speak of her for years, none of them did , like she didn’t resist . And Diana is branded unstable!!! Thank goodness Harry now has found his voice and can finally share his feelings . Both boys will make Diana , the peoples princess very proud

BMW6 · 21/09/2022 19:12
  1. No-one has made "dishusting" remarks about Diana. Quote them please.
  1. A "genuine caring person" who made the lives of the women (plural) married to the men she pursued He'll- and their children too.
  1. Throwing yourself down the stairs in front of a very old lady (queen mum) are not the actions of a stable person. Nor for that matter a kind and caring one.
  1. Making up a story about your children's nanny being impregnated by your husband and having an abortion really is disgusting, or the actions of a very unstable person. Which do you think?

I can go on if you want.

WimpoleHat · 21/09/2022 19:13

She did some tremendous work and she was a genuine caring person . Loved her boys so much . Yet she is called insane , and unstable

All of those things can be simultaneously true, though. She can have loved her kids and done good work for charity…..and also have had serious mental health problems which caused her to behave erratically. People aren’t black and white. That’s true for everyone. Holding some as “saints” and some as “sinners” is both unrealistic and unhelpful. And you never - never - know what goes on in other people’s relationships. You can have two absolutely marvellous people, who are a bloody disaster as a couple and bring out the absolute worst in each other. And that’s just an unhappy marriage.

soulinablackberrypie · 21/09/2022 22:23

I've never heard a rumour that Charles had her killed before. At the time, there was some speculation that Prince Philip might have had something to do with it, but I don't think it was anything more than the imagination of a few conspiracy theorists. Sadly, the reason she died was a mixture of the drunk chauffeur and the pursuit by photographers, who she had always wavered between encouraging and avoiding.

I was not a big fan of her, but I was sad for her children and siblings when she died. But I really couldn't understand the extent of public grief.

I'd like to think that lessons were learned about the danger of interfering in who people want to marry.

KimberleyClark · 21/09/2022 22:29

Not wearing a seatbelt was a bigger factor than the paparazzi pursuit.

Making up a story about your children's nanny being impregnated by your husband and having an abortion really is disgusting, or the actions of a very unstable person. Which do you think?

That she was duped and deceived. Which is why the BBC was ordered to pay damages to the nanny, who was caused so much distress

Martin Bashir is I think responsible for a lot of human misery

As I said up thread I don't think Diana was amazingly beautiful, Attractive certainly and she had the very best clothes ,stylists etc money could buy so she always looked glamorous but without any of the trappings she would have looked quite ordinary imo
Certainly when she got engaged however she didn't appear to have been styled ,here clothes and hair seemed quite frumpy ,something ,somebody much older might of worn?

MsTSwift · 22/09/2022 07:27

Nonsense! She was very beautiful albeit not in the weird doll clone contour straight hair ballon boobs mode that is so popular now 🙄

Apparently she’s like Bill Clinton - even those that profess to not like them reduced to slack jawed awe on actually meeting. That charisma is rare.

MissyB1 · 22/09/2022 07:57

She was naturally beautiful, as pp said she wasn’t your typical clone doll that counts as “beautiful” these days. She had her own style.

EdithWeston · 22/09/2022 08:14

There's a brilliant videoclip of Big Bad Bill, at the height of popularity during his presidency. Meeting the late Queen. Suddenly he looked like a shy child, standing awkwardly, fiddling with his hands.

I digress!

Somewhat more on topic is that the haircut Lady Diana had around the time of her engagement (and never really changed much) with layers and flicks was pretty ubiquitous back then. Every other girl at my school had it.
