To ask why you’re awake after midnight? (again)

I can’t find the old insomnia threads, so I thought I’d start a new one because I’m having a certified hell of a time falling asleep.

My brain just won’t shut up! I had a headache for roughly a month solid. Answer: it turns out I was severely deficient in everything. I’ve been on prescription-grade iron, potassium, vitamin D, and calcium since last Thursday and I almost have energy for the first time in months. But it’s enough energy to: make my pain even more noticeable, make me realize I hate the life I’m stuck in, and keep me from sleeping.

Why are you awake? Worry? Illness? Other people? Work?

@Myfridgeisnoisy Wow! I always think foster carers are amazing. I’m sure it must hurt to let that baby go, but you’ve done a great, great thing to give them love and security when they needed it the most. All the papers show that this is the period when not having a secure attachment could have affected them for life and instead, there you were, answering every cry, loving them, making them feel secure. You saved their life. I know that doesn’t make this baby leaving hurt less, but… you’ve done a beautiful thing. Anyway, I hope gradually you’ll feel a little less sadness.

@BurntoutPanda I’m sorry work is so scary right now! No me should have to feel like that, and yet, you’re not the only person. Far from it. There are so many people getting up, going through the motions, and yet totally overwhelmed by how stressful their jobs have become, how all of it just seems endlessly thankless and heavy. Good luck. I hope maybe you can get some sleep, and then sleep will be the beginning, and once you have the sleep, maybe you can start looking at work, slowing peeling back the layers of how it got this bad and if anything can make it better for you.

@Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas Say no more!

@DrAddisonForbesMontgomery Sometimes it can be really hard to tell. If you’ve had a really particular pain for a week, and you can describe its exact quality (sharp, stabbing, burning) and its exact location (lower right abdomen, just below left breast, etc) then it’s not a bad idea to get it checked out. It most likely will still be nothing serious, but it’s hard to have peace of mind when you’re really hurting. Who could? So maybe do try to get a GP appointment if possible.

I have chronic insomnia.
I also have long term ADHD, anxiety, OCD

My brain sometimes just doesn't want to stfu.

PopGoesBang · 20/09/2022 04:21

@5YearsLeft 🤣 maybe after sleep that game wouldn't be so bad...

Goldendoodlemum · 20/09/2022 04:22

I feel awful. Have been laying in bed awake since 1am drenched in sweat and feel like my head is about to explode. Gave in at 3.30 and came downstairs and I think that is me up for the day now.

5YearsLeft · 20/09/2022 04:23

@Jenasaurus I’m so sorry! What a terrible fear to have to try to live with. I don’t know if you’ve tried all the normal things that might help with this (therapy, medication), maybe talk to your GP and see what they recommend? I have no idea how much sleep you’re getting, but living perpetually sleep-deprived would and does have a really detrimental effect on anyone. We all need a certain amount of sleep to function, and you deserve rest.

@madasawethen Oh gosh. That’s a lot to try to carry when your body just wishes it could sleep. I’m so sorry you can’t. Life can be such an unfair arsehole sometimes. I wish I had the magic key to making brains stfu but I don’t either. Good luck; I hope you can find even a tiny sliver of quiet in all the noise.

@Goldendoodlemum Oh no! I’m so sorry youre feeling so horrible. I can definitely understand why you want to give up on sleeping for tonight. I hope you feel a bit better as the day goes on, and maybe you even find you’re able to take a nap this afternoon.

@WhoAre It’s enough to drive you craaaaazy if you let it…

@55YearsLeft they think its gallstones, but it started over a week ago & im now wondering how long I should feel like this or if there's something else going on. The painkillers usually knock me out but even they don't seem to be working tonight.

I hope everyone manages to get some rest soon Flowers

GarlicCrackers · 20/09/2022 04:33

I wake-up every night at this time for a pregnancy, coincidentally also the time that that this baby decides to beat me up internally. She's one active little demon, I swear on my cats life she's just punched me in the vagina and belly button simultaneously.

GarlicCrackers · 20/09/2022 04:34

I missed a word out, "wee" . Only 21 weeks pregnant and my mind has already gone

FreezyFreezy · 20/09/2022 04:48

I have a trapped wind bubble that makes me feel like I want to have a massive burp! I can't lay down comfortably so have got up and taken some deflatines and am now drinking a cup of jasmine tea.

pollyglot · 20/09/2022 04:54

I was awake until 4 am NZ time because DH, ex Royal Navy, didn't want to miss a minute of the Queen's farewell. And of course a wee dram of the uisge-beatha to bid godspeed to a gracious lady.

5YearsLeft · 20/09/2022 05:01

@DrAddisonForbesMontgomery Can I ask what you’re eating? With the gallbladder, if it’s upset, if you’ve had an attack, or you have gallstones, fat can trigger it. People think that means a McDonald’s or a bunch of sweeties, but it’s much less than that. It’s even just something like a portion of homemade lasagne, or oven chips. Unless you haven’t eaten at all and you’re in a lot of pain. But I’d say look at what you’re eating, and try to stay under 10g of fat per meal for a week, if they’ve said it’s your gallbladder. That’s less than what’s in one portion of most oven chips or what most people have for one serving of cheese. If you’re in SERIOUS pain, try to keep it under 5g of fat per meal. Note: this is NOT for weight loss. It’s a temporary diet for pain reduction. You only have to do it for a few days to see if it helps with your pain. And I’m not saying to pay attention to any other nutrient. You may end up eating a lot of bread that doesn’t have fats, and lose no weight, or veg that doesn’t have fats, and maybe you’ll lose a small amount of weight. But PLEASE do not think about this as weight loss. The point is just that eating fat causes your gallbladder to dump a bunch of bile (to break down the fat) and yours is not doing that correctly right now, which is why you need to spend a few days on a low fat diet and see if it helps with the pain. If it doesn’t, you won’t have lost anything. I actually have to live on a low fat diet, because my gallbladder is dysfunctional but I’m not healthy enough to have surgery to remove it. But if I eat too much fat, it’ll just start dumping and dumping and dumping bile into my stomach and I’ll vomit for hours. So, tragedy: I’m going to die without ever having another McDonald’s. Sigh. Don’t cry for me, Argentina. Since you already have gallstones, I would really recommend trying to eat meals with 5g of fat or less for a few days and see if it makes any difference in the pain.

@GarlicCrackers I mean, that IS pretty impressive! Maybe she’ll be a gymnast!

No it means she's going to be as annoying as her father who's.maturity levels are around the age of 13. He likes to try to stick his finger up my nose.

awwbiscuits · 20/09/2022 05:23

Feeding my 2 week old baby. And about to get vommed on.

madasawethen · 20/09/2022 05:24

@5YearsLeft
Thank you.
I have a toolbox of techniques plus medicine and sometimes they work.
I've learned acceptance for times it doesn't.

MaryShelley1818 · 20/09/2022 05:27

I've been awake since 3am...bed sharing with a very snotty 19mth old DD.

5YearsLeft · 20/09/2022 05:28

@GarlicCrackers Oh, well, in that case, there’s no hope. Maybe start making her vests that say things like, “Pull my finger”?

@awwbiscuits Ah yes, nothing like the peace before the voming.

@madasawethen Damn. It all sounds incredibly hard. I hope you get some rest, even if you can’t get some sleep.

Ok, I’m going to try to rest here, even if I can’t manage to get any sleep at this point. Night, all!

Night @5YearsLeft and thank you for boosting all our spirits tonight

Dinosauraddict · 20/09/2022 05:57

@DrAddisonForbesMontgomery - when I had gallbladder attacks the pain was genuinely worse than childbirth! I feel for you.

etchysketchy88 · 20/09/2022 06:07

I'm up because I'm pissed off with DH.

He's one exam and writing up a few case studies away from qualifying In January. Has he looked up when he needs to apply for the exam in December? Has he fuck. Has he written up the case studies so he is allowed to apply for the exam in December? Has he fuck. Has he chased his supervisor to update her details in the governing bodies website so it's correct for the exam? Has he fuck.

It's only because I randomly thought we should have an exam date by now (so I can book holiday to ferry him to said exam because he doesn't drive) that he bothered to check. Yep he needs to write up 50 case studies, send in a verification from his supervisor to say it's done, get her to change her details on the website and arrange a practice visit in under 10 days just to be allowed to apply for the winter exam in time!!! So it's run around like a mad chicken getting this shit done (when we actually booked to go on holiday for 5 days this week!) or he delays qualifying for another 6 months. Already postponed due to covid. This means no pay rise for another 6 months which means I have to keep working overtime to afford energy bills and get the drainage fixed.

Quite frankly, I'm pissed off and now can't sleep. Twat.

Ah! @LivMumsnet I'm really pleased.
It was helpful to me during the night, & I cant be the only one as it was super supportive. I must have passed out at about 5am, looked back this am, saw it had been zapped & wondered what happened. Glad it can stay. Thank you xxx
