Whole families going food shopping

Just came back from food shopping, there were a couple of young families in there, one in particular, the mum was pushing the trolley, her two young children walking near her and the dad was following with a pram and carrying another toddler.

Surely it would be easier for just mum to go and do the food shop, or just dad? Why bring all those children plus pram? I can't think of anything worse. Both mum and dad looked stressed.

We do this occasionally. However we live 40 mins from a big shop so it really is a day out for us. We'll go the cafe and go somewhere else afterwards, usually the park. My children enjoy it and help put items in the trolley. The big one tries to add up prices and the little one tries to name everything. I had no idea it was frowned upon. 😆

Mind your business springs to mind

safetyfreak · 18/09/2022 17:24

We go shopping together with our baby, did not realise it annoys some people?

Prinnny · 18/09/2022 17:24

Are people stupid or are the purposely misinterpreting the thread?!

Its not about children not being wanted in shops it’s about whole families who decide to pitch up to Asda for the afternoon out!

I work in a school, and for some kids all they do at the weekend is go to food shopping as there is no money for anything else.

Being skint is really not a reason to have nothing to do outside of the house. Libraries, parks, playgrounds, beaches, urban farms, picnics, Lego clubs, community centres, scooter and bike rides, kite flying, conker collecting, blackberry picking, museums, woods, geocaching, art galleries, hikes, lakes, bird sanctuary, wetlands, meeting friends, parkrun, visit local street art trails/sculptures etc

user375242 · 18/09/2022 17:27

What winds me up even more than this is when whole families sit in the waiting room of hospitals and doctors. I don't know why these places allow it, it's so inappropriate.

You still need money to get there. To have shoes and coats for the weather.

DontLoseYourFightKid · 18/09/2022 17:27

I always take my son food shopping with me. He’s autistic and because of this we very rarely leave the house, but for some reason a supermarket is one of the very few places he will tolerate going to. Sorry for being such an inconvenience to you all.

Happyher · 18/09/2022 17:28

Maybe they’re trying to save fuel by not being in the house

Lavenderflower · 18/09/2022 17:29

For some families it is a day out.

With everyone chucking stuff in the trolley it will cost more.

It’s not, not really. It’s a few people who are oddly wound up by the sight of other people going about their business in a way that they wouldn’t 🤷‍♀️

I think people who get annoyed to the level on this thread are the minority irl. I wouldn't worry about it, you don't need an excuse to go shopping as a family. If it annoys other people, let them stew/worry about it, not your problem.

Sleeplessinstockport · 18/09/2022 17:33

Because we usually go on the to ornfrom somewhere else and the baby hates the car seat so will get taken inside then the middlechild wants to come to choose a snack then the eldest decides he wants something but doesn't know what until he sees it then the dh comes in to help make it a quicker.
My older two are also learning to cook so I will get them to choose ingredients etc..and lastly because we bloody well want to!

Libraries have the jobcentre in and the druggies come in on a Saturday park's drug needles, playgrounds arnt they the same thing? Beaches three mile drive urban farm? Nothing local, picnics you need food for, lego clubs none, community centres closed, scooters etc you need money to buy them, kite flying you need a hill for or at least a decent breeze, conker collecting that's down by asda, blackberry picking the drunks piss on them for the most part, museums the local one charges etc etc etc it goes on and on but there are barriers to the simplist of things usually money the supermarket has free fruit (ours is back) heat gets the kids out the house for a bit

Isaidnoalready · 18/09/2022 17:36

Three hour drive not mile 🙃

InsomniacVampire · 18/09/2022 17:37

"People do things differently to me, I'm baffled"- sums up so many threads around here.

Am8 · 18/09/2022 17:39

Not read the whole thread but I have three kids (now older) and we did the weekly shop together. We always did a "collection and chore day", we would do a sweep of everything we needed to collect for all the family, all food/clothing/miscellaneous - i.e. shoes or stationary or prescriptions or haircuts etc). It was often easier if everyone was there. And the main 3 reasons we did them all as a family was

  1. To spend time together (we would do something fun in the middle of the day)
  2. To get the kids used to how they should behave in different environments and to learn more about how the world worked) and the biggest reason was always
  3. To knacker them out. It was usually a Saturday and all in bed nice and early on a Saturday night was bliss.

I still miss those Saturday nights a bit, days like that instilled tiredness like nothing else did, and we had a lot of laughs. Just never in the middle of sainsburys!

Isaidnoalready · 18/09/2022 17:42

Fwiw I try not to take my kids shopping but when I was with my ex husband he refused to allow me to shop alone so we had too he used to take them on a Sunday after we split up but then he found out I was using that time to do the shopping and he would call constantly demanding I pick the children up immediately claiming they wanted to come home so I had to take them shopping I changed jobs so I could do it while they were at school he caused trouble other ways I don't do online shopping its cheaper if I don't and honestly why should I bow to the maniac

Heathershimmerwasmyshade · 18/09/2022 17:47

of course I don’t begrudge single parents who have no choice but today when people knew supermarkets where going to be heaving, whole families taking up whole isles. It’s annoying and no need. Why dosent one parent sit in the car with the kids or stay at home, while the other parent goes? If you see it as an educational trip for the toddler, take them when it’s quiet. Today I witnessed mum with shopping trolley, crying child in it. Dad with a pram, two adult children and a toddler with a small trolley. It may look cute to you with the small trolley, but it’s annoying. Plus yes, they had a car.

MyneighbourisTotoro · 18/09/2022 17:49

I do the shop with my parents usually to save on fuel, in the holidays my kids have to join me so there ends up being 5 of us but two trolleys.
We also pop to the shop as a family if we are planning on a bbq or get together or sorting food out after a day out as it’s easier to know what everyone would like.

sicklycolleague · 18/09/2022 17:50

Used to do this with parents when I was younger, but actually, now in my late 20s and when I visit my parents we often go to the supermarket together still

Countdown2023 · 18/09/2022 17:51

The absolute worse is Christmas shopping when men come along to help the ‘little lady’ aka wife. The ‘Christmas/special occasions’ shoppers need to be either left in the car or better still at home! They clutter up the aisles, don’t know where anything is, suddenly change trolley direction and have no bloody idea about queue etiquette!

GeorgiaGirl52 · 18/09/2022 17:54

gogohmm · 18/09/2022 15:15

Why not? Supermarkets are an activity for children, mine learned to read, count etc. kids like being part of everyday life

I took mine every Friday afternoon. We split the list into three parts. They collected the cans, bottles, and packages while I chose fresh fruits, meats, etc. We didn't play "hide and seek" and we finished and were out 3 times faster than I would have on my own. Gradually it got to the point where they could do the shopping on their own. By the time they were sixteen and had driving permits, they could meal plan, shop and cook on their own.

bloodyplanes · 18/09/2022 17:56

I don't understand why anyone would take kids shopping unless they have to. It's annoying trying to manoeuvre round them but not something i can get het up about. However the ones that aimlessly wonder round while their children feral brats run around all over the place, pull things off the shelves and scream and shout make me want to explode with irritation!
