To ask how not to stink in the morning?

Thealarmhasgoneoffagain · 17/09/2022 09:07

Name changed.

I shower every morning, use deodorant, clean clothes etc. I don't smell during the day.

I wear clean, loose pjs each night. Generally thinish cotton. But oh my, when I wake up, I REEK between my legs! Sometimes I do get hot/sweaty at night (I wake up drenched sometimes) so I know why on those days but other days, like last night I sleep normally, wake up fine and just stink. It's not BV.

It doesn't make much difference if I shower before bed. Other people are still able to smell it in the morning.

I've tried knickers/no knickers and wearing panty liners but that makes no difference either.

Help! I'm due to share a room with a friend in a few weeks.

I seem to be in a minority here, but I find a bath is the only way for me to be clean! Immersed in plain water. Also how about a Nightie instead of Jim jams ? Air can circulate well . pyjama bottoms will trap your vag ! leading to unpleasant odours.Bedrooms should be cool and make sure bedding not too thick.

PolkaDotMankini · 17/09/2022 14:39

It sounds daft, but a natural yoghurt 'mask' on your lady bits might help if you've unbalanced the biome. Literally just slap on a small pot of natural yoghurt for half an hour one evening and then wash it off with plain water. Never wash your bits with soap.

My friend had her husband being able to smell turns out she had left a tampon stuck up there for a while. She was lucky no TSS

I had a friend do this too; the doctor fished it out.

whoruntheworldgirls · 17/09/2022 15:20

Antibacterial soap? I've noticed that helps with sweat smells

You're the first person I've ever heard refer to it as a Mary outside of my family 😲 we called it that too growing up and I thought my family were just crazy 🤣

I call it a hairy Mary 🤣

If I eat fish, the next morning I smell of fish. It only happens when I eat fish. I only eat fish now when I know I am not at work the next day! Could yours be food related?

Top tip to prevent this - take a cranberry capsule after you’ve eaten! I don’t know how it works, but it does.

Summerslam · 17/09/2022 16:16

Are you sure you actually stink? Has someone told you this? If you wash yourself regularly then you shouldn't smell bad after a night's sleep. Is it after having sex? Or every single morning regardless?

Get checked out by your GP, if there really is a bad smell, it's a sign that something somewhere is wrong.

Spray anti perspirant around tops of thighs works for me. Some mners will be horrified but since I've been peri this has been life changing for me.

Rosesandstars · 17/09/2022 17:13

Try showering and using soap (not shower gel) immediately before bed and wearing cotton PJs.

I agree with this. And I don't use any soap directly in that area but find that a swish around with the bath water (that will have some soap in it as I use bar soap on the rest of my body) is enough, then drying really thoroughly.

Like a PP I produce a lot of discharge, way more than I used to pre-kids so have to use pantyliners but you may just be over-washing/using harsh soap?

Thealarmhasgoneoffagain · 17/09/2022 18:04

We called it an Auntie Mary growing up. Thing is, I did actually have an Auntie Mary. Although she wasn't really my auntie. My real Auntie was called May but we don't talk about her... 🤣

I agree, I have a bath and then Mitchum and lynx 48hr perfume. 😂

Thealarmhasgoneoffagain · 17/09/2022 18:37

Thanks for all the replies. I'll have a proper read through.

What does it smell like? It's difficult to say. It's the normal musky/sweaty/early morning smell mixed with... stagnant water maybe? It isn't nice and it's more than just needing a shower. It's very strong so if I sit with my legs open I can smell it or if I bend down to pick something up I can smell it. Only in the morning before I shower though. The rest of the time it's normal.

I love baths but sometimes after getting out, despite cleaning properly my underarms smell. I think baths make me sweat. 🤣

Definately not BV. I've had that before and it smelt ddifferent. I also don't get this smell during the day. Although TBH the BV didn't smell typically "fishy". It smelt like something dead. Oh god, no wonder no one wants to go near the stinky thing!

I don't use tampons so nothing has been lost.

I use a bar of soap outside in the shower every morning. I used to use a clean flannel each shower too so I'll go back to that.

Sometimes there is a little smell of wee but not always. I am working on my pelvic floor. It's not just wee iyswim though.

It doesn't smell like poo and there are no signs of that if that is what people mean by "leaking". Would I get that during the day too if it was?

I can get quite a bit of discharge sometimes so sometimes my pjs are wet (it doesn't smell like wee) but that doesn't seem to affect the smell.

I can try a nightie I guess. I do like my pjs though!

It's impossible to get to my GPs at the moment.

I have some sort of psoriasis or something on the inside of my thighs (not smelly) so don't want to be adding lots of products around the area.

Diet wise - water obsessed veggie who doesn't drink or smoke (and is always fun at parties! 🤣). Too much sugar though.

The fungal thing is interesting though. I get athletes foot, am trying to treat a fingernail infection, have the psoriasis thing on my thighs and a weird itchy patch of skin on my ankle. I do get thrush sometimes. I eat waaaay too much sugar. Hmm. Further investigation required.

It could be that you have an allergy to soap or washing powder. Try douching just with water before going to bed any again in the morning using no soap or body wash etc. it seems counter productive but it isn’t. Good luck

IcyBlonde15 · 17/09/2022 19:04

What type of smell is it? If it is an unpleasant odour from downstairs it can be an upset ph balance. Definitely see a doctor they can help. If it is more BO from sweating, see a doctor as well. There are many treatments to help excessive sweating.

IcyBlonde15 · 17/09/2022 19:05

Also, from personal experience, if you are washing down there with soaps/scented products to try and make it smell nicer STOP! I did this and it made it much worse and it was because it upset the ph. Wash with very mild soap or just plain water

Thanks for the tip 🥴

Winter2020 · 17/09/2022 19:21

Hi OP -
after a quick google
Psoriosis is considered a risk factor for diabetes and vice versa, poorly controlled diabetes results in increased and more severe yeast infections.

Suggest you get a diabetes screening as part of ruling things out.

...from the dairy

Mummysharkargggggggg · 17/09/2022 19:27

If I've eaten strong smelling food (Tina or salmon especially) I swear I can smell it on my fudge the next morning 😳
If I know I'm on a promise 🤣 or sharing a room I avoid anything smelly going in my mouth for a few days 🤷‍♀️

CatchersAndDreams · 17/09/2022 19:34

Get some bv pesseries to take with you, they reset your ph levels and you won't have zero smell in the morning.

MadCattery · 17/09/2022 19:35

OMG! I was going to suggest this! I live in the US and didn't know if UK had it. The woman who developed it was becoming an OB/Gyn and said so many women came in with complaints of odors and were mistakenly told it was BV. She had her sister test it and found she had developed a real miracle product, safe for lady parts. I was planning on ordering it myself, just for my armpits. Read the story. I have not tried it. don't have a financial interest, don't know anyone involved, but have heard it is a terrific product.

Are you washing properly. I know that sounds a bit condescending (I don’t mean it that way). I think back to covid and having to wash our hands for 20 secs and thinking some people don’t scrub there other bits as long as that….
Do you use anything to wash with? Antibacterial soap? Sponge?
