Is the real thing or a replica?

Obviously if someone attempted an elaborate heist to steal it they'd have all the guard and police on them in a split second, im just really curious!

Something I learned today - the Imperial State Crown has never been appraised or insured, but it’s estimated to be worth £3-5 billion. It’s probably the most recognisable and valuable piece of jewellery in the world.

I’m slightly nervous that it’s not insured!

That’s absolutely fucking insane! For a hat?! We should sell it.

A lot of valuable artworks in museums aren’t insured either. They’ll have insurance when they travel somewhere else on loan but often museums won’t have any insurance that covers damage on their own property.

I came to the conclusion that the crown is probably sewn to the pillow with some sort of super strong clear filament then the pillow is somehow clamped/fixed to the royal standard or to the coffin through it.

I assume the placing and removing of the crown and/or pillow is done 'behind the scenes'?

Don’t be such a philistine!
Economy and history are cyclical, there will always be hard times and good times, we can’t sell off culture and heritage every time there’s a dark cloud on the horizon. Plus they don’t belong to just one generation - others passed it onto ours, we do the same to the next ones.

Who are we passing it on to? If it’s publicly owned, shouldn’t the public be able to wear it? Or at least allow more than one person to wear it at very specific times? I don’t think we’d miss it if it meant a 5 billion top-up to the economy.

ElizabethBest · 16/09/2022 17:12

It's definitely real. Kate has been known to wear a replica ring so as not to damage hers whilst doing sports and gardening and things. I do the same, tbh!

Notonyerwelly · 16/09/2022 17:19

Is that the crown with the stolen diamonds from India / Pakistan/Afghanistan?Or is this one pilfered from some other ex colony ?
The one beside the coffin is a fake . And no the Queen is not in the coffin. ( Laughing at the numpties who are pretending that they have some inside knowledge of the Royal Family on here ).

When it was on the gun carriage I couldn't help wondering what if a drone with some grabbers on it zoomed down and snatched it, or a passing Eagle took a fancy to it and made off with it.
Hubby's response: don't be so bloody daft 🤣

That's exactly what I was thinking!

FirewomanSam · 16/09/2022 17:21

I have a relative who is convinced all the paintings by famous artists in museums and galleries must be replicas because it would be far too risky to put the real things on display. In reality of course it would be far more faff to make replicas of everything and keep the originals in some kind of secret secure storage! Museums and heritage organisations are well versed in keeping the ‘real’ stuff safe and the crown is no different. There’s SO much security around it that it just wouldn’t be possible to even get near it, let alone steal it.

Plus, say it was a replica and it did get stolen in a presumably very high-profile theft, they can hardly stay ‘don’t worry everyone, that was just a fake, we fooled everyone who walked past it, we’ve got the real thing safe here.’ That would cause an outcry!

This is a Robbery on Netflix is basically this, it’s about an art heist - the paintings have never resurfaced and they doubt they’ve even been sold because they’re so recognisable. It was fascinating.

I thought the same as your husband but curiosity got the better of me and I had to Google it. The crown weighs 2.2lb and a female eagle can apparently lift 2.5lb so this is actually a very real possibility that they clearly didn’t think of. Should have had you on the security team.

Whereas you do have inside knowledge on the Royal Family, thus your knowing that the Queen isn’t in the coffin and the crown is fake?

JaneJeffer · 16/09/2022 17:34

Damn I'm raging this didn't happen now!

GiantCheeseMonster · 16/09/2022 17:34

Why would the Queen be in a plain shroud?! Normal humans are buried in one of their nice outfits. I’m sure she is the same. One of her lovely dresses I’m sure. And of course she’s in there. The security is massive - you’d be shot dead before you had chance to get a finger on that crown. They had snipers on the roofs of all the buildings during the procession and they will again for the funeral. The Queen is ironically much safer from attack in death than she was in life.

ChimChimeny · 16/09/2022 17:39

@FirewomanSam did go also google how much a magpie can carry? I imagine there's a few around with their beady eye on it 😁

Yes, I’d rather an eagle made off with it than have it sold.

RubyJam · 16/09/2022 17:43

Would snipers actually shoot at people ?
I wonder what the guidelines are for protection ? Like if someone runs towards the king etc

There must be so much prep going on behind the scenes

I think it’s the real crown , nobody could get near it anyway

7Worfs · 16/09/2022 17:45

Someone nearly got sniped - he ran towards Charles’ car. The cut off probably would have been making contact with the car.

ManagementPlan · 16/09/2022 17:45

I thought about this with all the theories about whether or not there's a body in there. I'm pretty sure that if they're risking the crown there'll be a real body too.

7Worfs · 16/09/2022 17:47

The Queen planned a lot of it and I think would have been out of character and her faith to put her people through the rigmarole and not actually be there.

I’m very fond of the pelicans who live by the lake in St James’s Park. I wouldn’t put it past them to have at least thought about a quick flap, grab and ‘whoops what’s that in my bill’ - ransom set at fish equivalent weight.

You are laughing at people and calling them numpties, whilst telling us the crown isn't real and the Queen isn't in the coffin?

i think so, it was definitely a well- meaning fan.

the pelicans - I’ve seen them swallow whole live pigeons, it’s not something I’ll forget in a hurry
