To wonder if the crown in the coffin...

Is the real thing or a replica?

Obviously if someone attempted an elaborate heist to steal it they'd have all the guard and police on them in a split second, im just really curious!

If you stole it, how would you sell it?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/09/2022 14:42

Duct tape is my guess.

😀

Celticandco · 16/09/2022 14:52

I'd love to see someone try to steal it, they'd last about 3 seconds

BasiliskStare The coffin was especially made about 30 years ago I think. It has an anchor system for the crown.

“The brass handles and other fitments, which include clasps to hold the Imperial State Crown, orb and sceptre in place when they are placed on the coffin for the lying in state, are thought to have been made by the Birmingham foundry Newman Brothers, which is no longer in business.”

The former Newman Brothers factory in Birmingham is now preserved as a heritage attraction and well worth a visit (I went earlier this year on a whim and was surprised by how good it was). Although it's now called Coffin Works they actually made high-end brassware for coffins and not the coffins themselves, so it's not macabre.

I highly recommend the guided visit. It costs only slightly more than the unguided visit and is very informative. I learnt far more than if I'd just wandered around by myself.

It's definitely real, and it's beautiful! She also has a golden orb and sceptre there too. If you saw the number of armed guards around the lying in state you'd not even consider attempting a heist! I wondered how they kept it balanced on top of the coffin. It must have been tied to that cushion somehow? And the cushion attached to the coffin somehow too.

Georgeskitchen · 16/09/2022 14:57

When it was on the gun carriage I couldn't help wondering what if a drone with some grabbers on it zoomed down and snatched it, or a passing Eagle took a fancy to it and made off with it.
Hubby's response: don't be so bloody daft 🤣

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 16/09/2022 14:59

The crown is worth so much as to be worthless. If it was stolen what could you do with it? And no insurer could insure it, I wouldn't think. It's literally 'priceless'.

thereisonlyoneofme · 16/09/2022 15:00

Surely it would be held on with blue tack

Blackopal · 16/09/2022 15:03

Assume pp means the Culinan diamond that some feel should be returned to South Africa

LoobyDop · 16/09/2022 15:07

If I was in charge of lying in state etc, it would very definitely be an empty exact copy of the coffin on display, and the real, occupied one would be safely locked up in a nice temperature-controlled morgue under constant surveillance.

Pansypotter123 · 16/09/2022 15:10

All those saying that it isn't Her Late Majesty in the coffin - if that were the case then surely her children and grand children would not be going to take part in the vigil at Westminster Hall?

Why bother do that? The coffin is lined with lead and sealed so that it's air-tight. No need for refrigeration. And it has a constant security presence where it is.

Why would you keep it secretly elsewhere until the funeral? Might as well take it straight to the vault at Windsor and have a replica throughout.

Velcro is the answer!

BMW6 · 16/09/2022 15:58

I keep wondering what she's wearing. A plain linen burial shroud? An evening dress? Or her favourite at home tweed skirt and Cardigan.

She'll have certainly left exact instructions, or us thereca protocol?

My money is on glue dots.

Ryder68 · 16/09/2022 16:06

I like to think of her lying there in a favourite old tweed skirt and cardigan!

I expect she is in a plain shroud though.

I was wondering, did the coffin travel with her these last years, just in case?

Especially if it had special fittings for her crown, etc., it wasn't purchased off the rack in Aberdeen.

Did it move from place to place with the Queen?

Ah now I find this interesting. Having been watching to when the guard fell I am assuming that none of the ones on the actual steps to the coffin (sorry I don’t know any of the proper terminology) wouldn’t be much use in an emergency due to legs tiring, blood pressure etc, plus they’re looking down and not around them. I’ve seen other people, some of them looking in their 50s or thereabouts guiding people, telling them when to stop etc. So are there more guards allowed to walk and watch and stay alert? How does it all work practically?

TokyoTen · 16/09/2022 16:18

Look no nails might be involved.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 16/09/2022 16:41

It looked pretty real to me when I viewed the Lying in State yesterday.

Wonnle · 16/09/2022 16:48

But how do you know the real one isn't a snide ?

Passing eagle 😂

Me and a friend of mine used to make up elaborate plans for heists after seeing that Damien Hirst bejewelled skull at the tate modern. Our plan for that involved a team of trained rats

This is a good point, it would have to be stripped down and melted, with the metal and stones sold separately, and you'd be left with the stones that are too unique to sell.
