My bank has been down all night and all morning until now. Cannot access the app and they aren't able to credit any payments . Cards aren't working either. I literally have no money to buy a darn thing and need bread and baby milk etc
It's 2022 ffs!

Oh I got in now!

I do have other accounts thankfully, but I usually transfer out of my main account to use them. Might have to rethink this strategy!

I agree with you which is why I always have spare cash for emergencies.

Rant away, many think its ridiculous.

I agree. Yet you still see posts on MN from supercilious posters who think those of us who always carry a little cash are living in the dark ages (old gimmer here).

Cognacsoft · 15/09/2022 16:01

Have a thought for the elderly.
My df doesn't have a smartphone, can't get to a branch and although he has ample money in his account the local supermarket regularly decline his card and we cannot work out why.
I suspect its because he doesn't have 2 step authentication.
I have to ensure he has cash because otherwise he'd starve some weeks.

Have you contacted his bank to ask them why this keeps happening?

Crinkle77 · 15/09/2022 16:05

It's Halifax and MBNA - it's on their twitter. They're part of the same group. It's happening more and more. TSB is constantly going down. Last week there was issues with paying my Tesco credit card. The payment from my TSB debit card to tesco was declined. No issue with my debit card. Apparently the payment was approved by TSB and returned by Tesco. The guy on the phone from tesco was acting like there was no issues their end but it was the same day tesco had problems with their online shopping system and people's orders got cancelled. It obviously affected a number of their systems bug no word on social media. At least Halifax and MBNA are acknowledging it and keeping customers up to date.

EmmaH2022 · 15/09/2022 16:12

I paid a bill via Halifax browser this morning. Or I thought I did. Will check later.

Oblomov22 · 15/09/2022 16:13

It's a lesson on not being too reliant. I too have an emergency £20 in my purse. I have a debit card, a spare debit card to another account and 2 credit cards. Don't rely on just one source.

I'm an old gimmer and was fine with the cashless society until the time the Natwest system went down for a while.

DP only had a NW account and a NW credit card, and he was stranded in a petrol station 20 miles away with about a teacup of gas in the tank. We were on the phone trying to work out if I could pay by phone, when his fucking PAYG phone died - thankfully after he'd said where he was, so I was able to sort it and pay for his fuel.

After that we both got credit cards from different banks, although they I realised the other day that mine ran out 2 years ago, and hasn't been replaced, probably because I never use it.

Lakie "I'm an old gimmer and was fine with the cashless society until the time the Natwest system went down for a while."

i'm baffled by this, it never occurred to you that stuff like this would happen?

Yes.
They are about to send a new card out.
Strangely I think it's the particular supermarket because today after visiting df I went to put petrol in there and my card was declined.
Fortunately I had another which was accepted.

PinkiOcelot · 15/09/2022 16:23

Yep, let’s go cashless!

RampantIvy · 15/09/2022 16:23

Are some banks worse than others for this?

Tbh, I'd never given it a thought. I always had some cash on me anyway. Back then, lots of local shops didn't like you using cards for small sums and taxis round my way didn't have card machines, so most people here (out in the sticks) carried some cash.

And I think that was possibly the first time that there was a problem that took a while to resolve.

SherwoodForest · 15/09/2022 16:30

I always have some cash in case of this, although some small shops and people such as window cleaners still want cash anyway.
The worst thing to happen to me was when Barclays went down and I was moving house. The money from the person at the bottom of the chain did not go through so my sale did not complete, though all my worldly goods were on a removal lorry when we were told this. I was homeless for a weekend.
I was told that Barclays could improve their reliability but it would be expensive so they don't do it.

listsandbudgets · 15/09/2022 16:35

And like magic..

Prompted by this thread, I jist tried to log into Barclays app to transfer some extra money into my Monzo account and..

It says I can't log in!!!

tedgran · 15/09/2022 16:36

Halifax was down when I went to pay my credit card online last month. Phoned and
emailed, a charming man rang me a couple of days later, very sorry and they put £20 in my account!

cushioncovers · 15/09/2022 16:41

It's annoying yes that's why I've always got some cash at home. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think there's bigger issues going cos there was also issues at TSB when I rang to check my balance on their automated system.

Blanketpolicy · 15/09/2022 16:50

They have backup servers, back up power sources, back up networks etc etc to try to avoid these issues, but no system will ever be infallible and due to complexity of all these systems that keep them problem free to you 99.99999% of the time it means when they do hit a problem it is usually a beezer and can take a while to fix!

Anything technical you are reliant on, or is critical to you, it is prudent to have a back up plan. For banking that could be £20 emergency cash in the back of your purse, a credit card with a different provider or even family/friends you can rely on in an emergency.

workiskillingme · 15/09/2022 16:58

Still not working 🙄🙄

workiskillingme · 15/09/2022 17:01

The bank is thinkmoney
As I said the cash would have been useful for the bread milk etc but no use for paying parent pay dinners
I usually have cash but the window cleaner popped by yesterday evening so that went

This is why people bitcoin.

Everyone should get a small amount of bitcoin and learn how to use it.

ThisisCollie2022 · 15/09/2022 17:23

Had this with Halifax recently and they gave me compensation to apologise for the stress and inconvenience it caused.

Badbadbunny · 15/09/2022 17:29

BlancmanegeBunny · 15/09/2022 13:39

Unfortunately, this is far more likely to happen "in this day and age" because we are so reliant on computer systems.
30 years ago people used cards far less and carried cash.

I have more than one bank account but also carry some cash (I'm old).

lt also happened pre cards if someone lost or had their purse stolen!

wateraddict · 15/09/2022 17:38

If you need shopping, do an online order- co-op does a delivery option I think... if you have that facility nearby could a family member pay?
