My bank has been down all night and all morning until now. Cannot access the app and they aren't able to credit any payments . Cards aren't working either. I literally have no money to buy a darn thing and need bread and baby milk etc
It's 2022 ffs!

Always run to bank accounts different organisations for just this reason

Herejustforthisone · 15/09/2022 14:50

Incidentally, I’m not criticising people for having cash. It’s useful. I’m just pointing out saying ‘this is why I always keep cash in the house’ is not helpful to a woman who doesn’t have cash in the house and needs to buy formula and bread.

SatInTheCorner · 15/09/2022 14:51

Does any of your family bank with Natwest? If so they can send you cash that you.can withdraw out of most machines.

serenghetti2011 · 15/09/2022 14:51

I’ve got plenty cash at home just in case, def better to be a wee bit careful and spread money about, I’ve 2 separate bank accounts with money in to make sure I can use one if I can’t use the other. Def not rolling in it either. Hope you can find a solution op, frustrating

Surtsey · 15/09/2022 14:51

We always have a couple of hundred in cash tucked away in case of sudden emergencies, so perhaps that is something you could consider going forward.

A cash machine once sucked up my card on the first day of a fortnight's holiday and I had to rely entirely on the goodwill of friends lending me money. I've never used a cashpoint since.

Herejustforthisone · 15/09/2022 14:34

Everyone saying ‘this is why I always keep some cash in the house’ are not being terribly helpful, just appear boastful about their own financial aplomb.

I never have cash because the advent of technology in banking means not only do I never venture near a cash point, I’m not sure I could recall my PIN if I did.

It's not boastful. Your cash is your cash, whether it's in the bank and you can't get at it, or it's in a drawer in the kitchen and you can.

Hugasauras · 15/09/2022 14:52

A bit off-topic but if you are using Apple Pay/Google Pay, they don't have the contactless limits like the cards do. I forgot my card the other day but was able to pay a £300 vet bill just with Apple Pay. Might be useful to someone sometime ...

listsandbudgets · 15/09/2022 14:56

Which bank is it OP? No one else (unless I've msised it) seems to be aware of it.

Are you sure they've not frozen your account for some reason? I had that happen to me a few years ago because they suspected a fraudulent transaction - which it was since I'd never been to Karachi let alone tried to withdraw £800 there!! It was a week before Christmas and all of a sudden I couldn't get any money!!

oldwhyno · 15/09/2022 14:56

cheque book? I'm sure the school will be understanding about the situation and still feed your kids.

what actual problems have you encountered?

Has anybody read The Handmaid's Tale? All it takes is for Them (whoever Them is Grin ) to flick a switch and you have lost your money.
Be warned, people!

A Handmaids Tale? I read an absolutely CHILLING blog about some right wing personality (can't remember if it was here or in the US) who had that (and much more) happen to them because of their conduct on social media.

I tried to search for it, but couldn't find it. If anyone has a link please post it because I would love to read it again, my jaw was on the floor at how things tumbled down so quickly (i.e. missing direct debits, going into debt, being kicked out for not being able to pay rent, etc etc)

So frustrating when things like this happen! Can you use PayPal to do a grocery order on Just Eat or similar to bypass having to use card?

Hope it’s sorted soon ☹️

DaSilvaP · 15/09/2022 15:05

You do know that there still is this thingy called cash?

Also, no one stops you from opening accounts with 2 or 3 or more banks?

People are always saying I'm mad and not living in this century. I don't do online banking or apps. Couple of weeks ago, got to the cashier to pay for the weeks shopping. Machine asked for pin number.... she said it had been doing that all morning. Ok, fine started typing pin, didn't get to finalize or press enter, when it said "card declined and blocked". This is a debit card, went to nearest cash point, fearing the worst,my card wasn't blocked. DH always keeps cash in his wallet
I remember when banks first went online about 25 years ago,and this was always happening.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 15/09/2022 15:15

You need back ups!!

get a revolut or monzo or similar with some money on it for emergencies like this.

stuffnthings · 15/09/2022 15:17

Seems to be a wider problem, some are also having problems with MBNA and also John Lewis credit card (although this is likely to be more do with the company that is the actual lender, not sure who JL's is).

stuffnthings · 15/09/2022 15:17

Both apps and logging in via a browser, I should add.

This is such a shitty post.

EveningOverRooftops · 15/09/2022 15:19

this is going to become ‘normal’.

it’s a good idea to keep a stash of cash, small notes and change, enough to buy your essentials so if you have babies enough for nappies and milk, enough for bus fares or petrol whatever you need to function for a couple of days or a sudden small emergency like an A&E trip.

i keep some cash stashed away. Minimum of £40 for an emergency hospital visit (taxi there and back plus bit extra to get snacks/drinks if it’s a long stay) and my weeks food costs at around £70.

Always keep some cash in my bag in a separate purse. Not to spend but if my card is declined for whatever reason.

this is ‘prepping’ it’s not the crazy stuff people think of it’s being prepared for a likely scenario so you don’t end up in a panic.

AspireMe · 15/09/2022 15:12

That, regardless of the views of the individuals involved, shows just how precarious we all are being so reliant on a small group of companies to manage our finances.

if the pendulum shifts it could happen to any of us and it shouldn’t happen, shouldn’t be allowed to happen.

waffless · 15/09/2022 15:35

This is what worries me about a cashless society.

Nekomata · 15/09/2022 15:37

It's helpful to say keep some cash at home because these things happen from time to time and it's better to be prepared.

There was a series called 'the most hated man on the internet' who had a revenge porn site and Anonymous did that to him.

EmmaH2022 · 15/09/2022 15:43

Also wondering which bank it is, this stuff is usually all over the media.

MarsupiIami · 15/09/2022 15:47

Ohh this is why I can't log in to the app? Excellent.
