To not want to suck snot out my child's nose?

My 8 week old has a blocked nose and I've read that lots of people suck the snot out of their babies nose. Tbh, I really don't fancy trying to pin down my baby while trying to suck snot out of her nose! Is there another way or do I have no choice? 😩

You can get a little snot suction device in boots. I had one but never used it. Not sure if safe etc but could research it.

We have a snot suction thing from boots but it's never worked. Instead I just give him a puff of nasal spray and wait for it to loosen, dribble out and wipe.

Bobbleballbags · 15/09/2022 11:50

You can get machines that suck it out. Or if your baby isn't it too much discomfort just use some baby vapour rub or similar to help clear the airways. That's all I ever used on my dd (but she'd scream her head off if I tried so much as wiping her nose with a tissue)

Kimchi cures herpes?

BuffaloCauliflower · 15/09/2022 11:51

Get a Nose Frida, you’re sucking but it goes nowhere near your mouth. Great things.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 15/09/2022 11:59

My post looks very weird now the spambot has been deleted. In all seriousness though, the little suction tool works well.

abovedecknotbelow · 15/09/2022 12:01

Sterimar baby nasal spray

We had to on docs advice. You have to very gentle.

I never did. I used snuffle babe vapour oil in a bowl of hot water in the bedroom. That or a plate of lightly peeled/crushed garlic in the bedroom. Sounds mad but it works.

rcat74 · 15/09/2022 12:05

Nose Frida is the best thing. It goes into a chamber not into your mouth.

toooldtodate · 15/09/2022 12:05

I have twins and never have I sucked snot!!!

Hugasauras · 15/09/2022 12:07

Nose Frida is amazing!!

Hugasauras · 15/09/2022 12:09

Also it's not clear from your OP, but you know when people say that they mean to use a snot sucker thing, not just your mouth, right??

Cloud9Amy · 15/09/2022 12:10

No I never wanted to suction them out either. I always just waited until the snot worked it’s way closer to the nostril and then used a wet cotton pad folded over to get them out. Gently tickling the inside of the nostril with it made her sneeze and I was able to then reach them with the pad, and the snot usually all came out in one piece (sorry for tmi). This worked well when she was a newborn and even still does at 6 months albeit that she’s more wriggly now lol.

GreenManalishi · 15/09/2022 12:10

Never have I ever sucked snot out of anyones nose. Sat in a steamy bathroom with the shower running and the olbas oil vapourising many an hour, but never sucked snot.

PinkPlantCase · 15/09/2022 12:11

You know you don’t have to do anything with the snot

Crunchymum · 15/09/2022 12:12

Buy a device to do it.

DC3 had an NG tube until she was 1 so we used the sucky device thing a lot.

Numbat2022 · 15/09/2022 12:12

You need the snot sucker. It's so satisfying and doesn't go anywhere near your mouth. (You do have to wash it out though.)

womaninatightspot · 15/09/2022 12:13

If you're bf squirt a little into her nose and it loosens and comes out.

FourTeaFallOut · 15/09/2022 12:14

Sucking the snot out sounds a lot safer than shoving objects up there.

NancyJoan · 15/09/2022 12:16

Warm wet flannel. Just go gently.

Fridaysgirl17 · 15/09/2022 12:17

I'm always used the sterimar or the Vicks saline drops & I used a bulb suction thingy, that worked best for me as was easier to hold baby & use it. My ex used to suck the snots out of our first son,no bother on him,me no I couldn't do it
