To not want to suck snot out my child's nose?

dreamer717 · 15/09/2022 11:45

My 8 week old has a blocked nose and I've read that lots of people suck the snot out of their babies nose. Tbh, I really don't fancy trying to pin down my baby while trying to suck snot out of her nose! Is there another way or do I have no choice? 😩

I have in desperate middle of the night screaming sessions.
Saline spray works well

lemmein · 15/09/2022 12:42

I seen someone do this once and honestly threw up in my mouth a bit Envy I was supervising a parent in a contact centre at the time so had to be professional but the stifled bork knacked my throat.

I mean, I love my kids.....but nope!

Cupofteaonesugar · 15/09/2022 13:41

What!!!!?! I've never heard anyone doing this in my life 😳😳😳😳😳

Vampirethriller · 15/09/2022 13:48

Snot sucker device from Boots! Amazing. Daughter is literally a snot farm and it was the only thing that helped when she was a baby. I got a humidifier as well and Klearvol capsules.

firef1y · 15/09/2022 13:59

6 children and I have never sucked their snot out. Tbh I don't think there were even snot sucker thingymibob gizmos available when the oldest 4 were babies. If their nose was completely crusty then a q-tip soaked in cooled boiled water to wipe round the outside of the nostril. But that was it

Franca123 · 15/09/2022 14:06

Baby nasal spray. Olbas oil. Humidifier.

Keroppi · 15/09/2022 14:08

I've never used those. To me it seems bad, especially if their nose is inflamed or sore which is causing the blocked nose rather than snot, if you see what I mean.

I have used a sea salt spray though which I thought was good! Plus good old vaporub/vicks

JellyfishandShells · 15/09/2022 14:10

I had a little pipette thing with a rubber bulb on the end that you pressed then put to the nose - not in. It was really safe, gentle and effective and recommended by the doctor. Assume they can still be bought.

Pixiedust1234 · 15/09/2022 14:12

I have never done this and never heard of it before.

When would you do it? Mind boggling

Popskipiekin · 15/09/2022 14:13

I used to do this all the time, with or without a nose Frieda. Suck and spit. DC had what felt like a perma cold from newborn to age 2. It felt simplest to do it myself but appreciate others find it more than a little 🤢🤣

Pollywoddles · 15/09/2022 14:18

Saline nasal drops worked a treat on my DD, didn’t have to suction even though I have a couple of different aspirators.

JustMaggie · 15/09/2022 14:18

Humidifier works really well

Franca123 · 15/09/2022 14:24

The humidifier was a bit of a relaxation for me. Realised it massively helped me when I had sinus issues.

Appleblum · 15/09/2022 14:24

Nose Frida is what you need. Worked great for both my babies.

idonotmind · 15/09/2022 14:25

Yeah you need a snot sucker

Does the trick

Welcome to parenthood!

Heartofglass12345 · 15/09/2022 14:30

Saline nasal drops also worked for my son too, it used to make him sneeze and it would come out. I couldn't be doing that either even if it doesn't go near your mouth Envy

ClottedCreamAndStrawberries · 15/09/2022 14:33

I feel 🤮 🤮

AD1996 · 15/09/2022 14:38

Get a nose frida, best thing I’ve ever bought! There’s a filter so you don’t actually suck the snot into your mouth lol.

RedHerring24 · 15/09/2022 14:42

The thought of this makes me gag. DH was given the job of snot sucker but DD hated it.
We had a Nose Frida thing where the snot goes into a chamber which does work if your baby lets you.
Otherwise a saline nasal spray helps loosen it and Snuffle rub overnight in hot water in the room helps.

Rosehugger · 15/09/2022 14:43

I never did it - wasn't even aware of it as a thing when DDs were little. Ugh!

Goldbar · 15/09/2022 14:44

As a parent, you often find yourself doing disgusting stuff you'd rather not do.

If they're snuffling so much that they're not sleeping and, amidst the screaming, you've had one hour's sleep in the last 24, it can become the least worst option. But I used one of those things where it doesn't go near your mouth.

Shoopshoopshoopshoopshoop · 15/09/2022 15:47

Just get a bulb sucker.

Also the saline nasal spray which loosens mucous and helps them sneeze it out. I found this better than the sucker TBH.

Absolutely no need for snot to go near your mouth.

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 15/09/2022 15:53

We had a battery operated snot sucker, DH used to call it Doctor Who's more disgusting sonic screwdriver Grin Quite gentle but did the job.

I looked at the nose Frida but didn't even want to take that chance in case the chamber thing didn't work! We also had snufflebabe ointment, and those plug in things for the night.

So did I. Didn’t bother me one bit. My mother did it to me as well.
The only down side was that I would then inevitably get a cold a couple of days later.
