Should people pare back their Christmas celebrations this year?

I saw a comment on social media, I can't remember their exact words but it was effectively suggesting that people should 'pare back' their celebrations at Christmas this year due to the Queen's passing.

I'm not really sure I understood their reasoning, or what they meant by paring back? I appreciate that it's been a very sad time and will be only have been a few months after her death and that Christmas can magnify feelings of loss. For many it's also going to feel extremely poignant seeing the King give a speech on Christmas day and not his mother, but surely it is right that life goes on?

I'm sure the last thing she would want is families not spending time together and celebrating Christmas and having fun, especially after the last two years which were so incredibly disrupted.

IABU - Yes, people should pare back their Christmas celebrations to an extent this year in respect to the Queen's passing.

IANBU - No, people shouldn't feel the need to pare back their Christmas celebrations this year - the Queen's passing is sad for many people, but life must go on.

In a few months you will be able to move from wearing black to a soft grey

But wait til I tell you to do that

HashtagShitShop · 15/09/2022 17:44

People should do what they want to do within their means as they're able to in this current time. Sod what anyone else thinks.

Does the person who suggested it really think the royals will be at home all "aww. The poor people aren't having Christmas in consideration of us?" 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

gatehouseoffleet · 15/09/2022 17:45

I would have thought it would depend on your finances.

I expect people to tone down the Christmas lights though, although perhaps they are not that expensive to run even with the price rises.

I love the toffee pennies!
A tin of roses with just the nut one in would be more appropriate for the sombre occasion.

If decorations becoming a willing serf symbol I'll have to become a crazy lights lazy.

I like the nut ones 😂 Clearly the sombre tins will have to be tailored to whatever flavours customarily lie uneaten in your house come 6th January.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 15/09/2022 17:51

In answer to the original question - only if they want to.

girlfriend44 · 15/09/2022 17:51

Time ppl saw thru Christmas anyway and realised how over commercialised it is and nobody needs to buy lots of presents just because we've been brainwashed onto believing a baby called Jesus was born on the 25th December.

DontSpeakLatinInFrontOfTheBooks · 15/09/2022 17:57

There’ll be “pared back” Christmas celebrations this year alright, but that will be because of the rising cost of living for many. I have no idea what our Christmas will look like yet but I’m going to give my family the best I can manage to, like always. I did the same when I’ve had deaths in my own family that year too.

Maybe we could all get together and swap roses sweets so we all end up with the ones that personally disappoint us.

I'm also the weirdo.who likes the coconut ones.

That's promising - I hate the coconuts, even more than the toffee pennies. Yes, the Official Quality Street Mourning Exchange could work very well.

Carpy88999 · 15/09/2022 19:17

Some people are addicted to this fake grief

Westernesse · 15/09/2022 19:18

Deranged.

lemonyanus · 15/09/2022 19:21

Christmas should be pared back anyway because it's fucking ridiculous. Sorry kids, the elf won't be arriving in a balloon along with a North Pole breakfast this year because the Queen has died Sad

3rdOfHisNameBreakerOfPens · 15/09/2022 19:22

We could call them Quality Griefs.

Feart · 15/09/2022 19:24

YABU to think that the queen was remotely interest in the rest of us plebs!

Antarcticant · 15/09/2022 19:24

3rdOfHisNameBreakerOfPens · 15/09/2022 19:22

Yes! Quality Griefs and Mo-roses!

maddiemookins16mum · 15/09/2022 19:49

My mum died 4 months before Christmas, we made it one of the best we ever had. Pretty sure Liz wouldn’t want us moping around eating bread and scrape cos she’d died 4 months earlier.

Antarcticant · 15/09/2022 19:24

Yes! Quality Griefs and Mo-roses!

😂This is actually a strangely appealing business plan.

Although I have an alternative suggestion. I eat all the coconuts, toffees and creams leaving the tin full of the less appealing ones. It'll obviously be less economical and I'll get fat but I'm willing to take one for the team.

Greenpolkadot · 15/09/2022 20:19

What Skinner says.
A lot of people won't be able to afford a flash Christmas.
We'll all be paying the fecking fuel bills

5128gap · 15/09/2022 20:27

No one will do anything of the sort.
By Christmas I'm willing to bet the majority of people making a three act tragedy out of her death will all but have forgotten about the Queen, and the same people posting poems will be posting pictures of their children's mountain of presents instead.
People are 'grieving' all over SM because there's not a lot else on in September. They'll have more fun things to focus on come Christmas.

Howdoidothisanymore · 15/09/2022 22:03

No.
My daughters Dad had a heart attack and died on Christmas Day when she was 10. She was alone with him and tried to save him with CPR.
We have managed over the years to save Christmas. Damned if I'm changing that for anyone.

megosaurusrex · 15/09/2022 22:13

FFS as if this year hasn't been miserable enough already.

Ambertonix · 15/09/2022 22:34

I saw a reply to someone on twitter who was lamenting the fact that this christmas will be different. They said, "Yep, this christmas will be different because we will be cooking a squirrel over a candle whilst wearing five jumpers." I thought this was both funny and scarily prophetic for some.

IhMrsPr · 15/09/2022 22:41

Can I have everybody's coconut chocolates please? I'll give you my hazelnut ones.

StoneofDestiny · 15/09/2022 22:56

What an utterly ridiculous idea!
This country has wasted £Billions on an excessive funeral preparations already! It's intruded into most peoples normal lives enough - no way is it overshadowing Christmas celebrations! Though if we are spared the 'kings speech' that will be ok

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 15/09/2022 23:01

We'll spend Christmas like we always do.
