Decorating for halloween

Do you decorate your house for Halloween? If so, how much effort do you put in? I've got primary school aged children and normally just pop a few plastic halloween decorations around x

I used to do lots when the children were small. A particular favourite was spreading the web all around the outside of the house

mondaytosunday · 14/09/2022 12:46

we put carved pumpkins out, put cobwebs on the bushes, decorate the front door. When my kids were young and their friends were coming in for a bit (as I grew up in America everyone assumed I did Halloween well) I'd decorate the hall inside too.
One memorable year it coincided with the Bake Off final and the girls were addicted so after going round came back for pizza and the show - I decorated internally quite a bit that year.
Where we live now it's really popular - like that scene in ET. So tons of sweets, carved pumpkins, a decoration for the door etc.
devs go up in the morning and come down the next day. The jack o lanterns from a few days before and after.

girlmom21 · 14/09/2022 12:46

3yo DD has asked to so I might just get some bunting and pumpkins. Nothing major.

sanityisamyth · 14/09/2022 12:51

I don't. I try to avoid it altogether. I don't see the point in it. DS(8) carves a pumpkin and that's about it.

We go a bit mad. Our street is one of those that trims up for everything. We always have a theme, this year it's crime scene

Coasterfan · 14/09/2022 12:53

We love it so we have lots of decorations and do loads of activities, then it’s DC1 birthday and then we start Christmas, I love this time of year!

LuciferRising · 14/09/2022 12:54

I follow the seasons. I find it very grounding. Its a constant. So I decorate for Autumn and will add in some carved pumpkins, and outside decoration such as a skeleton etc for Halloween. It is my favourite festival and I like the history and myth behind it.

bellsbuss · 14/09/2022 12:56

Yes I decorate for the Halloween , more goes up each year as I buy stuff in the sale

MassiveSalad22 · 14/09/2022 12:56

No, DS1 is a scaredy-cat cat, DS2 would love it, I am anti social and CBA with trick or treaters. We might carve a pumpkin or something this year but can’t be bothered cooking a pumpkin dish the kids won’t eat. We had some great Halloween parties when I was a kid but we haven’t seemed to reach that stage yet! Eldest is 7 😵‍💫

Brokendaughter · 14/09/2022 12:59

I decorate for Autumn, so maple leaf garlands, wreaths, autumn coloured rugs/cushion covers, pumpkin stuff without faces on etc... then add a few Halloween bits which get removed again after Halloween, leaving the Autumn bits up until they get changed over for Christmas decorations in December.
All the furry blankets etc.. come out over that time too.

They are warm colours so brighten the house up as the season gets darker & rainier.

Ponoka7 · 14/09/2022 13:02

Me and my DD (24) do, no children here but the children that do call say how great the house looks. I get decent stuff to hand out as well. I've got my eye on a massive inflatable from the range. I'm going to do a graveyard on my small lawn. I add to what I've got every year and store it well, so I can reuse it.

YouBelongHere · 14/09/2022 13:05

I decorate the inside, don't go as overboard as I do for Christmas but I think it's nice to have some stuff up to mark the occassion. Can't really decorate the outside 'cos I'm in a flat - quite like trick or treaters but obviously won't get any this year!

FourTeaFallOut · 14/09/2022 13:07

I do like decorating the place and marking the day. I like it. We don't have a huge display - just the same few bits we put out each year and we have some over-achievers around us so we don't stand out.

FourTeaFallOut · 14/09/2022 13:08

I'd say we have as much indoors stuff as outside.

FuzzyPuffling · 14/09/2022 13:10

No, nothing, never have. I am a Hallowe'en Hater.

RelativePitch · 14/09/2022 13:17

We put cobweb everywhere in the house, we have those black and white photos of Victorian families that hologram into hideous ghouls going up the staircase, I have creepy dolls, creepy rocking horses, and rooks in birdcages scattered round the house, full sized crackling clowns hanging from the bannisters, full sized skeleton hanging on the front door, light up skulls, LED tea lights everywhere and front garden done as a grave yard with a moaning zombie crawling across the lawn. Oh and carved pumpkins. I add one or two decorations a year and reuse what I have accumulated over the years. I have two boys, the more gruesome the better!

FiddleFigs · 14/09/2022 13:18

Yes - just the front mostly around the front door area. After her birthday and Xmas, it's DD's favourite day of the year, so I mostly do it for her - and the neighbourhood kids always get a kick out of it. I don't do anything inside though.

Stompythedinosaur · 14/09/2022 13:26

We decorate, normally the week before. Nothing major, a few decs around the house (reused each year), carve a pumpkin each.

We have ended up with quite a few outdoor decorations (from an outdoor spooky walk we hosted during lock down) so I often put them out, probably more than the average house, but nothing that takes ages to do, it is just a case of plonking things out.

tuttifruit · 14/09/2022 13:27

We never do but always wish we did! If you have the time/money then go for it, I think it's nice to mark the seasons

TheKeatingFive · 14/09/2022 13:30

Yup, we've a bag of decorations tat in the attic which we put out every year. Most anticipated is the spooky doorbell that almost dislocates your finger when you press it 😆

Im in ROI though, much bigger deal over here.

ThorsBedazzler · 14/09/2022 13:37

I've got enough to decorate the lounge and all the front windows. I would love to have decorations outside but no space.

Vates · 14/09/2022 13:42

I like Halloween more than Christmas, especially the decorations! I live in a flat so no trick or treaters. I am going to put mine up soon.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 14/09/2022 13:43

We have as many boxes of Halloween decorations as we do Christmas ones. I love it.

elizaregina · 14/09/2022 13:44

Gentle, primative Halloween decs , yes.eg cats, broom's...witches... pumpkin's. We have green and orange lights.. love it

bert3400 · 14/09/2022 13:48

We used to go all out, we where famous for our Halloween extravaganza. For some reason DH got fully on board and planned for months ahead . The last one we did involved a projector, smoke machine, talking pumpkins ( using the projector) and dancing ghosts in the upstairs window. We also had philips Hue lights that flashed and sound effects of creeky doors when anyone rung the bell (Ring do an app I believe) . We loved doing it. We moved abroad and not really able to dress the house up and it's not a done thing here. Happy days
