Cyclists "strongly advised" not to go on bike ride next Monday

Ok they've now U-turned on their advice (not the first organisation to do so after the inevitable backlash) but why on earth would British Cycling think this was a good idea?

"British Cycling strongly recommends that anybody out riding their bike on the day of the state funeral does so outside of the timings of the funeral service and associated processions, which will be confirmed later this week"

You’ve got to love all this competitive ‘respect paying’. These institutions are really making a competitive sport of it. Hard to call a winner at the moment. Complete madness.

I was looking at some corporate toadying yesterday and asking myself why? Why? And the answer, in that case, was staring me in the face. The honours system: a gong in the bag, better get bowing and scraping. Appalling.

Christ almighty, it's bad enough that the BBC has turned into MournHub and MN is full of screaming vampires. Now we can't even go for a bike ride? Bollocks.

MournHub .... Brilliant, I'm stealing that one!!!

crummyusername · 14/09/2022 13:49

Highly recommend the GrieveWatch Twitter feed for more examples of this utter madness

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 14/09/2022 13:49

It’s starting to feel a bit lockdown-esque isn’t it?

Twiglets1 · 14/09/2022 13:49

What next? Cadburys advising people not to eat chocolate on Monday out of respect for the Queen?

RiftGibbon · 14/09/2022 13:50

isthismylifenow · 14/09/2022 12:40

As someone looking in from another country, this is all getting a bit nonsensical now. I read about the Centre Parcs debacle with a dropped jaw, and now this.

It seems as though you are being forced to mourn and grieve?

If you feel you wish to pay your respects and have a sombre day, it is very understandable, but what if you do not feel so strongly about the Queens passing?

I am finding things I am seeing here a bit bizarre in all honesty.

I'm stuck here with this lunacy taking place all around.
How is it in any way respectful, let alone appropriate to dictate to people what they can and cannot do?

PuzzyGalore · 14/09/2022 13:50

I don't care what anyone else is doing. I have a nice bottle of wine I've been looking for an excuse to drink. I shall open it and start working my way through it on Monday during the funeral. The Queen liked a drink we are told so am sure she would approve. I will go for a walk afterwards then finish any wine I have left. I'm quite looking forward to it.

GetOffTheRoof · 14/09/2022 13:51

I think organisations are being bloody idiots about this however don't forget that the police and ambulances ha e been stripped back around the country to be lent to London areas to deal with the enormous influx of people.

It's a fact that 10,000 extra coppers are on duty each day in London right now. There's only 120,000 of them in the country. That a lot of people being taken off other duties to make up the numbers.

Going off in unnecessary MAMIL related trips with a risk of significant injury / a crash etc is foolish when the emergency services are already overstretched and response times are appalling, let alone when there are even fewer of them available than usual on predictable days.

Just a point.

Superbabe64 · 14/09/2022 13:53

I am a member of British Cycling and had not seen that.
And I'm for one will be taking advantage of the quiet Surrey roads and will give Windsor and London a miss.

Flatmountains · 14/09/2022 13:53

I reckon the streets will be teeming with everyone who is fed up with this control malarkey. I think a lot of shops sre closing because everyoe else is and they think there will be no shoppers🪲

AppleIsMyName · 14/09/2022 13:54

I would like to fast forward to October 14th. By then all this palavar will be forgotten and maybe we can focus on real issues in our economy.

EarringsandLipstick · 14/09/2022 13:56

I don't think most businesses are sure what they should do 'as a mark of respect'

Exactly. They are all terrified of doing something wrong & being 'cancelled'. There's a terror of not being seen as suitably grieving for the monarch & so now everyone is out performing everyone else.

It's insane & I'm also on the outside, watching in growing disbelief. Everything I've seen about the late Queen is that she was a fan of 'keep on keeping on' & would deplore this pointless performative behaviour.

Just looked at the vacancy list for Emergency Ambulance shifts in my region on Monday (trying to decide whether to pick up overtime or not), and it looks much like any normal Sunday (rather than a normal weekday). Shit, but averagely so. But that's never stopped, and hopefully won't ever stop, anyone enjoying their hobbies, sports and DIY.

A lot of the company not taken out of context to stir trouble have stated this very sensible reason.
plus less staff generally to keep a business open given childcare etc

Franklyfrost · 14/09/2022 13:58

The Queen did hate bikes.

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/09/2022 14:00

It’s just wiffle though. No one is going to take notice

Reallyreallyborednow · 14/09/2022 14:00

How am I supposed to get to work?

not all cyclists are lycra clad mamils, some of us rely on bikes as our main mode of transport.

can you imagine me telling work I’ll be three hours late for my shift as British cycling have said not to cycle until all the funeral malarkey is over?

they really don’t think do they.

QuebecBagnet · 14/09/2022 14:03

But all those people at Centre Parcs with the closed facilities will have nothing to do apart from cycle laps of the establishment! 😁

i’m considering going mountain biking for the day!

MadeWithCare · 14/09/2022 14:04

I have to admit, I've been pondering what's an appropriate use of the gained bank holiday. I'm neither pro nor anti royal. I'd be respectful at any funeral related occasion I found myself at, e.g. a minutes silence at football, but I don't plan to go out of my way to be involved or to watch it.

But is it OK to do normal bank holiday things on the BH?. To have fun? To mow the lawn? I even wondered if it's OK to change the beds and put the washing out! I was thinking of suggesting a run to a few people, but currently considering if that's appropriate?

AlbertaAnnie · 14/09/2022 14:10

I wasn’t planning a cycle on Monday but might have to fit one in now! 😝

I think that is absolutely fine. I may do some gardening. My Dad died on Sunday so I’m probably not going to watch the funeral - I’m finding it hard to get into the spirit of all the sham mourning.

I’m sure the Queen was great but she was no more real to me than a character from Harry Potter.

Urgh the fucking performative genuflecting mass griefwank MUST END!

Hear, hear.

Fififelix · 14/09/2022 14:14

Oh fuck off. I feel sorry for her family but I didn't personally know her she was elderly lived to the good age of 96!! It's hysterical nonsense.

YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO WORK YOU're SUPPOSED TO GRIEVE GODDAMMIT!

christmaspudding43 · 14/09/2022 14:18

If it's not important enough to give me the day off don't tell me I can't go for a bloody bike ride afterwards!

Disclaimer: I'm perfectly happy to work actually but honestly.
